The Miami Dolphins lost to the New Orleans Saints last night in a game that started ugly and never got better. After the game, the team began to churn the bottom of the roster, according to a report from the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson, among others. The team has waived safety Kelcie McCray and fullback Tyler Clutts.
McCray signed with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2012, but broke his foot in training camp. He spent the year on injured reserve before getting back onto the field this offseason. He was expected to become a solid depth player at safety while contributing on special teams, but that never materialized and, with the emergence of rookie safety Don Jones on special teams, McCray became expendable.
Clutts, meanwhile, was claimed off waivers from the Houston Texans last month. The Dolphins had released traditional fullback Jorvorskie Lane during the preseason, then let h-back Evan Rodriguez go as well, before claim Clutts. The team has used Charles Clay in the fullback role more than Clutts so far this year, and simply did not seem to need to carry the pure fullback.
The Dolphins now have two open roster spots, but no news on who will fill those positions has been announced.
