Miami Dolphins Top 10 Best Draft Picks: #5 Mark Clayton

The 5th best Miami Dolphins draft pick of all time is...

Mark Clayton, who was a 1983 8th round pick, 223rd overall.

Coming out of Louisville, many considered Clayton too small to succeed in the NFL - measuring in at just 5'9. When Don Shula was asked years later why he decided to draft him, Shula replied, "He was there."

Little did anyone, including Shula, know what the Dolphins were getting when they selected Clayton. One year later, Clayton burst onto the scene, catching 73 passes for 1,389 yards and leading the league with 18 touchdown receptions - an NFL record at the time and still the third most ever.

By the time his career was over, one that included five Pro Bowls, Clayton had set numerous team records. Those records include career receptions (550), consecutive games with a reception (92), receiving yards in a season (1,398), and career receiving touchdowns (81).
