The 6th best Miami Dolphins draft pick of all time is...
Vern Den Herder, who was a 1971 9th round pick, 230th overall.
Anytime you get a player in the 9th round of the draft and he plays 12 seasons for your franchise, you did good. When you draft a player who tallies 64 career sacks - including posting double-digit sack seasons three times in four years - you absolutely hit the jackpot.
Coming out of Central Iowa, Den Herder only had one sack his rookie season. But he then started every game for the next five seasons, accumulating 41.5 sacks as part of two Super Bowl champion teams. Vern is also shares the team record for sacks in a game, tallying five in a 1973 game against the Buffalo Bills.
This makes you wonder how teams could have selected 229 players before Den Herder came off the board.
