The Phinsider Community Mock Draft: Pick #18 - Houston Texans

With the 17th pick in The Phinsider Community Mock Draft, the Minnesota Vikings select Derrick Harvey, DE, Florida.

Harvey picked up 58% of the vote.  He was followed by Phillip Merling (15%) and Gosder Cherilus (9%).

Here are the 5 most recent picks of our draft:

  1. Carolina Panthers - Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois (32%)
  2. Chicago Bears - Chris Williams, OT, Vanderbilt
  3. Detroit Lions - Jonathan Stewart, RB, Oregon
  4. Arizona Cardinals - Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy
  5. Minnesota Vikings - Derrick Hervey, DE, Florida

Next up, with the 18th pick, are the Houston Texans.  For the best insight and analysis on the Texans, head over to Battle Red Blog.  Below are the Texans' draft needs, courtesy of NFL Draft Countdown:

1. Offensive Tackle: From the broken record department: Houston still doesn't have a stud left tackle and you have to think they will eventually want to address that long-standing problem. You'd think.
2. Outside Linebacker: A bunch of 'backers left as free agents but it wasn't like they were stars anyway. They probably need at least one starter and the depth isn't anything to write home about either
3. Safety: This team hasn't had a top safety since its inception and now it looks like Von Hutchins, Will Demps, Michael Boulware, Glenn Earl and Jason Simmons are all set to hit the market this off-season.

While I think OT is their priority, corner is likely next. I took Jenkins here. The offensive linemen left here may be a reach.

Same thing here.
I took Jenkins as well. They'd love it if one of the RBs or OTs fell, but here they didn't. They'll go CB here.

i gotta disagree
I picked brandon albert. Kiper has him going 5 right now! even tho i think that is highly unlikely, it just goes to show you that his stock is skyrocketing. Therefore, i dont think grabbing Albert (someone everyone is considering a possible LT) at their position of greatest need is not a reach at all.

Cherilus would also be good but many are projecting him as a RT and Houston wants a LT. I think this pick would have to be Albert

I went with Albert too..
Since they were created, their QB has been getting pounded, and with the investment they made in Schaub last year, I don't think they want that trend to continue.. just a hunch lol..  and at the point in our draft the best LT prospect available is Albert, even if he's listed as a guard.  If he's gone by now, I think then they take their chances with Cherilus, or try to drop down and take Baker or Nicks.  With no second round pick, they almost have to go OL with this pick and hope a corner like Scandrick from Boise St. drops to them in the middle of the 3rd.
