Jeff Ireland press conference recap (updated)

For the first and last time prior to the NFL Draft, which is just 9 days away, Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland met with the media.

So what was the highlight? Well, when asked about a question in regards to something along the lines of drafting players with potential against drafting productive college players (I do forget the actual wording of the question), Ireland actually made a slip up and said something about drafting the best player for this defense. The room burst out in laughter to which Jeff asked what he just said and the reporters pointed out that he said "for the defense." Ireland tried to correct himself, but it was an interesting moment. More on this as I hear it.

Update [2008-4-17 13:22:16 by Matty I]: Here's the actual quote of the slip. Ireland said about the first pick, "You hope that he's a pillar of your defense for a long time." Then everyone laughed and it was pointed out to him what he had said. Ireland responded, "A pillar of your defense or offense, your team." Ireland was asked if that was part of a smokescreen, to which he responded, "I'll let you guys decide." Interesting stuff, but who knows what, if anything, it means. [end update]

Update [2008-4-17 20:33:19 by Matty I]: There were reports, like the one on PFT which claim the Dolphins are circulating a transcript of the press conference, but with a minor change. Rather than the "pillar of your defense" quote, PFT reports that the transcript being circulated replaces "defense" with "team." However, as you can see right here on miamidolphins.com, the transcript does not have a change on it. The phrase "pillar of your defense" remains. So was it a slip or was it planned to make Jake Long and his agent more pressured to sign a lesser deal? We'll find out soon enough. [end update #2]

Other things Ireland said:

"How truthful can you be? Not as truthful as you want to be."
"We're not going to talk about strategy at this particular press conference."
(About the old Jimmy Johnson trade chart)
"People still use the draft chart. I don't necessarily know if it applies to the first pick anymore...because you're dealing with the economics."
(More about potential vs production)
"I'm going after the player that best fits us."
(About any phone calls from other teams interested in #1 pick)
"Have I fielded a ton of calls? I've fielded some."
(About any offers to the Dolphins for the #1 pick)
"People are interested. People are always interested in the first pick. I'm not going to tell you what people are asking or offering. But I would think the talks would heat up next week."

He also stressed the idea of the #1 pick having to be the "face of the franchise" and how he has to have excellent character and makeup.

About the current team, Ireland said he likes the team's current depth at safety. He said that tackle is obviously a need (no crap). And about the most recent signing, Will Billingsley, Ireland said, "He's a very fast corner." He went on to explain that he worked out for the team recently and ran very well, which is why the Dolphins decided to bring him in for a look. He was a safety in college, but the Dolphins will look at him as a corner right now.

One last thing that was interesting. Ireland was asked what positions other than quarterback he thinks are important to a team. He said the core positions, in his opinion, are cornerback, quarterback, left tackle, nose tackle, and a #1 receiver.

Thoughts on anything from this press conference below...

I think that's pretty honest, about Ginn
No one would consider Ginn a #1 WR at this point, and he may end up being a Stallworth kind of guy... a #2 guy who can stretch the field.

I think we are still looking for a true #1... with the right combination of size, speed, and reliability.  And I don't think he is on the roster yet.

For Ginn to be that guy, he'd have to get bigger, and better at routes.

can't believe I missed it...
... I couldn't get the site to load the video. :(

From what it sounds like he still needs more time in the Bill Parcells School of Handling Media.  No matter, as long as he's as good as advertised evaluating talent, I couldn't care less how he sounds in a press conference.  He could stutter.

I don't know what to make of the defense comment.  Was it just a harmless slip?  Or a giveaway? Considering what he named as core needs and the fact that there's been no mention of Dorsey at alll lately, I would think he just fxxked up.

Interesting...
that pass rusher was not one of his important positions.

right...
That got me too, I think it shows (maybe) that we're hanging on to JT and Porter for another year, so (maybe) a pass rushing LB/DE isn't a top priority going into this season...

Innerstin'
Bring on the Jakester!

I just was listening to Jim Rome interviewing Chris Long on the radio. Good interview. He too, said it would "Be an honore to be the #1 pick," and also added that "making a big chunk of money right away isn't nearly as important to him as being able to contribute & be a turning point for a team that's rebuilding."

I like this kid. If it ain't Jake at #1, he's the alternative I would be happy with.

WOW
Looks like a message to Big Bill, Hey I will sign for less money to be number 1. It could be Chris Long after all.

Ireland...
... didn't impress me as being polished enough to have executed an intentional smokescreen with his 'slip-up'. I think it was a real tip-off to what the current thinking is.

Consequently, I believe the Fins intend to draft a defensive player with their first pick. Whether his mistake comes to be considered a major gaffe depends on what happens, of course. If there is already a deal in the works to move down, this may indicate that a CB is a major area of interest. If there is no deal, then they are leaning toward C. Long or Gholston.

EXACTLY!
If you watch his body language when he first said "defense" and then after, when he was told what he said, you can of his jitters.  It's not easy speaking in front of people.  It takes a great deal of practice.
That's when things come out in words that can be in the subconscience.  Also things are said from the comfort zone, things you know about, things you know are true.  Facial expressions are another give away, if you know about the non-verbals, which can sometimes be easy to catch --  think of a parent knowing when their child is lying or telling the truth -- sometimes called a sheepish look or grin.
You hit it, I think "ufourya".  It wasn't suppose to be "offense" or "defense", but "team" in the response -- as in "overall", thus not giving any hints.  Unfortunately, in a team there's divisions -- besides those mentioned, like "Special Team", etc.  They've had Marino and Offerdahl, Marino and Cox, Marino and.....  So it's expected that you have a "pillar" on each side of the ball.  So it goes to what was said.
I'm still holding to a trade or Chris Long.

YUP...
I saw the reply on sportscenter just now.... after he was caught in the "freudian slip" he immediately looked to his left, where Bill Parecells was sitting to see his reaction.

They are using Jake Long in negotiations to give them leverage w/ someone else. So much for that leverage now.

He didn't say they were good.
Just that they were deep. I'd say having 9 safeties on the roster qualifies as being "deep".

I don't think it was a slip
I just think he mis-spoke. Ireland is probably great at his job, but from what I've been hearing of him public speaking is not one of his strong suits. Ever since I heard him when he was annouced as our GM.

Hes in bad shape
Cuz i belive that all the postions that jeff said the only one that we actually got is a nose tackle,But the rest were outta luck.We dont have a number one recevier and everybody knows that,Ted gin isnt ready to step up and be a leader yet he has to prove himself first. Cornerback we have good depth but a true number 1 we dont have that eaith,Will allen is a lil old and is out his prime and at best is a good solid 2nd corner in this league. Then you bring up quarterback with depth on that postion we got now, but a true number 1 that the hole team can have confidence starten next season,We dont have that eaith. The tackle postion i dont even wanna talk about that,You can say that with are o-line is only about 50% done.So that has alot of work to go............................................

I pretty much agree with you lionel
...it would be really helpful though if you could use some spaces and paragraphs in your posts.  They are hard to read, all bunched up like that.

Anyway, the only nits I will pick are that Will Allen isn't really old, and he is probably, actually, coming into his prime - whatever that is.  He has never been a great cover guy, but he is pretty good... he just doesn't have great hands.  But I agree, he is not a true #1, and we need to draft someone early in the draft at that position.

The other is that we just don't know about Ginn, but I tend to agree with you... that he will be a vertical threat WR, KR guy like Stallworth, but maybe not a true #1 guy.  However, as others have pointed out here, if he gets stronger and refines his route running, he COULD be a very good #1 WR.

I think Ireland mentioned NT because what we have there is a stopgap and several question marks.  Fergusen will be okay for a couple of years, and Starks may be a guy that can grow into the position, but if they want to play a 3-4, they need to find the next young guy at the position.

QB is a position that we need to draft to until we find the franchise guy.  We don't need to use a #1 pick every year, but we certainly need to keep picking up developmental guys.  Both Beck and McCown (I can't believe I am going to say this, Nat) have potential.  Beck is our best shot, but even though McCown hasn't had success with his career so far, he is still young and may just need to be in the right situation.

IMO  :)
