**OFFICIAL: Jeff Ireland hired as GM**

**UPDATE #2**: With Ireland's hiring now official, we wait on Cam's future. However. though nothing is official, word is beginning to trickle that Cam Cameron may have actually been fired last night. Down in the comments section of this post, "Matt" tells us that ProFootballTalk has this to say in a recent post on their site:

With Ireland in place, our guess is that the Dolphins will now fire coach Cam Cameron. In fact, a tipster who told us that Ireland would be hired today also said that Cameron was actually informed of his termination on Tuesday night.

Since reading this, I remembered reading an article earlier this afternoon (though I can't seem to find it) that said Cameron had not been into the facility at all today up until that point, which I believe was around 1 pm. I've since contacted one person who has informed me that he cannot confirm that Cam has been into work today. Has he already been told he would be fired? It would make sense. But it's all speculation at this point. And we wait...[end update #2]

**UPDATE**: Here's the official statement released by the Miami Dolphins via their website:

The Miami Dolphins today named Jeff Ireland as their new general manager, effective immediately. Ireland joins the Dolphins after a seven-year stint with the Dallas Cowboys, including the past three as the team’s Vice President of College and Pro Scouting. In fact, of the 53 players on the current Cowboys team, which went 13-3 and won the NFC East in 2007, 38 were acquired over the last three years, including 12 of the club’s 22 starters.

"I am excited about joining the Dolphins as their general manager," Ireland said. "I know the great tradition of the team, and in my mind they are one of the flagship franchises in the NFL. They have a great owner in Wayne Huizenga, who I know is committed to making the Dolphins into winners once again. I am looking forward to working with him and everyone else in Miami to achieve that goal."

"I also want to thank Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys organization. I enjoyed my tenure with the team, and I would not be where I am today without the help of so many people there."

[end update]

Various sources are now reporting that the Miami Dolphins have hired Jeff Ireland to be the team's new General Manager.  All 3 papers, the Miami Herald, the Palm Beach Post, and the Sun-Sentinel are reporting this.

It's also being reported that his new job is active immediatey.

The Herald:

The Miami Herald is reporting that Jeff Ireland has been hired as the Dolphins general manager and the Dolphins are confirming our report with a news release.

No press conference has been scheduled yet but Ireland has already finalized the details of his new contract with Miami.

"I am excited about joining the Dolphins as their general manager," Ireland said in a statement. "I know the great tradition of the team, and in my mind [it] is one of the flagship franchises in the NFL."

The Sun-Sentinel:

The Miami Dolphins today named Jeff Ireland as their new general manager, effective immediately, the team announced. Ireland joins the Dolphins after a seven-year stint with the Dallas Cowboys, including the past three as the team's Vice President of College and Pro Scouting.

The Post:

Jeff Ireland has reached an agreement to be the new Dolphins general manager and already is helping to decide who will be the team's head coach, according to a team source and an NFL source.

And with this hiring, we are likely nearing a decision on the fate of Cam Cameron.

I'd look for Cam's future to be known by the end of the week, if not earlier.
