The Phinsider Community Mock Draft: Pick #6 - New York Jets

With the fifth pick of The Phinsider Community Mock Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select Ryan Clady, OT, Boise State.

This was the closest vote yet, with Clady getting 30% of the vote and Glenn Dorsey getting 27%.  Vernon Gholston followed in 3rd with 12%.

So the draft now looks like this so far:

  1. Miami Dolphins - Chris Long, DE, Virginia (49%)
  2. St. Louis Rams - Jake Long, OT, Michigan (67%)
  3. Atlanta Falcons - Matt Ryan, QB, BC (68%)
  4. Oakland Raiders - Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas (47%)
  5. Kansas City Chiefs - Ryan Clady, OT, Boise St. (30%)
Up next is pick #6, which belongs to the NY Jets.  You can head over to NY Landing Strip if you want to get up to date insight on the Jets.  And below are the Jets' draft needs, according to NFL Draft Countdown:
1. Wide Receiver: After talking about it for a couple of years they finally "jettisoned" Justin McCareins so depth is needed. If he keeps complaining about his contract Laveranues Coles could be gone too.
2. Cornerback: Darrelle Revis looks like he's the real deal but Justin Miller seems like he has become a permanent fixture in the coaching staff's doghouse and there really is not a whole lot of depth either.
3. Safety: Kerry Rhodes has quietly emerged as one of the premier safeties in the league but Erik Coleman bolted as a free agent and they will need to find someone better than Abram Elam next to him.

Yes, I saw the list of 'primary' needs...
but I think the jets can't pass on Vernon Gholston. Thanks to their cross-town rivals (the Giants), the jets, like the rest of the NFL, know exactly what it takes to stop Brady & co in NE. And in short, that's big-time pressure.

The two most coveted positions in the NFL, IMO, are QB obviously but closely followed by pass rushers that can sack/harass/pressure QB's. The NFL is a pass first league and it follows that these two spots are key.

Which brings us nicely to Gholston. This kid has tremendous upside and talent. Yes he has not been the most consistent player. However remember this....you can coach up a kid on effort and work ethic, you cannot coach or create talent.

While CB is a need, this is a deeper class at that position I think, than it is in terms of elite pass rushers.

I pick Gholston.

i love your reasoning
and agree with the thought process, but think because dorsey is more rounded and can play inside where its harder to find really special players, that he will be the pick

I went with DRC
If I were the Jets I would be drooling over the chance to have a shut-down CB at either side. And in back to back years coming out of the draft- so those guys should be around for a while.

I can't argue with the chouce of Gholston either, Nat. I just think the chance to shore up the CB spot for years is too good to pass on-- what with the contracts that CBs are getting these days.. 7 years/ $70 mill on a guy that has attitude issues? In hindsight, I am glad the Fins didn't get in on that one.

The Jayfiss Report ...one fan's rants.

I went with McKelvin
I just don't think Gholston since they signed Pace... plus, the lucky Pats will get their grimey hands on Gholston...

Gholston
The Jets need to continue to change this team to a 3-4 defense. If McFadden was here I could see that but Vernon Gholston here makes the most sense. I understand they just signed Pace but nobody knows if he'll pan out.

Gholsten all hype
even the yets know this and he will faaaaaaall. Another OT in the top 10. Otah, he shouldn't and we wouldn't, but they will. Suckers

This draft gets silly
If you disagree with the premise that a guy like Clady would go that high, then this draft gets weird. But I guess it's fun to hear everyone's rationale.

we're talking the jets
so put me down for other and mal kelly wr oak...

the jets always have to do something to make their fans boo and the rest of us giggle like little school girls (kind of like what happened when miami drafted ginn last season or again when cam cam tried to explain the pick)...

the jets are playing for keeps this season and they need a wr????

heck it's not likely but I can't figure out what nut job pick the jets will make.
