Currently, the NFL is in the smoke screen and misdirection season. During this time, every news story, rumor, and perceived "sure thing" needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Nothing is true, and everything changes. In that respect, nearly every mock draft being published has the Miami Dolphins selecting Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill with the eighth overall pick in this month's NFL Draft. But, the Dolphins may not subscribe to that answer to their quarterback dilemma.
As teams look to solidify their draft boards, the Dolphins have scheduled a facility visit and workout with wide receiver Michael Floyd next week. Floyd, who is quickly climbing into a possible top ten draft choice, has already worked out for the Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers, and Philadelphia Eagles. He also has workouts with the Arizona Cardinals, Tennessee Titans, St. Louis Rams, Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, and Minnesota Vikings.
"Michael Floyd, to me, had an excellent workout," Mike Mayock from NFL Network said, following Floyd's Pro Day at Notre Dame. "What you get with Michael Floyd, you get a 6-foot-3, 220-pound wide receiver who gets tremendous breaks in and out. His explosion off the line of scrimmage is exceptional - I would compare it to Blackmon.
"I think the interest should start at No. 7 with Jacksonville, Miami at 8, Carolina at 9, Buffalo at 10. Seven through ten there has to be some interest, but in no event can I see him going past the Jets at 16."
In fact, NFL.com's Gil Brandt feels Floyd could jump over presumed top receiver Justin Blackmon as the first wide out selected, heading to the St. Louis Rams at the sixth position. "Personally, I would rank Floyd higher," Brandt wrote. "Floyd is a little faster and a little taller, and he's been pretty productive in college."
Floyd is the Notre Dame all-time record holder in receiving yards (3,686), receiving touchdowns (37), and catches (271). He started all four years at Notre Dame. At the NFL Scouting Combine, Floyd measured 6' 2-5/8", 220 lbs. He ran a 4.47 second 40-yard dash, with a 36-1/2" vertical. He has an arm length of 32-7/8" and a hand size of 9-3/8".
"My dream is to be an NFL superstar -- to make it into the NFL," Floyd, who will be attending the NFL Draft, said. "I don't think the whole excitement has hit me yet. Once I'm there in New York and I hear my name called out, I'll be jumping up and down because the dream came true."
