Apparently, not all Bears are opposed to the idea.

"He knows how to win and he's won Super Bowls, you know, and he's been in every situation possible and he'd make our team a lot better," Bears kicker Robbie Gould told ESPN on Wednesday night at the ESPYs.

Grossman = Orton = A Load of Nothing?

So, we all know this is the big question to be answered this training camp.  Who is going to be our starting QB?

I have heard good and not so good arguements for both, but my biggest issue is what if it isn't either of them?

The way we hear it, neither Rex Grossman nor Kyle Orton did anything in the Bears’ minicamps and OTAs to gain any kind of edge in their battle for the starting QB job this coming season.

Here's the thing.  The Bears are practically giving away the position.  They are begging for one of these guys to step up and be the guy.  Maybe they have a preference towards Grossman, but if Orton came in and took over the spot, I think they would have no problem giving him it.  Both of these guys should be doing every thing they can at every chance they get to try to impress, but if this report is true neither is doing that.  So maybe they don't really have it in them.

And if neither of them is the guy, who is?  Is Chris Simms really our backup plan?

Chris Williams About To Sign

While the Bears have made some questionable moves concerning Free Agency and bolstering our offense, they have been trying to make ammends in recent weeks.  They have rid themselves of a potential locker room cancer (Benson), the have found a low risk - high reward replacement (Jones), they have been working hard toward getting everybody the contracts they want and/or deserve and with the exception of first rounder Chris Williams they have gotten all draft picks signed before training camp.

It looks like they are about to take care of that last one though.  The Bears and first round pick Chris Williams are close to signing a deal.  The deal is expected to be a 5-year deal with 9 million in up front money.

His agent, Bill Johnson, is working out the contract language with Bears negotiator Cliff Stein. And it appears the two sides are getting closer.

"We have exchanged dialogue and proposals," Johnson said Thursday. "I respect the Bears' diligence in working toward a timely resolution, particularly with training camp right around the corner."

Devin Hester Is Protecting "This House!"

All-galactic return man Devin Hester has signed on endorse Under Armour sports wear.

He will be featured in a TV add this Sunday during the ESPY's with Seattle Seahawks DE Patrick Kerney and San Francisco 49er LB Patrick Willis.

As for the signing of Hester, a player who dominates NFL highlights packages during the season, Battista said, "He says everything we want to about speed and performance."

Seriously a guy who has take the league by the size of storm that Hester has, how is it he isn't endorsing every footwear, energy drink and power bar out there?

Kevin Jones, Working Hard

A lot has been floating about the internet about whether and when Kevin Jones would be available.  We still don't know, but by reading this it looks like he isn't all that far off.

Jones works out with Ping six days a week in Saline. He does martial arts training Mondays and Wednesdays. He uses hydraulic machines Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. He uses free weights Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. He also runs and swims.

...

Jones, Stokes and Sherrell used the hydraulic machines in Ping’s basement. It looked like a scene out of a “Rocky” movie, as they sweated and grunted with plain lightbulbs overhead, cement and spare pieces of carpet under their feet, and typical basement stuff all around – bags of fertilizer, a dusty wine rack, mementos. Jones pushed his knee hard as music blared from an old stereo.

Afterward, Jones sat on a table and received heat acupunture. Ping puts his hand over a flame in a small box, then puts his hand on Jones' knee. Jones describes the feeling as a hot needle pinpointing his problem area.

Then Jones, Stokes and Sherrell went outside to an adjacent golf course. They did some jogging. They sprinted uphill. They burst up a pair of small hills – tee boxes – in a tougher version of the 40-yard dash.

There are some short videos attached to the post showing his manuerability and another one showing him hitting the hydraulic machine.

Kevin Jones - A Detroit Perspective

Our head blogger over at Pride of Detroit has been kind enough to give us a quick run down of Kevin Jones career in Detroit and a run donw on what we can expect out of him.

Kevin Jones had a career in Detroit that is best described as a roller coaster ride.  He started off with a great rookie season but really hasn't been able to achieve that kind of success since.  The reasons for that vary from being misused by the Lions to struggling with injuries.  I have no doubt that his potential is still very high as he is fairly young, but there are many questions surrounding him since his career has been a mystery in a sense.

What the Bears will get out of Jones is someone that can come in and pick up yards as a workhorse type of running back.  He doesn't have lightning speed and isn't exactly a home run hitter, but he can get the job done.  He may not have out of this world speed, but he is quick in his movements.  That attribute allows him to avoid defenders, and even when he can't pull off a juke or something like that, his power takes over.  Jones is very strong and uses that to his advantage by driving over defenders.  It's not something he does on a consistent basis, but every once in a while he'll make a big hit of his own despite being a running back.

The issue with Jones is without a doubt his health.  If he can stay healthy, then Jones should rush for over 1000 yards in a starting role.  That's the problem, though.  The last two years he has had season-ending injuries involving his leg, which is never good for a running back.  Those two injuries may have just been freak occurrences or they could be a sign of an injury prone player.  For his sake I hope it's the former, but honestly I'd be surprised if Jones was able to make it through a full season should he become a starter.

If Kevin Jones can remain healthy, then I believe he will be the Chicago Bears' starting running back.  Not only is a change of scenery going to be good for him, but he also has a better offensive line now that he is no longer a Lion.  And to top that all off, he'll get two games against his former team, and I guarantee he will be out for revenge.  In fact, back when he invited some local media members to a workout, Jones screamed "Colletto" before doing a sprint.  Colletto is a reference to the Lions new offensive coordinator, Jim Colletto, who Jones obviously believes is the man responsible for him getting released.  Plus, former Lions always seem to play well against their former team. Some call it the "Lions jinx," and God knows if Artose Pinner can do it, so can Kevin Jones.

Kevin Jones Signs With the Bears

Kevinjones_medium
The NFL Network is reporting that Kevin Jones has agreed to terms with the Chicago Bears.

Jones will receive a one-year deal for the league minimum and hope he has an opportunity to show what he can do.

Kevin Jones was a 1st round draft pick of the  Detroit Lions in the 2004 NFL Draft.  He was the 30th selection and is out of Vriginia Tech.

Realistically Jones could find himself as the backup by the time the regular season rolls around.  If the Bears like the idea of keeping Adrian Peterson in his special teams roll and Garrett Wolfe proves he is just a situation back, we will need a full time guy to spell Matt Forte or step in if an injury occurs.

Keep an eye out for a scouting report from our Detroit blogger.

The Sun-times is reporting the deal is for 1-year at $605k.

Here is a look at his career numbers:

Year Tm G GS Att Yds TD Lng Y/A Y/G A/G
2004 DET 15 14 241 1133 5 74 4.7 75.5 16.1
2005 DET 13 13 186 664 5 40 3.6 51.1 14.3
2006 DET 12 12 181 689 6 52 3.8 57.4 15.1
2007 DET 13 10 153 581 8 34 3.8 44.7 11.8

Kevin Jones Visiting Chicago

Although initially not showing any interest in former Detroit Lions runner Kevin Jones, the Bears seem to now have the interest.

Apparently, the Bears are curious enough to take a good look at the ex-Lions running back, a former first-round draft pick who believes he can return to 1,000-yard form after two serious injuries the last two seasons.

NFL sources said Jones was to take a physical and visit Halas Hall on Tuesday, one week before the Bears open training camp.

The big hold up is Jones' knee.  If he passes physical, then I think he can be a useful addition.  We don't know what we have in Matt Forte.  We hope we have our franchise back, but we don't know.  If he can't get the job done, it would be a luxury to have another running back with some time in the league.

Jones has never had a great season, but with injuries and being on an awful Lions team his whole career did not help that.

Not contract has been offered so far.

Maybe the Bears feigned interest early on to see what the market was.  Once only 4 teams showed interest and none of them signed him they figured they could get a deal more to their liking if they decided to pursue that route.

Bears Interested In Chris Simms

This one has been brewing for some time now.  Each time his name comes up for the Bucs releasing him or trading him, the Bears name pops up.  According to the Tampa Tribune the Bears have expressed interest.

We learned last week that Dallas, Chicago and Detroit are interested in Simms. There are plenty more rumors to come, and no matter which team Simms plays for this season, he will be a backup - except in Tampa.

The Bears had to do something.  With us not knowing whether Rex Grossman can even complete a full season the Bears cannot roll this season depending on Kyle Orton and whatever rookie they prefer.  I would have hoped there was a more dependable and  proven QB available, but if Simms is the best name available then so be it.

Bears Odds

Here is a preview of the Bears upcoming season.

The Bear offense wasn't spectacular in their 2006 Super Bowl season but last year it was abysmal - especially the running game. Chicago clearly missed Thomas Jones in the backfield as they only produced 83.3 yards rushing per game without him. Cedric Benson could not handle the load and, due to his poor production and off the field issues, the team let him go this off season. It looks as though second round pick Matt Forte (Tulane) might get a chance to be the number one back in his rookie campaign

Moreover it lists some odds for the Bears.

3/1 to win the NFC North

15/1 to win the NFC

40/1 to win the Super Bowl

I have also seen 35/1 for the  Super Bowl elsewhere.
