Koa Misi sentenced to probation in 2011 battery case

Miami Dolphins linebacker Koa Misi has been sentenced from his no-contest plea stemming from a 2011 incident in California. Misi has been given three years probation, with 400 hours of community service and 12 anger management classes required, following Misi punching through the front door of an apartment, then punching a man in the face. Misi also paid for the medical bills and the door for the man.

The judge downgraded the charges from a felony to a misdemeanor due to Misi's lack of any other criminal history, and the fact that Misi had already made the restitution payments, totaling $42,000. The lack of history and the downgraded charges could help Misi avoid any punishment from the NFL, who is said to already be reviewing the situation.

In April 2011, according to authorities, Misi and some friends were leaving a bar and walking down the street. A man yelled something at the group from the apartment balcony, which led to Misi reacting. Misi then went up to the door and punched through it, ultimately punching another man in the face, breaking his orbital bone.

Authorities arrested Misi in March last year in Florida, after a warrant was issued in California. He was released on a $10,000 bond at the time. He then appeared in court in California over the Dolphins' bye week in October, where he entered the no-contest plea. After his sentencing this past Wednesday, Misi will be required to appear in court again in June, where he will demonstrate for the judge his compliance with his sentencing.

The NFL has not said when it would make a decision on any "player conduct policy" penalty Misi could be facing.
