The Miami Dolphins lost wide receiver Marvin McNutt to the Carolina Panthers today. McNutt, who had been on the Miami practice squad, was signed by the Panthers, where he will be on the 53-man active roster for at least the next three games.
McNutt joined Miami this offseason when he was waived by the Philadelphia Eagles, who drafted him in the sixth round of the 2012 Draft. He appeared in four games for the Eagles, but did not record a reception. He spent most of the season on Philadelphia's practice squad.
He clearly was impressive enough this preseason for Miami to earn a place on the practice squad, and was on the bubble as someone who could, potentially, make the 53 man roster. Instead, the Dolphins only kept four wide receivers, Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline, Brandon Gibson, and Rishard Matthews, while putting McNutt and Brian Tyms on the practice squad.
To fill the practice squad position, the Dolphins have signed former New York Jets wide receiver Ryan Spadola. Spadola had been on the Jets active roster, but was waived On October 5. The Jets were said to have tried to re-sign Spadola, who had stared in the preseason for New York, but he chose to sign with Miami instead.
Spadola is the second new addition to the Miami practice squad this week, joining safety DJ Campbell, who filled the slot vacated by safety Jordan Kovacs, who was promoted to the active roster before last week's contest against the Baltimore Ravens.
