The Phinsider Community Mock Draft: Pick #7 - New England Patriots

With the sixth pick in The Phinsider Community Mock Draft, the New York Jets select Vernon Gholston, DE, Ohio State.

Gholston picked up 56% of the vote, with Glenn Dorsey picking up 15% and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie getting 11% of the vote.

So the mock draft now looks like this so far:

  1. Miami Dolphins - Chris Long, DE, Virginia (49%)
  2. St. Louis Rams - Jake Long, OT, Michigan (67%)
  3. Atlanta Falcons - Matt Ryan, QB, BC (68%)
  4. Oakland Raiders - Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas (47%)
  5. Kansas City Chiefs - Ryan Clady, OT, Boise St. (30%)
  6. New York Jets - Vernon Gholston, DE, Ohio St. (56%)
Next up with pick #7 is everybody's favorite team to hate, the New England Patriots.  For Patriots' news and insight, you can check out Pats Pulpit.  And as always, the Pats' draft needs are below and are courtesy of NFL Draft Countdown:
1. Cornerback: Asante Samuel is gone. Randall Gay is gone. Heck, they even lost Eugene Wilson! Other than maybe Ellis Hobbs there is not anything resembling a starting-caliber corner on their roster.
2. Linebacker: Tedy Bruschi is essentially playing on a year-to-year basis now, all of their starters are at least 30-years-old and to say there is little or no depth to speak may be a huge understatement.
3. Offensive Tackle: Matt Light is solid at left tackle but certainly not special while Nick Kaczur has been just a marginal starter in the NFL and was exposed at times throughout the season and playoffs.

Corner
I think the Patriots are going to take a corner here. I think Gholston if he's there but corner if not. The hard part is projecting which one they'll take. I'm going to go with Talib because of his proven track record, but honestly I'm not sure who they like.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie
"It all starts with the Dolphins," an executive with another team said Sunday, "and not a single person here has any idea what they're going to do."

i had the jets taking him... but if they don't NE probably will..

simply amazing
wow dorsey is one of the few guys out there who have 1st pick talent in this draft and so far it
looks like people are picking mid round CB's over him....

I find it very unlikely that the pats would pass on dorsey if he was sitting there for him.

Question W NY...
let's suppose Dorsey is sitting available at #7.

Why would the pats take him when they have Wilford, Warren, Seymour, and Green on the interior of their defensive line? That's a top notch interior DL. Plus none of those guys is particularly old.

Why would they pick Dorsey when they have those 4 guys on their DL while only Bryant and Hobbs at corner?

For the record....I had Dorsey going to KC at 5. though I could see him going to Atlanta at 3 or Oakland at 4.

good question
best availible... they are one of those teams that believes you can never draft enough linement.
plus he's better then at least 2 of those guys and seymour hasn't really held up for them the last couple years....

as to dorsey in the 3-4 maybe, but the talent level is just too high for BB to pass on a gift like this.

granted - i think dorsey will likely go long before this.

Good point Matt...
Dorsey doesn't really fit the NE scheme for the same reasons he doesn't fit in with the dolphins. He's not thought of as a good candidate to be a DT in a 3-4, as the fins & pats play.

And W NY, I have to say I think Seymour has been pretty unstoppable since they got him. He's got what, 5 pro bowls in 6 seasons? Granted he wasn't as good last year but I think he's still a top player for them.

Anyway, I think we agree Dorsey won't be there at 7 so this is really just a rhetorical discussion with him & the pats.

i had to go CB
but i dont think there is any way dorsey AND ellis both last this long......ah well, it is fun anyway,,,

as for "everybody's favorite team to hate",,, i will admit my hate for the jets will always top my hate for the pats,,,, its been that way since i was ten years  old, fuck the jets

It could of course play out in some other way...
but I have a difficult time seeing NE completely pass on the CB spot in the first round as they lost Samuel & Gay, leaving them with Hobbs and Bryant. Not exactly a fearsome twosome.

Speaking of twosomes, to me it comes down to to Cromartie or McKelvin. I see Talib as much more of a FS prospect in the future given his size and decent speed.

McKelvin nominally played a better competition at Troy than Cromartie at Tenn. St. Still, the sunbelt conference isn't exactly the SEC. Cromartie is a bit taller, a bit faster, while McKelvin might be a bit more physical but the differences are small here.

I think Cromartie is their pick though they could just as easily go with McKelvin.

What about Dorsey?
Do you really believe Dorsey will drop this far.  No way, in fact don't be surprised if Atlanta grabs him.

Agreed
I think they'll take him at 3 as well.

DRC
I went with Rodgers-Cromartie based on the fact that NE needs secondary help bigtime and they always seem to do fine with linebackers in the later rounds.  As for DRC over the other corners, he's the top corner on Dallas' board and they play a pretty similar style of D, so the NFL guys in Big D must think he fits that style better than Talib and McKelvin

The pats have...
wilford, warren, seymour, and green on the DL - the strongest part by far of their defense - there's no way they pick a lineman here.

Give Brady an Tackle
Coz the Giants showed what happens. Otah or even wonderlic genius Williams with the intangibles...ha ha.

intangibles
seems like the word of the draft this year, as opposed to words like upside, freak, beast, or any of the other words all the jr kipers pick up and run with this time of year.

LB from Southern Cal
