Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

RUMOR: Next up for Miami: Trade Jason Taylor

Now that the Dolphins have signed their #1 pick, Jake Long, it's now time for the organization (and the trifecta, to be specific) to move on to other things.  One of those things, of course, is the rest of the draft, which as I point out here is very important to the future success of the team.

But the other thing the Dolphins must do is decide on the fate of Jason Taylor.  And as CBS Sports' Clark Judge writes, the Dolphins are already working hard on moving Jason Taylor:

The Miami Dolphins are busy. While they were working to finalize a five-year contract with first-round draft pick Jake Long, they were operating behind the scenes to strike a deal with another team for defensive end Jason Taylor.

Two clubs whom the Dolphins contacted confirmed Tuesday that Miami is shopping Taylor, looking for a mid-to-low first-round draft pick in return.

As much I love Taylor and everything he's meant to this organization, parting with JT would be very easy to deal with if the Fins got a 1st round pick in return.  However, it's very unlikely the Dolphins would indeed be able to get a 1st rounder:

"We're not interested," said one club's GM. "What, we're going to give up a first-round draft pick for someone who turns 34 this year? I don't think so."

One of the two teams to whom we spoke indicated it might have interest if the Dolphins were to lower their demands, but a source close to the club said it would surrender nothing higher than a third-round draft choice.

That seems to be the consensus around the NFL.  No team wants to part with too much for a 34 year old pass rusher.  But perhaps an interested team could find some middle ground with the Dolphins and give up a 2nd rounder and an additional late round pick for Jason.  In my view, though, if Miami can't get more than a 3rd round pick for Taylor, then there's no need to trade him at this point.  I'd then wait and see what happens come training camp.  A team that happens to get hit by some injuries once camp opens might be willing to part with more than they originally would of in return for Taylor.

But it does seem the Dolphins are at least working behind the scenes to gauge what kind of interest other teams have in Taylor.  After all, GM Jeff Ireland did say the following in response to a question about the advantage the Fins get having already signed their #1 pick:

"It's absolutely an advantage. Because now we can work on what we're going to do at 32, what we're doing regarding trades. We don't have to worry about anything else other than that what we're doing for the second pick on."

Perhaps Ireland was referring to trades involving picks.  But there is also the chance that he was also referring to Taylor and his future in Miami.

So just because we got our #1 pick signed, don't think for a moment that things aren't going to get more interesting as the week goes on.  A lot is still going to happen between now and Sunday.

Don't trade Taylor...unless...
We need that pass rushing that JT brings. Unless the brass have something lined up for Gholston or another quality DE, I say no. who's going to replace him? Vonnie Holiday????

JT is an OLB in our system
so Holliday won't be replacing him, he'll be at end in the 3-4 and probably tackle in the 4-3.  If we deal JT we need to get in position to grab a good pass rushing OLB, maybe Jerod Mayo? Or Quentin Groves?

JT has to be traded
The Fins would be dumb if they don't trade JT. Even if I like him to be a Fin for Life (Chargers - Seau .. someone) we are in rebuilding mode (finally). So you don't rebuild a team by gathering or keeping oldies. He is worth a good pick in 2008 and an even better in 2009 so we HAVE to trade him. By the way it would make sense to get a DE/LB in exchange out of the draft but we should take the best player available.

yeah, as long as we get something good for him...

no less than a very high 2nd this year. Otherwise, keep him until he retires.

Maybe I'm sentimental...
...but I still don't want to trade JT.  I get very optimistic this time of year and it's probably clouding my judgement, but I guess I don't feel that we're that far away from a return to glory.  I think we're already much better than the team that lost 6 games by three points or less.  Turn those games around and get some good coaching going and suddenly we're in the hunt.  Three months ago I would have said we're a three- to four-win team next year if the new regime knows what they're doing.  Right now, I think we could be a six- to eight-win team.  I think we're playoff bound in '09.  After that, who knows?  JT could definitely be a part of all this, and I'd love to see him hoisting the Lombardi trophy over his head in January, 2011, just before he announces his retirement.

Go Dolphins.

Jared Allen just got traded to the Vikes
So who is JT going to?  The Eagles?  There was some report of the Eagles putting an offer of either Lito Sheppard or a pick?  Thoughts?

to Jags?
rumor aweek ago the jags would give up their 1st which comes around 26 I think. But as some GM's say, no one wants to give up a 1st for a 34 year old. Keep him. We won't get a first and anything less isn't worth it

Also...
Being a big UM fan, if someone gives us a pick or we can get in position for Calais Campbell, I say do it.

The world is ours
It does not matter what happens, it seems that this regime is hell bent on building from the draft and taking big (Jake is freaking 6' 7") guys.  I am also thinking we should be looking at a TE as well.  I cannot wait until Sat.  I think we are already a much improved team.

Explain to me how can a coach go 1 - 15 and still be respected in this league.  Cam got a job right after he was canned?

it is the week
before the draft so the following is moot:
~~We're not interested," said one club's GM. "What, we're going to give up a first-round draft pick for someone who turns 34 this year? I don't think so."
One of the two teams to whom we spoke indicated it might have interest if the Dolphins were to lower their demands, but a source close to the club said it would surrender nothing higher than a third-round draft choice.~~

of course no on is going to come out and say they'd give up a #1 for him, cause miami would start asking for a 1 & 4....

if Allen who could be out of the league for a year plus the next time he gets behind the wheel of a car goes for what (a 1,2,&3 is the rumor) then JT is easily worth a 1 if he gurantee's he'll play 2-3 more years..

I don't want him to go, mind you, but if he is asking out then the phins should let him go if they get fair value for him.

yep, I can go along with that

i would love to see the fins be able to pull a 1st for him, but i would not be unhappy to see him working against Long in TC either.

out with old | inn with the new

i think Taylor has given the Dolphins some amazing years. as much as i would love to see JT retire a Phin, if Parcells & Company can get back into the 1st round or add a 2nd round pick – it would be amazing. Our secondary can get that much needed facelift it needs!

What's wrong with a second

If no one offers a 1st, but they are willing for a 2nd, whether it be the top or the lower portion of the round, I would accept it. Even if Jax offers a 3rd, I would take their 3rd AND the two picks (158 and 159) that they have in the 5th. Several teams have multiple picks in several rounds. Good quality picks out there. We’re not going to get a first unless that particular team when picking a DE realizes that Taylor is a better pick that Joe Jones. Taylor has a solid 2 – 3 years left in him with no letdown. What I do know (feel) is that Taylor WON’T be traded until draft day. Parcells won’t accept a pick now and have other teams jump over him to get a player that he covets. IF Taylor goes, it will be on Saturday, not before. I would love it if Detroit (1st – at #15) wants and trades for him . I dream about that – and that OG Branden Albert is there waiting for us. THEN WE HAVE OURSELVES A LINE!!!!!!!
