Baseball's Opening Day 2008

Well today is one of my favorite "non-football" days of the year.  It's opening day for Major League Baseball.

Now I know some of you hate baseball.  And if that happens to be the case, then don't read this thread.

But for those who are as excited as I am, here's what I wanted to do.

First, tell us who your favorite team is and then tell us why they will win their division.

Then give us all your World Series picks.

I'll start by saying I'm a St. Louis Cardinals fan.  I'll make my case for them as NL Central champs later on today in the "comments."

And my World Series prediction is simple.  It's Red Sox vs. Mets.  Why?  Because those are the two teams I absolutely hate the most (even more than the Cubs) and, usually, the things I don't want to happen actually do happen.  So I'm saying it's a Red Sox/Mets World Series with the Red Sox winning it for the 2nd year in a row.

Now it's your turn below...

To go along with your prediction
Boston will have an amazing season, almost could consider it a "perfect" season.  Then in the World Series the underdog Mets will make an improbable run to defeat the Red Sox.

Baseball call...
Life long Atlanta Braves fan, and have endured/enjoyed the worst to first years. My hope is a replay of a Braves/Indians World Series from 1995.  The reason?...deepest overall lineup in the league.  Of course...Opening Night vs. the Nats stunk...but also showed the Braves are ready to compete.

Marlins fan
I guess I'm in the minority but I think (by think, I mean hope) the Marlins can compete in the NL East.  They've done it before with a group of young talent that comes together and makes a deep run into the postseason.  My World Series prediction is a Marlins over Yankees in 7. Hanley Ramirez = WS MVP.  Followed by Ramirez and Game 7 Winner Andrew Miller signing with the Yankees.

haha sorry every now and then I like to visit my Baseball fantasy world.  Real Prediction Tigers over Mets.

Thise rose-colored glasses are awesome.
Where can I get a pair? :)

I'm a marlins fan, too. However, the only thing they'll be competing for is the cellar.

Gotta look at it differently
The Marlins are just a really really good AAA team.  Everytime we win a game it feels like App St. over Michigan lol

My team
The Red Sox

They'll win their division because they are the best overall team in it. Pitching, hitting, vets, rookies, you name it. The NY what?

They'll go on to beat the Cubs in the WS to win their 3rd championship in 5 years.

I'm a Mariners fan....
Seattle couldn't  be any farther away from south Fla, but when I was in the military I was stationed in NW Washington.  Going to Mariners games became one of my favorite things.

They actually have a chance to win their division because the other teams in the AL west stinks or have too many injuries to contend with.

My WS pick:  Red Sox over Diamondbacks in 5.

New Continent
I am so sick of the Red Sox, Patriots, and now Celtics I wish the whole state would break off and float to Europe...

Red Sox Dynasty...ha what a joke, 2 wins in 4 years, Minnesota won in 87 &91, no one mentioned dynasty, Toronto won in 92 AND 93 no dynasty. Lets not forget the Red Sox were a a game 6 vs Cleveland in 07 and a game 4 & 5 vs the Yankees in 04 where they were outs away from being eliminated and would still have not won since 1918.

Lets be clear they were Champions of that year, that's it...

Phillies fan
I'm actually a fan of every Philadelphia team, since  I grew up an hour away from the city, EXCEPT the Eagles.  Have loved the Dolphins for as long as I can remember.  Everyone asks me why and I don't really have a concrete answer because I have liked them [the Dolphins] as long as I can remember.

Anyway, the Phillies will win the NL East because they have the best offense in the NL, maybe even the  MLB.  Their pitching may be average but the Myers/Hamels 1-2 punch will be enough to capture the NL East crown for a second straight year...I wish.

I'm going to go with Tigers over Dodgers in the World Series.  Just want to mix it up a little.

toronto bluejays
hey they've actually got a pretty good rotation,,,though being in the same division as the yankees and red sox makes it tough

hey they finished ahead of the red sox in the standings two years ago,,,, had terrible health last year, which will undoubtedly be there key to any chance at a run for the wild card spot,,,, to have a chance they need:

  1. healthy and successful BJ Ryan
  2. healthy and successful AJ Burnett
  3. helthy and successful Scott Rolen
  4. healthy and successful Vernon Wells
last year all four of these guys battled injuries,,, but if they play at the top of their game, and everyone else stays more or less healthy, hey they have a shot, cause their are a couple great young arms in their rotation (marcum, mcgowan). i like the pick up of eckstien and expect rios to continue blossoming into the all-star outfielder he is

as for world series, i'll go detroit losing to the brewers (prince fielder will do his share, can eric gange be the eric gange of old, or at least make up for cordero's departure?) ...............fuck the mets....

St. Louis Cardinals
Why will they win the NL Central?

First, they have the best hitter in the game, Mr. Albert Pujols.  You can bring up Arod and Oritz and anyone else all you want, but Albert is the game's best hitter.  The numbers don't lie.

They also have a solid group of young players who are hungry to prove themselves.  Guys like Rick Ankiel, Skip Schumaker, and Brian Barton.  I also like the addition of Troy Glaus, who will provide some pop behind Pujols in the lineup.

The pitching rotation, of course, is questionable.  Outside of Adam Wainwright, they really don't have too much right now.  I like the addition of Kyle Lohse, but he is far from a reliable pitcher.  But I do think they'll be able to stay afloat until Chris Carpenter comes back (hopefully) in July.

Most importantly, though, the reason the Cards will win the division is because that division just isn't very good.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

"stats dont lie"
"stats dont lie" is a tough argument against a-rod for best hitter, he'll end up with 150-200 more homers than pujols,,,,, i dont like arod, and much prefer pujlos or vlad,,,, but a-rod produces the best numbers in the game

by buster on Mar 31, 2008 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions

what I mean by the stats is looking at more...
...than HRs and RBIs.

Look at batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage.  Those are the meaningful numbers.

by Matty I on Mar 31, 2008 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

matty I,
how do you like the glaus-rollen swap?

they both have a lot of potential with the bat, but can frustrate,,, felt like glaus just wasn't around for the real big hit when it was needed.... if he's healthy he should put up very solid numbers in that cards lineup

by buster on Mar 31, 2008 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

i like the move
glaus provides more pop behind Pujols.  Rolen can hit for a better average, but lacks that pop he once had.

Also, though, the La Russa/Rolen fued was getting pretty bad and was a distraction so I'm glad that's over with now.
