Video Time!

It's Saturday, which means it's time for a video. At the risk of people saying I have a "man-crush" on John Beck, below is a video of John's final performance of the 2007 season against the Bengals. Notice how much better he looks compared to his outings against the Jets and Bills. Could it be it's because he had time to throw? Very possible. Of course, the Bengals were also sitting back with a big lead, but nonetheless, it's fun to see how accurate John is when he has time to get his feet.

Two throws in particular I want to highlight. The first is at about 1:15 of the video on a 3rd and 4 play. John drops back, plants his feet, and throws a strong and accurate pass to Greg Camarillo running the skinny post to gain about 13. The other is at 1:42 of the video. Beck throws a beautiful pass to Derek Hagan, who is open down the seam in between 3 or 4 Bengal defenders. Again, John has time to drop back, set his feet, and deliver a pass with just the right amount of speed and touch to pick up 22 yards.

Barring any breaking Dolphins news, I'll see you back here Sunday night/Monday morning. Have a good weekend, all!

I'm not going to go there but...
He does have a very quick release...  I was so let down by the way the desperate coaching staff introduced us to John Beck last year.  They really only gave him an opportunity to fail right out of the gate.  Let's hope that...scratch that...the new Dolphin regime WILL do things much differently.  Thanks for the clip...I remember getting real excited watching BYU clips before last season.  I don't care what people say, this kid can play.

John Beck
I think John's the real deal.  With the new regime in place, and some talent around him, I believe he's just what we need.  Here's to the future!

how cool
thanks for this post...he looks really good, even throwing strong and accurate when he's running off-balance like in that TD throw.
BTW, Lorenzo Booker! Did we forget he is on our team?

But I've watched Beck in this game a number of times. He's the truth, can't wait to see him next year and after that.

...just hit "play."

I purposely made it without a thumbnail to that it would be harder to detect for deletion.

Lorenzo!!
Why did this guy sit out 3/4 of the season? He's explosive and looks like he could be our secret weapon on 3rd downs. Kind of reminds me of a better and bigger darren sproles.
Give Beck a Chance

Yeah,
I wound up having a "man crush" on LoBo at the end of that video.  If he could add twenty pounds of muscle, he'd be a real force in the league.  LoBo, have you heard of HGH?

by gophish on Mar 8, 2008 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

LoBo.....
I like everything I've seen of this guy so far. The only knock on him is that he may be to small to take the pounding consistantly at RB. So how about lining him up as the slot receiver? Brown/Williams in the backfield, Ginn on the outside and LoBo in the slot........with some help on the o-line to give BECK some time, how can a team defend that?

QB
I know Bill wants Atlanta to think we are considering Matt as our first pick, but I beleive that is just a ploy. We have more pressing needs right now and Beck could work. I thinks Beck should get at least one year and if he bombs then we should be in good postion to pick a QB next year!

by dolphan67 on Mar 8, 2008 10:24 AM EST reply actions

What I Saw In this Video...
...was 10 passes that were under 10 yds. On those, you better be accurate. I saw 2 passes that were over 10 yds down the field. Thone was a beautiful throw down the middle of the field. The other, a breakdown in the defense that left a wide open guy in the back of the endzone.

Now it may seem that I am being hyper-critical of Beck. Let me say that I do like him and his abilities. He can be very accurate on the short passes, and I've seen some glimpses of accuracy down the field. I wanted him to play immediately after the bye week last year and let him ride out the year, hits to the ego and all. This "kid" doesn't have a lot of time to show he can be a good starter.

What do I need to see more of to see if he's the answer to our QB problem? I need to see if he has consistent accuracy on the passes that are more than 10 yds. If he isn't consistently accurate down the field, he's another Jay Fiedler. What that means is that the team CAN win with him, but will NOT win because of him. It means he will be a middle of the pack QB at best. Without that accuracy down the field, he is just another caretaker of the QB position for us.

We'll know what BP thinks of him by how he drafts. If he picks one of the 2nd tier QB's, Henne, Flacco, etc.. its my opinion that he doesn't view him as a longterm solution. If he waits until the later rounds to draft a QB, then that tells me that BP thinks Beck can get the job done. We'll see.

by dab415217 on Mar 8, 2008 10:53 AM EST reply actions

That Is...
...assuming we don't draft Matt Ryan, which is my first choice.

by dab415217 on Mar 8, 2008 11:17 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed..
To even be considered a QB at the NFL level Beck has to be able to make those short passes accurately and consistantly. When he had some time to throw the ball I believe he demonstrated that ability. The few balls thrown downfield seemed to be acceptable at least but not enough of them to make an educated decision on that. Looked like the long passes were accurate in college though, let's hope he can bring that ability with him to the next level. I will disagree about drafting a QB early this year however. You can't have too many good QBs on the roster and if Flaaco is available in the 2nd round I think we've got to take him. Maybe he develops into our "QB of the future" or maybe he's just a back up plan for Beck. Hopefully not McCown. Who knows? But I do believe that they should go O-line at #1 if unable to trade out and Flaaco if available later. Wont matter if it's Marino in his prime at QB if he's getting killed before he can throw the ball. Just my 2 cents for whatever it's worth.

...that was a perfectly thrown ball. It hit him in stride and resulted for a touchdown.

Huh? Wut? That was the other team's player? Nvermind. :(

by dab415217 on Mar 8, 2008 11:36 AM EST up reply actions

No excuse
I agree that there was no excuse for that play, and I personally called for him to be benched after that play.  But how many people have made similar fumbles like that and are still doing well.  Didn't Tony Romo lose a game after fumbling a snap in a playoff game last year?  Remember also that was in Buf and it is pretty cold up there.  I hate cold weather and could see myself doing something like that too.  Also, isn't he a rookie and not a seasoned NFL veteran?  Lastly do not forget that the coaching staff essentially threw him under the bus until Lemon got hurt.

I am not sure what Bill Parcell's will do, but I think it will be between the Long's and Ryan (with the edge going to the Longs).  However, it would be nice to see how Beck does behind Jake Long next year.

Just my take.

Beck reminds me of Griese
Thanks for assembling the Beck v. Cincy highlight reel.  This is the game I have been recommending folks look at to get a good idea of what Beck and his receivers can do if the OL can simply give him some time.

You see a great array of passes, all with touch and accuracy.

The shuttle pass

Throwing on the roll out

Dump off with touch to Booker over the blitzing LB in his face.

Slicing passes over the middle between coverage.

Cinci had not given up and was challenging the receivers in nickel and dime formations.

Rather than picking Ryan, stick with Beck and pick Jake Long to bookend with Carey to give Beck the kind of time he saw in the Cinci game.  I promise you will be happy with the results.

You guys checked the front page of SI today...
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/the_bonus/03/06/long/index.html

At some point the comparisons to Howie began to fade. Even though they both played defensive end in a 3-4, Chris is clearly quicker with his feet and his hands, so much so that he's capable of becoming an outside linebacker in the NFL. Steve Rosner, who represents Howie and used to represent Lawrence Taylor, turned to Howie during a game at Virginia last fall and told him, "Chris is as close to Lawrence Taylor as anybody I've ever seen."

The Miami Dolphins, who have the first pick in the draft, will have all the intelligence they need on Chris. Their new executive vice president is Bill Parcells, under whom Groh worked as an assistant during Parcells's stints with the New York Giants, New England Patriots and New York Jets. Groh has told Parcells, "He's your kind of player."

by cappy on Mar 8, 2008 2:41 PM EST reply actions

Chris isn't as long or as strong as...
he needs to be to make the impact right away that people think he will.  First pick?  I like Jake Long or Vernon Gholston...but as I have stated before, we can't rightfully complain about a number #1 pick.  I would still like to see Parcells trade the pick and would  even like to see Jason Taylor traded if we can get a decent return.

by misterx on Mar 8, 2008 5:00 PM EST reply actions

To Beck or not to Beck...that is the question
Beck may or may not be the future long term answer at QB, but I do believe he will be the short term solution.  Last season did not do Beck or the fans any justice, simply put, we saw terrible coaching and even worse quarterback management.  He made good throws and bad throws...he looked great at times and terrible at times.  The fact is, he didn't get a chance to answer the question:  "Will the real John Beck please stand up?"  Parcells should still go after a Flacco or a Woodson in the draft to develop as an option; as someone above mentioned, you can't have to many good QB's.  Our new QB coach comes with a pretty good resume as well, so I feel good about that situation.  Oh...and McCown assuredly is here as a backup.

by misterx on Mar 8, 2008 5:17 PM EST reply actions

Father and son day...
As far as the comparisons of Chris Long to his father??  Howie would get crushed in todays NFL and his boy is going to have hit the weight room to avoid the same...even at the OLB positon that he is better suited for.  Football intelligence and character aside, it isn't my opinion alone that he is undersized and a little too weak to make the immediate impact that most want out of him. With that being said, I'm sure he will be a success in the NFL and I surely wouldn't hate to see him in a Dolphins uniform.  By the way, that's a real cute picture of him and his daddy...for what it's worth.  Not a lot in my opinion.  Howie Long is not my favorite and correct me if I'm wrong but it has seemed over the years that the Dolphins aren't his favorite either.

by misterx on Mar 8, 2008 5:35 PM EST reply actions

Something to consider..
I don't know about you guys, but let's take into consideration that our O line stunk up the place last year, you put a young qb like Beck in there and he is getting constantly pressured. Let's try to solidify the O line and add a couple of other weapons on the wr core. Give the kid protection and I think he can succeed.

by pingusthegreat on Mar 8, 2008 10:43 PM EST reply actions

Captain Moroni
He has a great release. It could be one of the best releases in the NFL right now. Most of the good quarterbacks in the league have big releases that emphasize deep ball touch. That's why guys like Mcnabb always throw at the receiver's feet when passing short. He looks good and that clip showed what he can do with a little confidence. Let's get a pass catching tight end that can also protect the lad. David Martin lost at least one game (Pittsburgh) last year with his sorry blocking.

by The Phinisher on Mar 9, 2008 12:58 PM EDT reply actions

you left out the bad clips...
this was more the lorenzo booker show then anything else. u left out the 7 fumbles because of small hands.  and also his god awful 5 starts where he showed his true colors.  this was left out.  also, lorenzo booker's runs that gave Beck room as well of the fact that this game was over with already and the defense wasn't really playing here...just many third stringer.  BP! Bring us Matt Ryan or "at least" Joe Flacco with Jake Long.

by mred on Mar 9, 2008 1:38 PM EDT reply actions

john beck sucks
John Beck sucks.  We need Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco! This clip only shows Beck in garbage time of a game that was over with.  also, this clip doesn't show the 7 fumbles because of small hands and left out that lorenzo booker ran like a mad man that is even the reason beck had those passes to begin with.  john beck sucks.

by mred on Mar 9, 2008 1:40 PM EDT reply actions

ok
enlighten me. What makes you think Matt Ryan will be better than Beck?

by Matty I on Mar 9, 2008 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed
If you think Mr. I threw 19 interceptions in the ACC Matt Ryan will do better, than I have to disagree.  Start with the offensive and defensive lines and get them better.  But, I do agree that it serves to have another QB that is good on the roster (in addition to McNown) so I would not be upset if we drafted Flacco, Brohm or that guy from Michigan in the 2nd round.  But Ryan at #1 is a wasted pick when our O-line and d-lines both suck.  Also look at the money a QB at #1 will demand.  Does that guy Russell from the Raiders ring a bell.  How good would it look for our #1 pick to hold out for half the season?

Just my take.

by resman on Mar 9, 2008 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

So does John Elway, Steve Young and every other QB
I'll say it once again, QBs are not good in their first year. Just because Dan Marino was good does not mean it's normal. We were very spoiled in many ways by having Dan and one of those is that we haven't had to watch the Dolphins attempt to develop a QB for near 30 years. Well, the gig is up, we have to now. We tried getting one in free agency, that did not work. We have to develop a QB. Rookie QBs not named Dan Marino are invariably terrible. There are few exceptions, even Peyton Manning who had a pretty good rookie season went 3-13.

by Offer Doll on Mar 9, 2008 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Not to mention Flaccco.
I like Flacco as well but I don't see why he would be better than Beck. Maybe he will. Maybe he won't.

Everybody knows that the dolphins need a cornerback,So why dont we go for lito sheppard.Hes young hes from florida and he can be our number one corner,He wants otta of the eagles so why shouldnt he come back to his home state. If not him then we eaitha go get deangalo hall,We need a top corner already and nows the time for that to happen......................

Lito
would be a great addition but we can't afford to give up a lot of draft picks, if any.  Maybe if we were to accumulate more picks (via a trade down with Atlanta and/or Dallas?) then we could possibly try and flip a 2nd rounder for Sheppard.  But if we don't amass more picks then we should probably pass.  You have to build through the draft.

by JMFlyer1454 on Mar 9, 2008 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Reasons for the predicament we are in
The main reason for why we are in the predicament we are in is simply because we just gave away draft picks.  Hence this is why there are not many (if any) players on the roster from 2001 - 2004 on our team right now.  I would say right now the only trade we should consider would be a trade from #1 down for more picks.  Other than that stand pat and keep all the rest of our picks.  This front office knows how to hard ball people, and if other teams want to screw us like we have been before, those days are over.  For instance, giving up a 5th round pick for Trent Green and giving Culpepper up for nothing after spending what a 2nd round pick for him?  Come on, I have had enough of giving away our picks.  Lets keep them and build a roster that will be here for a few years, not a few minutes.

by resman on Mar 9, 2008 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

BECK
I personally was very excited for Beck this past season, and thought the Dolphins have finally found their future QB in John Beck. However with his play last year, it led to many doubts, but it wasnt his fault. He had no help at all! ; best RB: Ronnie Brown-injured, Best WR: Chris Chambers-traded, best overall player on offense: Jesse Chatman-Free agent coming off a couple year break.
Im not giving up on Beck yet, he deserves a second chance, and I feel and hope he will thrive as a Dolphin.

Also remember
that Cam restricted Beck from throwing long.  He played a VERY conservative game.  Thank you Cam.  I do believe that a QB should be drafted, - I do not guess which round - BP will tell us - this rookie QB will offer competition to Beck, making Beck a better QB.  And they MUST throw long.  But they MUST HAVE AN OFFENSIVE LINE to protect them.  Remember Brady in the SB?  No line, and he was rushed and harrassed.  Beck did look timid and very nervous, fumbling before anyone was even near him.  Typical rookie reaction.  I believe he's going to be a fine QB.  That release is great.
