2013 NFL Mock Draft: Phinsider Community Picks 49-56

The Phinsider Community Mock Draft continues today with the second round, picks 49-56. Each of these picks is made by one of the readers here on the site, with their explanation of why they made that selection.

Peter G. Aiken-US PRESSWIRE

The Phinsider Community mock draft returns today with our next set of eight picks. Today, we continue into the heart of the second round, with picks 49-56.

49. New York Giants

Kevin Minter

LB

6'0"

246

LSU

GM: Celticwar17

This guy has solid pass defence coupled with decent size for his position. In my opinion, this is very good value for this player. This is somewhat of a need for the Giants, so it is a nice-safe pick. Minter is probably one of the more pro-ready LB's in the draft because of his consistency, but he does not have as much upside.

50. Chicago Bears

Menelik Watson

OT

6'5"

310

Florida State

GM: Dolfankenny

I really hate drafting offensive lineman, but if you watched Chicago over the last 2 years they can't block anyone. While very tempted to go with best DB left, you have to get their offensive line fixed. I also seriously thought about Anthony Lacy and Escobar here, but they have to go OL here. If Long is gone (as he was) and Watson is off the board in real draft, I see them going Johnthon Banks or David Ammerson (NC St).

51. Washington Redskins

Jordan Poyer

CB

6'0"

191

Oregon State

The biggest needs the Redskins have this offseason is in their secondary. They need cornerback and safety upgrades. With this being their first pick of the draft after the trade last year for Robert Griffin III, they don't really have a choice but to attack the draft as a needs based process. Look for them to go heavy on the secondary, starting here with Poyer.

52. Minnesota Vikings

Arthur Brown

LB

6'0"

241

Kansas State

GM: NetSwag12

The Vikings have a bit of a need at linebacker and Arthur Brown in the late second would be great value to the team. A few months ago mid to late second round seemed right for Brown, but he has been shooting up draft boards of late and could be gone in the top 20. If he were to fall this far, I doubt the Vikings wouldn't scoop him up, if not even trade up a few spots for him.

53. Cincinnati Bengals

David Amerson

CB

6'1"

205

NC State

GM: ct1361

The Bengals need some help in the secondary and Amerson fits that bill. He is a former All-American in ‘11 that had a rough year last year. He has ball skills, having had 13 INT's in ‘11 as a sophomore, and good size. He is a good football player going to a good defense with a good DC in Zimmer. At this point in the 2nd round, Amerson is a steal.

54. Miami Dolphins
(from Indianapolis Colts)

D.J. Swearinger

S

5'10"

208

South Carolina

GM: bacattack51

Hardest hitting safety in the draft, would form a very formidable safety tandem with Reshad Jones, as well as present a long-term option opposed to Clemons. Would be a good addition to our run defense when taking into consideration our LB corps may be slightly weaker in run defense compared to last year. My ideal situation would be if Cyprien fell to pick 42 and we could snag him (dreaming big), but Swearinger is my 2nd favorite safety and pick 54 is good value here. I think this is the best value at 54 with the way this board has played out. Options I would really like here like Kyle Long, DJ Hayden, Jamar Taylor, and Damontre Moore are all gone, and I'm not reaching on a TE at this spot.

55. Green Bay Packers

Eddie Lacy

RB

5'11"

231

Alabama

GM: hollywood_89

The Packers need a RB and Lacy is the BPA as well so if fills a need and its not a reach this late in the second round of the draft. If Lacy performs could be the missing element for an already great offense.

56. Seattle Seahawks

Kwann Short

DT

6'3"

299

Purdue

GM: Rytackle

Let's face it, the Seahawks have done a fantastic job creating a team with very few glaring holes. This could very well end up a BPA situation for Coach Carroll, however I think they go with the Defensive Tackle position. They addressed it a bit in free agency by signing Avril and Bennett, but grabbing Kawann Short this late in the second could be an absolute steal. The kid is capable of taking games over and there was arguably no defensive lineman better in the Big Ten. The Seahawks could use an inside penetrator defensive lineman to truly make their front four (or three in their hybrid D) a force to be reckoned with. Short fits the bill; 6-3, 300lbs he is most comparable with the Dolphins own Randy Starks in the way he's able to provide a steady pass rush from the inside. Other options for the Seahawks include more of a run stuffer such as Brandon Williams, or another linebacker to complement Bobby Wagner, such as Khaseem Greene.
