Dolphins are shopping the QB's

Just caught thison Fan Nation truth & rumors:

http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/44551

Seems they had Henne work out already, and have requested a private workout session with Brian Brohm. Interesting. Has anyone heard if Ryan is coming down for a workout, or Flacco?

I'm really curious who they really will go after. Looks like a crap shoot, to me.

Yes to a private workout with
Ryan, heard nothing about a private workout with this site's beloved Flacco.
"It all starts with the Dolphins," an executive with another team said Sunday, "and not a single person here has any idea what they're going to do."

I think the Brohm workout request is because...
...there has been speculation that he has been dropping on teams' draft boards. Even to the point of being available with the #32 pick. If the Phins are passing on Ryan, and there is a good chance that Brohm could drop to late enough in the 1st round, even 2nd round territory, he becomes a very intriguing prospect. I'd take him before I would take Henne. Seems as if BP and company are doing their due diligence if this scenario occurs.

I definitely
like Brohm more than Henne, assuming those were my choices. Brohm is much more polished, makes better decisions, and is almost certainly far more ready to play right away than Henne.

As we've all noted, the dolphins are doing the QB shuffle....talking to different QB's, but not tipping their hand. How much of it is genuine and how much is just a play remains to be seen.

I think come draft day, if we see the fins take a QB in round 1 or 2, then you have to think they are not ready to solely commit to Beck as the team's QB. Otherwise, if they take someone later, then you figure it would be as a potential backup/3rd stringer.

As we get closer and closer....
to the draft, I'm thinking the Dolphins will almost certainly pick a quarterback somewhere in the first couple of rounds.  With all of the private workouts of other QBs, I don't think that BP & Co. are sold on Beck, and rightfully so.  Working out and talking up Matt Ryan to try and generate another teams anxiety is one thing, but seriously looking at every draftable quarterback is another thing entirely.

I'm just curious though, in the trifecta of Bill, Jeff and Tony, who do you think has the most say in personnel decisions like drafting a QB?  The easy answer is BP, but I think that he probably trusts Jeff enough to defer if they disagree.

Tidbit from Matt Mosley of ESPN
who has quite a few connections in the league:

DISCLAIMER: Please use extreme caution when handling the following draft nuggets. These are fresh off the stove.

    * The Miami Dolphins are the most tight-lipped organization in football right now. Bill Parcells broke his silence to say a few words to New York Daily News columnist Gary Myers last week, but it wasn't anything particularly revealing. The Dolphins would prefer trading out of the pick, but they won't find a willing partner. I have Miami choosing Virginia defensive end Chris Long right now, but Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan is still a strong possibility. I think Ryan has the intangibles that Parcells is looking for, and it wouldn't be the first time the former head coach drafted a quarterback No. 1 overall (Drew Bledsoe).

I'm told that Parcells has spent hours pouring over tape of Ryan and that he and GM Jeff Ireland have talked to pretty much anyone who's been associated with him. If the Dolphins can reach an agreement with Ryan before the draft, I think they take him. If not, they'll stick with Long.

Kiper
says that he thinks the fins might take Ryan if, and it is a big if, they can reach a deal (contract) with him before the draft.

How's that for throwing the Ryan advocates, a bone? :)

Well I don't think
it will happen either - meaning, we won't pick Ryan.

However, just to play devil's advocate...

Matty - can you see 100% for sure that Ryan won't be picked?

I know you think it won't happen (nor do I) but do you consider it a given?

I won't say I'm 100% sure...
...but I would be shocked if they draft Ryan.

And this isn't just based on my opinion, either.

(I'll leave it at that)

You're killing me Matty
I know you know something the rest of us don't about Beck or Matt Ryan with this new regime. I know that the Cowboys last year really liked Beck.

Ain't dis fun?
Love the intrigue of it all....

Spring is in the air...........

Can't wait till Draft Day, (heck, I used a sick day on a Saturday last year, to watch it).

This should be an interesting year. I do like the way Bill is playing it so far though. He's got a pretty good poker face, wouldn't you say?

Would love to see Brohm drop..
.. he would've been a 1st round QB in last years draft, so to see him drop all the way to 32 would be an absolute steal in my opinion.  I've heard that he's the top QB on a few teams boards ahead of Ryan, so I think whatever BP and Co. feel about Beck, to get a top flight QB in the second round is something they won't pass up.

That being said, we all know this isn't a one year process of rebuilding, so I think that this year may be Beck's chance to prove himself, and if he doesn't, we'll be back in the top of next years draft looking at QB prospects again. (I like Graham Harrell from Tex Tech)
Check Harrell's stats here, and click on attempts to get a side by side comparison of Matt Ryan.

You figure
Matthew Stafford is going to be in the discussion of top QB's next year - if he were to come out of course.

The question with Texas Tech QB's is going to be similar to that raised about Brennan this year - are they a product of the system?

Hopefully we won't be pondering this next year, for if we were, then it will have been another poor year with yet one more failure at QB.

by Natalya on Mar 26, 2008 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

true
good point about him possibly being a system type qb in the Colt Brennan mold, but Harrell threw more passes, had a better completion percentage, and played against much much better competition in the Big XII than Brennan did in the WAC. He also has better size and mechanics to him than Brennan who is only about 6'1 190.  Harrell is about 6'3 or 6'4 and 200+ lbs.

I think if were in the Top 5 again it probably means Beck didn't get the job done and we need a QB, and if we have an ok year and end up outside of the top 10 it means Beck made strides and we won't be in the market for a 1st round QB, so its about as close to win-win as you can get with a rebuilding team lol.

Well...
he certainly is bigger and stronger than Brennan, no question there.

Then again, just to take the counterpoint, Andre Ware and David Klingler were both big guys with incredible numbers in college. Both played not too far from where Harrell is now. I just think those are things to ponder that scouts will probably consider when a college QB comes out of a system that tends to inflate their stats....I suspect you'll see the same questions asked of say, Tim Tebow, when he comes out because of the type of offense he plays in. Kevin Kolb's career as an NFL'er will be interesting too, as he came out of a prolific passing offense in college also.

Back to this year...

Do you think the fins will take a QB? If so, who do you think they'll get and/or who would you like to see them get?

I'm not high on Henne and while I like Ryan, I'm not sure he's an elite prospect in the way some other #1 overall QB's have been (Carson Palmer for example). I find Brohm or Flacco to be interesting prospects and to not require nearly the same investment (moneywise) as Ryan.

System QB's are never easy to scout
your definitely right on the system qb history and i guess its more of a case by case kinda thing..  As far as this year, unless Brohm drops to 32 or Flacco to 57, I'd wait till day two.  Maybe grab JD Booty in the third or fourth, or possibly Josh Johnson if the Parcells regime decides we could use a dual threat in certain situations. If the #1 pick isn't Ryan (which I doubt it is) it means Beck will be starting this season and whoever we draft will be a number 3.

Outside of getting 1st round talent in round 2, I'd wait till next years draft, so we can gauge Becks progress, and fill some other needs later in the draft.  I honestly can't wait until draft day so all these questions will be answered.
