Dolphins Rookie Report Card: Week 5

Each week, we'll grade the performance of each 2013 Miami Dolphins draft pick and comment on their development. Here's the latest round of grades following Miami's 26-23 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

DE Dion Jordan (1st Round Pick, 3rd overall). Grade: B

Jordan turned in another impressive effort in limited action, helping increase the calls for the first-round draft pick to have his role expanded. His biggest play was raking Joe Flacco's arm, sending an errant pass into the arms of Reshad Jones who then scored.

Jordan nearly intercepted a pass of his own on a screen two plays prior, and recorded two total quarterback pressures and a tackle in just 21 defensive snaps.

Season GPA: 2.48

CB Jamar Taylor (2nd Round Pick, 54th overall). Grade: D+

Taylor got caught guessing and gave up a 40-yard catch to Tandon Doss in his only coverage target. The play was the biggest chunk of yardage gained on a third-quarter drive that ended in a go-ahead Ravens field goal.

The rookie played just 15 snaps against Baltimore, mostly in relief of an injured Nolan Carroll. He's had a tough start to his injury-shortened first season, with passers holding a perfect 158.3 rating when throwing into his coverage. His development on the season will be worth keeping a close eye on.

Season GPA: 1.15

OL Dallas Thomas (3rd Round Pick, 77th overall). Grade: I (Incomplete)

It's not surprising that after a disastrous preseason, Thomas still can't get a look despite Miami's desperate need for line help. Expect the third-rounder to spend most, if not all of his rookie year on the inactive list.

Season GPA: N/A

CB Will Davis (3rd Round Pick, 93rd overall). Grade: I (Incomplete)

Davis' debut remains delayed by injury.

Season GPA: N/A

LB Jelani Jenkins (4th Round Pick, 104th overall). Grade: C-

Jenkins saw his most action to date on Sunday, recording 18 defensive snaps as the Dolphins' starting linebackers suffered injuries and fatigue. Aside from a tackle on special teams, Jenkins made no discernible impact.

He did draw a questionable flag for defensive holding in the third quarter, but the penalty was declined.

Season GPA: 1.66

Dion Sims (4th Round Pick, 106th overall). Grade: C

Sims served in his usual role as back up tight end/blocking specialist, but played just 11 snaps. At this point, it's clear that Sims will be a seldom used piece in the Dolphins' passing offense.

A possible use for Sims skillset may be as an inline blocker to help with pass protection. Sure, it removes a receiver running a route to catch a pass, but it'll help ensure that the quarterback has a chance to make that pass.

Season GPA: 2.07

RB Mike Gillislee (5th Round Pick, 164th overall). Grade: I (Incomplete)

Some are feigning for Gillislee to get an opportunity to play in place of the perpetually putrid Daniel Thomas, but don't expect that to happen any time soon. He was in street clothes again on Sunday.

Season GPA: N/A

K Caleb Sturgis (5th Round Pick, 166th overall). Grade: C+

Miami's rookie kicking phenom missed his first kick of the season, a last-minute 57-yarder that shouldn't have been that long. It's tough to blame Sturgis for missing that one, and he went 3-of-3 the rest of the afternoon.

More concerning is the one touchback on six kickoffs, with the Ravens getting an average starting field position of the 27-yard line. Worse yet was the kickoff out of bounds, giving Baltimore the ball a 40-yard line.

Sturgis is currently 23rd in the NFL in touchbacks and 31st in percentage of kickoffs returned.

Season GPA: 3.66

DB Don Jones (7th Round Pick, 250th overall). Grade: D-

Jones had a terrible game on Sunday. The Dolphins seemingly made an effort to directionally punt towards Jones' side of the coverage, and he failed on each occasion to make a stop. Ravens' punt returner Tandon Doss averaged 12.5 yards on four returns, with Jones having an opportunity to make the quick tackle on each.

He also played poorly on kickoff coverage, getting flushed out of the returner's lane on two occasions.

Jones' special teams star has fallen of late.

Season GPA: 2.14
