Dolphins Depth Chart Bubble Watch

One of the more popular features here during training camp last year was my "March Madness" kind of spin on laying out the potential depth chart each week.  I say it was "March Madness-esque" because of how I format it - including a list of who I think are the final five players on the roster and the final five off of the roster.

The idea behind it wasn't so much to nail down the depth chart at each position.  Instead, it was to help put together a possible 53-man roster.  It was more or less based on my opinions - taking into account practice reports, how the team was lining up by unit (first team, second team, etc...), and preseason game action (once the preseason got underway).  And it seemed like it got some good debate going.  So I'm bringing it back each week this year from now until final cuts in September.

My first edition can be found below - with notes included on how I came up with some of my decisions.

1st Team 2nd Team 3rd Team

Please note that this is based on how I see things as we enter camp - not how I think it will turn out.  It's more of a "snapshot" of current events rather than a prediction of future events.  In a nut shell, if there was no camp and the Dolphins had to trim down to 53 players today, this is how I think the roster would look.  Other notes about this:

  • I think the Dolphins will only keep nine offensive linemen.  But right now, with injury concerns, I do have ten listed on the 53-man roster.  I'm sure this will clear up as camp progresses, though.
  • The chart above does assume that the three players recovering from injuries - Donald Thomas, Greg Camarillo, and David Martin - will be ready to go either at the beginning of camp or very early on in camp.
  • I am listing Jason Taylor as a strongside linebacker for two reasons.  One - that is where he worked a lot during the minicamp that was open to the media.  And two - I think Taylor will primarily take Roth's spot on the field in passing situations.
  • I currently have Charlie Anderson listed on the second team. But I expect the coaches to give Cameron Wake every opportunity to move ahead of Anderson.
  • I expect Eric Green to enter camp working with the starters.  But it'll only be a matter of time before one of the rookies move ahead of him.

So that's my pre-camp depth chart "bubble watch."  Feel free to disect it below...
