Around SBN: The Gift Of The 2003 Tigers

Video Time: Cornerback Edition

It's Saturday, meaning it's time for a video.

Today, we got two for you. Both are of players the Dolphins could potentially target with pick #32 overall.

The first is Arizona CB Antoine Cason:

The second video is of Oklahoma DB Reggie Smith. Click "Read More" to see it.

Star-divide

Here's Oklahoma's Reggie Smith, who could possibly play CB or S in the NFL:

Feel free to discuss your thoughts on either of these 2 players below.

Barring any breaking Dolphins news (which is unlikely), I'll see you back here Sunday night/Monday morning.

Have a good weekend, all!

Not another tweener!
Draft a guy who can play CB, not another Jason Allen.

Sporano...
said it several times during his most recent interview that he (and you can assume BP as well) considers players who can play multiple positions as a valuable asset.  I am not saying Cason can play safety or not...but, in my opinion, his size and speed would not be a problem in the NFL at the Safety position.

That being said, my hope is that the new regime gets players that put some swagger back into the secondary.  Not since the days of Madison and Surtain (in their primes) have I sensed an air of confidence emitting from that unit.

Here is how the big dog see's it...
Both have great ball skills, but the thing that In my mind that makes Reggie Smith a better player and in my mind is how he flows to the ball and makes the play. Whether (<--- I know i spelled it wrong) it is on a pass, fumble, or a hard hitting tackle.

Last is that both of them have value in the return game, but Reggie Smith has the ability to get from stop to start so quickly it is unbelievable. Watch his video again on those fumbles or interceptions, how it takes him like 1-2 seconds to get to full speed (doesnt hurt that he runs around a 4.4)

That is why I have no problem with him being the 32nd overall pick (granted he is there)

on a side note.... did you guys notice on the first video or the cason guy that it just kept playing the same highlights over...like whole video in 3min had that irritating beat, and like 10 highlights max lol

The South Florida Fan likes Reggie Smith
I'm inclined to agree on Reggie Smith.  From what I've seen of their college play, Reggie Smith seems like more of a big-time player with more individual skills.  I also like his versatility (which SHOULD be an advantage, not a detriment this time).

We'll be plugging this site on The South Florida Fan (http://thesouthfloridafan.blogspot.com) Monday as the premier Dolphins site.  Please feel free to send people our way if you enjoy our content.

Thanks,

Not so fast my friend.....
A little Corso for you...

Obviously, with the name of "azphinner", I have a dog in this hunt.  Cason is HUGE and would be a steal if he is there at #32.  Whoever mentioned the same replays, agree - however some of the ones you didn't see where: Punt return & INT in the same game against Oregon this year where he essentially took over the game and led AZ to the win, last year's INT return for a TD late in the 4th quarter against an undefeated Cal team that won the game for AZ.

Cason is a playmaker, pure and simple.  He is a ball-hawk.  He was a 4-year starter who was left on an island and played man the majority of the time - AZ didn't play a lot of zone, especially the last 2 years.  He took away half the field on defense half the time and drew comparisons - rightfully so - to the best DB that has come out of AZ - Chris McAllister.

Having seen them both in person, the big thing McAllister has over Cason is size.  Other than that, they are both very similar players with Cason having a little more speed.

Nothing wrong with Reggie Smith, just want to make sure everyone understands that Cason is a BIG TIME talent - must be to win the Thorpe award.  Might not have performed at the combine like others, but on AND off the field, he is solid.

Definition of Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results...

either one would be a good pick
I watched both the videos and I did see both in action during the season, but I have trouble remembering the plays they made outside of these videos (it was months ago before I realized who I should be scouting lol).  In the videos they both show the ability to guard NFL caliber recievers.  Cason made a play on a Go route against DeSean Jackson where he ran with him the whole way and completely screened him away from the ball.  Smith went up with Limas Sweed and knocked it down, and made a play on a fade route against Crabtree (I think) from TexTech.

They both have the ability to make tackles in the open-field, Smith with a good low shot on Tony Temple of Mizzou, and Cason with a great form tackle against Patterson from USC on a reverse.

And.. they both show punt return ability.  If we end up with either of these 2, I won't be disappointed.  At the safety spot, I would love to see Kenny Phillips drop to us at 32, but more realistically I like DeCoud from Cal somewhere on day 2.

I like Cason a lot...
...but I don't think he'll still be there at #32. I feel like there's a few teams sleeping on this kid so they can snag him late in the first. Either at #28 to the Cowgirls or #30 to the Pack.

Tracy Porter vid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf2wgeIRDPo

This guy might be available at the BOTTOM of the 2nd round for our second pick.  Take a look at this crazy vid.  I know he blows it at the end, but man does he look explosive.  Same height, 2 pounds lighter, and one 10th of a second faster than Cason.

I'm excited about Porter possibly having a chance to be a Dolphin.
