Report: Peyton Manning Worked Out for San Francisco 49ers

New, comments

As the Miami Dolphins shift their attention to free agent quarterback Matt Flynn, a new suitor for Peyton Manning has emerged. Despite working to re-sign quarterback Alex Smith, the San Francisco 49ers worked out Manning earlier this week. According to an ESPN report, Manning threw passes for 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh at Duke University on Tuesday night.

Manning working out for the 49ers throws a curve into what was seemingly a two team race. Yesterday, Manning called the Dolphins to inform them that he would not be signing with them, while today the Arizona Cardinals took themselves out of the race by paying Kevin Kolb his $7 million roster bonus. Before the realization that the 49ers were in the race, Manning was thought to only be considering the Denver Broncos and Tennessee Titans.

Manning worked out for the Broncos today, again at Duke University, with team president John Elway tweeting:

We enjoyed visiting with Peyton today in N.C. He threw the ball great and looked very comfortable out there.

Watching him throw today was the next step in this important process for our team and Peyton. It was a productive visit and went well.

Manning is expected to workout for the Titans in the next few days.

Miami, meanwhile, has scheduled a meeting with Flynn for this weekend. Flynn is meeting with the Seattle Seahawks today and tomorrow, before he is believed to be heading to Miami. Seattle could make an effort to sign him before the Miami meeting, however that's thought to be unlikely, given Flynn's relation ship with former Green Bay offensive coordinator, and current Miami head coach, Joe Philbin.
