Week 5 Phinsider NFL Power Rankings

Yep, they're still atop the power rankings.
Yep, they're still atop the power rankings.

Another week of NFL action is in the books, and it's time for the Phinsider's weekly power rankings.  This week, the middle of the rankings saw some disagreement, with teams like Cincinnati being ranked as high as 16, and as low as 23.

Also, we had several ties this week, which I broke by ranking the teams in the order they were ranked last week (i.e., Miami ahead of St. Louis ahead of Indianapolis).

Oh, and the top of the rankings are getting boring, as the same five teams are still there, just ranked in a different order, with the Packers on top still.

The largest jump on the charts this week was the San Francisco 49ers, up 12 spots from 20, breaking into the top 10 at 8.

The biggest tumble was a tie between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Arizona Cardinals, both of them falling 5 positions.

Last week we introduced a new piece to the power rankings, a guest ranker.  Unfortunately, I was unable to get an email to this week's guest writer until late last night, and things didn't work out.  But, we will try again this week.  Just leave a comment below, and I will randomly choose someone to fill out a rank order of all 32 teams.

Remarks

1

1

Green Bay Packers

1

1

1

1

Pack offense looks even better than it did during Green Bay's Super Bowl run last winter. The greatest show on tundra. (kmb8488)

2

3

New England Patriots

1

2

3

3

The Pats once again have dominating offense that has them at the top of the division and near the top of the league as usual.  (texascowpunk)

3

5

Detroit Lions

3

3

4

2

Defense lived up to the hype against Chicago last Monday, but Jahvid Best was the story of the game. Stafford and Co. will have their work cut out for them against San Francisco's suddenly stingy defense. (kmb8488)

4

2

New Orleans Saints

5

5

2

4

A very good team, but could be losing ground in the race for the NFC with Green Bay and Detroit looking strong. (Mosul_DolFan)

5

4

Baltimore Ravens

4

4

5

5

Joe Flacco has to play better, but the Ravens' defense is as feisty and opportunistic as ever. Super Bowl bound? (kmb8488)

6

8

Buffalo Bills

Still looking good after five weeks. Have a tough task this week vs. the Giants. (texascowpunk)

4-1 Heading into bye. Then schedule gets much tougher (@NYJ, @KC, v GB, v OAK, @CHI). We'll know more about this team in a month. (Matty I)

8

20

San Francisco 49ers

8

10

6

8

Jim Harbaugh the early favorite for Coach of the Year. What he has done w/ Alex Smith so far is simply amazing. (Matty I)

9

9

Oakland Raiders

9

8

10

13

Outstanding emotional win in Houston has me convinced this team is not a pretender. Next 3 games are at home against bad teams, meaning 6-2 a real possibility. (Matty I)

10

6

Houston Texans

10

11

9

11

Lost to an emotionally charged Raiders team.  Did anyone else notice, the Raiders only had 10 men on the field in that final interception?  Al? (Mosul_DolFan)

11

15

Washington Redskins

12

9

11

10

Grossman the starting QB of the division champs? Maybe! (texascowpunk)

12

11

Pittsburgh Steelers

11

12

12

9

Huge victory for the Steelers against a very hot Titans squad. Hard to say who looked better on Sunday: Ben Roethlisberger or Pittsburgh's secondary. (kmb8488)

13

17

Tennessee Titans

14

13

14

12

Steelers finally joined the 2011 season by destroying the Titans.  Can the Titans lick their wounds during the bye week? (Mosul_DolFan)

14

10

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

13

14

13

15

One week they look tough and resilient, the next week they get decimated by San Francisco.  Young team not quite ready to turn the corner yet. (Mosul_DolFan)

15

12

New York Giants

15

15

17

14

Eli you were on such a roll. What happened last week? (texascowpunk)

16

13

Dallas Cowboys

17

19

15

16

Are we going to see "good Romo" or "bad Romo" vs the Pats? Here's hoping for the good version!  (texascowpunk)

17

16

Chicago Bears

16

20

16

18

Jay Cutler looked phenomenal on Monday in Detroit, but the Bears' porous secondary and even more shoddy offensive line will continue to steal victories from Chicago.  (kmb8488)

18

14

New York Jets

18

17

18

19

If the Jets take a loss this week to the 0-4 Phins the Jets fans might start tasing each other.  (texascowpunk)

19

19

Atlanta Falcons

19

18

19

17

For the Jake Long vs. Matt Ryan debaters - neither one looks great right now. (Mosul_DolFan)

20

27

Cincinnati Bengals

23

16

23

20

Andy Dalton is a franchise-caliber quarterback who could have the Bengals back in playoff contention sooner than most people think.  (kmb8488)

21

21

Cleveland Browns

21

21

20

21

Cleveland's defense will likely mature and improve throughout this season. Lack of playmakers on offense is a major concern for the Browns, however. (kmb8488)

22

28

Seattle Seahawks

20

22

26

23

Impressive win on the road against the Giants - who love to shoot themselves in the foot time and time again. (Matty I)

23

18

Philadelphia Eagles

25

23

22

22

The preseason champs on paper have proven to be paper tigers thus far. (texascowpunk)

24

22

Carolina Panthers

22

24

21

25

Still overacheiving, although Cam Newton had a more human day (Mosul_DolFan)

25

26

Minnesota Vikings

24

26

25

27

Thanks for finally showing up, Vikes. Minnesota's defense looked like Purple People Eaters 2.0 against the Cardinals. Christian Ponder continues to wait in the wings, however, and Donovan McNabb knows it. (kmb8488)

26

32

Kansas City Chiefs

26

25

28

24

Love the effort KC has been playing with despite the injuries and struggles. Particularly love that MIA now has 2 game lead on KC for Andrew Luck. (Matty I)

27

23

Denver Broncos

29

29

24

26

Time for Denver to figure out if Tim Tebow is worth investing in or they should draft a quarterback in 1st round this April. (Matty I)

28

25

Jacksonville Jaguars

27

28

27

29

At least Blaine Gabbert is better than Luke McCown, right? (Mosul_DolFan)

29

24

Arizona Cardinals

28

27

29

28

Completely surprised by this team's struggles offensively. Perhaps Kevin Kolb isn't the answer after all. And I'm not surprised at all. (Matty I)

30

29

Miami Dolphins

31

31

31

31

A team that seems to lack any direction thus far.  (texascowpunk)

31

30

St. Louis Rams

30

30

32

32

Rumor has it the Rams lost to the bye week. (Matty I)

I still think the football gods give the Colts a gift with the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. (Mosul_DolFan)
