Jawz on John Beck

Hey everybody, since we're all watching college highlights & wondering who the Feash will pick, I thought I'd bring this in from the last draft.

I absolutely LOVE watching Ron Jaworski analyze teams, plays, players, etc. He has a great ability to help idiots like us understand everything that goes into a play, and what's going on that you wouldn't otherwise notice.

Click on this link & watch Jawz break down John Beck's talents & maybe it will give us all a little faith that with Parcells assembling a whole team around him that he'll take off this year.

Unfortunately,..
...its a year later and we still have no proof of whehter Beck is going to be THAT QB.

I'm also curious how this early in the process any of us can come to the conclusion that Parcells is building a team around him. FAITH would be the only thing we have to go by.

Like it has been said before, if Parcells really believes he's the guy, then we won't see a high draft pick used on a QB. We shall see in a little over a month.

Oh that's good stuff
I've had faith in this kid all along. I'd just like to see the Dolphins give him more weapons - and a nasty line to protect him.

BECK WILL BE GOOD!
I THINK THIS GUY CAN REALLY BE EFFICIENT IF GIVEN TIME. GIVE ME A BREAK THE GUY ONLY PLAYED FIVE GAMES LAST YEAR ON THE WORST TEAM IN THE NFL. GROW A BRAIN!

THAT IS GOOD STUFF
In my eyes...It would really be ashamed if Bill didn't give JB a VERY fair shot at competing for a starting position.
How many times have we let a player go and they end up doing real well elsewhere...I would hate for that to happen. I have a feeling J.Chatman will be running well in N.Y.....

Another note..yeah Cam had issues..but if Ginn and Beck mature...07 Draft will end up way better than in many years.

Not to mention,
Lorenzo Booker, Sampson Satelle (man I gotta learn how to spell that), Reagon Mawai, & Brandon Fields.

Beck, Ginn, Satelle, Fields, and Mawai are already starters, (although that may change later). But still, I for one still thing this was a very good draft, ESPECIALLY if Beck turns into a stud & Quinn ends up a Dud (which I think he will. With the ego he carries around I'm surprised they could find a helmet big enough for him in Cleveland).

john beck is tim couch/ryan leaf
dude, u r still stuck in college.  tony sparano already stated that he wont go by the past.  john beck was 0-0 as far as college was concerned.  he was going to go by his videos of the 2007 season...he obvious showed that good college QB, but bad/awful/horrendous nfl QB.

Bad/awful/horrendous
Wow, but why? By everyone's account John Beck got little or NO instruction/playing time/training in 07 under CamRan. Do you possibly think that Tony Sparano and Company know that also? I'll bet you they do and John will be given every chance to win the QB's job. Do you honestly think that any QB coming out of college would do any better given the facts that we now know about the lack of training that John got?

No way is he anything like Couch/Leaf. Both of those guys came out way overrated and had only played two years of college ball with only one of those years being any good. Alex Smith is another QB that proves the point about not playing enough in college then going #1 and being a bust; the list goes on and on , by the way. The same WILL happen to Joe Flacco if they (whoever drafts him) starts him right away this year. All of these guys are one year wonders in my opinion. Sure we should draft a QB this year and next and the year after that also.

If John can't cut it this coming season then we go another route but to throw away the teams money by not seeing what John has is the wrong way to go; in my book.

Nice opinion.
Beck has not had a fair chance to show what he can do.  Of course we draft a QB this year, but you still play Beck and find out what you've got.

Mred is just crushin on Ryan.

Given Beck's age
What Cam did last year looks even more criminal. We basically lost a year with him, look at the arguing going on here, no one can make a firm conclusion on him (disregarding a few fanboys). I'd be much happier if we were saying "He had a poor rookie season after stepping in for Trent Green but this year will let us know for sure". Now we're in a spot where Beck is going to make or break his career this year with his first year being essentially useless for information given the coaching blunders and gaffes.

Agreed That What Cam Did to Him Was Bad
However, the one thing that is in total control of any QB, which is taking care of the football, Beck struggled with. That is probably why he was told to hit the weights hard and get bigger and stronger this offseason. As a QB you have to be able to hold onto the football, even when getting hit from behind.

Yep
I agree completely. I think it was nerves, not only was he a rook, but his line was terrible. David Martin wasn't even touching the guys he was assigned to block when Beck was in. It's something that must improve.

Should Have Posted this here.
Ron Jaworski Compares Matt Ryan to Carson Palmer:

http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/03/12/ron-jaworski-compares-boston-college-qb-matt-ryan-to-carso n-palm/

This page includes a video link.

Ok, a few people have sited the Jaworski review last year of Beck. Here is the same guy with his review of Matt Ryan. The thing I really like about this piece, and Jaworski in general, is that he always adds in the positives AND the negatives. He gives a truly balanced view IMO. I believe that of all of the talking heads, he and Mayock are the best.

It is hard for me to accept that comparison
because Carson Palmer was the undisputed, absolutely over the top #1 guy in the whole draft when he came out. Not to mention, head and shoulders above all the other QB's with the closest guy to him being Leftwich.

Meanwhile, Ryan is the top QB this year but everyone acknowledges it is a poor class. Moreover, nobody thinks Ryan is the best player in the draft (that would easily be McFadden).

Then when you compare the two guys, Palmer & Ryan and how can anyone begin to say Ryan has anywhere near the arm Palmer does? That's not exactly a trivial detail.

I used to think highly of Jawsz and his analysis, but through the years he's become less and less reliable. Just watch him on ESPN's weekly game and you'll see he says some rather trite and obvious things....

ie....3rd & 2 for a team trailing in the fourth quarter

Jawz says: this is a tough call for the coach.

Response: Gee thanks Jawz, here in the audience we just figured it got easier when the game was on the line. Thanks for enlightening us :)

Disappointed in Beck's rookie season
Yes, I'm another one of those BYU fans/Beck supporters that has recently began following the Dolphins because of John.  I just want to say a couple of things.

I was probably more disappointed in his rookie season than most of you.  He was a stud in college and in my opinion at that time, was better coming out of BYU than Steve Young was.  Most people place the blame on the coaching, but I'm not sure if that was it.  John just seemed to look like he did when he first started at BYU as a freshman.  To tell you the truth, I yelled at him constantly during his first two years at BYU.  He always overthrew his receivers and always rushed his decisionmaking.  He settled down for his last two years and was an absolute stud his Senior year.

So, why does that matter?  Well, I am betting that John just needed to fall on his face a couple of times (or in his case fumble) to gain some perspective and motivation.  I think he's got it now, and he'll drastically improve over the next two seasons.  It sounds like he's getting a lot more grooming from the coaching staff this off-season and he's working his tail off.

It's also interesting to note that Steve Young had a very similar rookie year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  Their offensive line was horrendous and Steve got sacked a billion times and he looked like a joke.  Hopefully the comparison will hold and John will turn out just as good as Steve was once the team around him improves. (Steve will always hold the edge over John on mobility though).

Very Insightfull Post
I'm hoping that John Beck turns out to be 80% of what Steve Young was in his prime. I think the comparison is a fair one too, as Young didn't get the chance to start again in SF until he was 30. The concern, at least for me, is that it is rare that a QB develops that late in their career. I'm sure Steve Young benefited greatly from having that great team around him too.

I think we'd all like to see Beck develop into a good, if not great QB. Even those of us that would like to draft Matt Ryan, which includes myself. However, realistically, I don't see the Phins drafting Ryan, so I'm REALLY hoping beck develops into that QB you speak of.
