The 2nd best Miami Dolphins draft pick of all time is...
, who was a 1996 5th round pick, 154th overall.
If you're like me, you probably don't have the fondest of memories of Jimmy Johnson's time as Miami Dolphins head coach. But there's no denying the fact that he hit home runs on a couple of his draft decisions. None were bigger than Miami Dolphins legend Zach Thomas.
Thomas as an ultra-productive linebacker at Texas Tech but fell to the fifth round because of concerns about his size, being generously listed at 5'11 - quite tiny for an inside linebacker. Thomas, though, is proof that you have to sometimes look beyond a man's size when judging him. His heart was immeasurable - which is what Dolphin fans will remember about him most.
Zach was a tackle machine, racking up over 1,700 tackles in his illustrious career. In Dolphins history, a player has recorded over 165 tackles in a season just eleven times. Zach accounted for eight of those seasons.
All told, Thomas was a seven time Pro Bowler and five time first-team All-Pro. And very soon, we're going to be hearing the Zach Thomas Hall of Fame debate take center stage as his eligibility nears.
To me, though, it isn't even a question. Zach Thomas defines what a Hall of Famer should be.
