The #5 Miami Dolphins Draft Bust of All Time is...
Sammie Smith, who was a 1989 1st round pick, 9th overall.
It was no secret that the Dolphins desperately needed a running back, which became a revolving door position since Dan Marino took over. But when you reach for a player early in the draft, odds are he's going to end up on a list like this.
Smith spent three mediocre seasons in Miami, averaging under 600 yards rushing per season and just 3.5 yards per carry. Of course, Smith will be forever known for his two critical fumbles in back to back weeks against the Chiefs and Oilers. If there was one thing Smith was good at, it was fumbling at the worst possible times. Don Shula should have gotten the man some stickum.
Some of the players the Dolphins could have selected with that wasted draft pick include Steve Atwater, Andre Rison, and Eric Metcalf.
