**Phinsider Exclusive: A Chat with Dave Hyde (Part 2)**

Yesterday I posted the first part of my chat with the Sun-Sentinel's Dave Hyde.

Below is the second part of that interview.  This time, Dave shares his opinions on free agency, the draft, and Jason Taylor's future in Miami.

Matty: This new regime was really aggressive in free agency, but didn't go after the really big names that were out there.  What are your thoughts on what they did in free agency and who is the one player acquired in free agency that you think will make the greatest impact on this team?

Dave: Again, I like what they've done with the understanding that free agency won't make this team a success. This regime saw an older roster where there were no players from the 1998-2005 drafts. Basically, they went out and stocked the roster with guys from those drafts. Average players. But that's OK. You need average players. Especially in free agency, where you always overpay, overpaying for second-tier players seems smarter than WAY overpaying, for a headline player a la Joey Porter or what the Jets have done this off-season. They have plugged in some offensive and defensive players, but the most obvious work they've done in free agency is a complete overhaul of the special teams. Good thinking, too. They've got a good return guy in Ted Ginn Jr., and two good kickers (giving punting the benefit of mild doubt after one year). A problem last year is there were no special-team specialists. Again, it was a premeditated problem, as the last regime wanted to get younger -- needed to get younger -- and they hoped to find  some special team players to do so. Cam Worrell and Edmond Miles came through, but it turned out to be a bad special teams. This regime decided to get younger by buying free agents for special teams. That's really the one philosophical difference in the two regimes -- last year, they bought Joey Porter; this year, the sprinkled about that same money over a half-dozen players.

That said, the most important free agent is guard Justin Smiley: 1) He got the biggest contract, $25 million of which $9 million is guaranteed and 2) He fills one of the three open starting holes on the offensive line.

Matty: So what's the deal with the "Jason Taylor soap opera" that seems to be playing out in Miami?  Right now, it's clear that all parties involved are saying the right things to the media.  But when all is said and done, do you think Taylor will be a Miami Dolphin in 2008?

Dave: He wants out. The Dolphins would like to trade him. But it comes down to them getting the right price for him. I think he will be traded, though whether it's in the off-season or before the mid-season trading date is the unknown. Remember, in the past two years, Chris Chambers and Booger McFarland got second-round picks in mid-season. You'd think Taylor, even at 34,  would be worth at least that to a team making a run for a title considering his position is a premium one.

Matty: I know this front office is being very tight lipped when it comes to their draft plans.  But based on what you know, who do you think the Dolphins will take with the #1 pick (assuming they can't trade down)?

Dave: I don't know. I'd be surprised if it's Matt Ryan. I wouldn't be anymore if it's Glenn Dorsey. I'd be more surprised if it's Chris Long than Jake Long. I wouldn't be surprised if it's Vernon Gholston. The real problem is, once again, the Dolphins have a high draft pick in a year there's no value in having it. Remember: Ronnie Brown.

Matty: What positions and/or players do you think the Dolphins will target with their 2 2nd round picks?

Dave: Obviously, that depends on what they do with the first pick. If they don't use their first pick for Jake Long, they'll get an OT with the second pick. In fact, they need two tackles and a guard just to get through the season right now. So I wouldn't be surprised if they use two of the first three picks for offensive linemen.

Matty: Lastly, what late-round draft prospects do you think Dolphin fans should really get to know prior to April's draft?

Dave: That's beyond my knowledge. I've heard a couple names they've worked out that would be in the second-day, but I'm not even throwing them out there because I have no idea what they think after the workouts.

Again, we thank Dave for taking some time out to share his thoughts with us.

Also, tomorrow, I'll be posting one follow-up question that I asked Dave following the spirited debate that the first part of this little chat inspired about John Beck.  So check back for that.

And as always, thoughts below...

in reply to my own question
i'm pretty sure I'll be ticked off if they take anyone but j long at #1, but having said that I kind of like the upside to gholston more then c long.

I have jumped
on the J Long band waggon, after watching nfl live they made a few good points, o-line is our biggest need, we still have taylor and porter.  I have always been a supporter of c long, its going to be a long month!

Hey Matty...
Curious to know what you thought of Hyde's comment about Ronnie Brown and the lack of value in the 2005 draft at #2...

by KSB on Mar 20, 2008 8:43 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah
That kind of seemed like a cheap shot, then again he could be refering to his 32 Million guranteed.
salary, not alot of players are worth that much

The Top of the 2005 Was Weak...
...by comparison to previous years. Just look at the top 10 and see how many players have not distinguished themselves yet.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_NFL_Draft

I have also noticed over the last few years, of there being a lack of a consensus #1 guy at the top of the draft. I think the last player to fit that bill was Carson Palmer in the 2003 draft. Even with Palmer being the consensus #1 guy, there was still a lot of doubts about him being a franchise QB.

Every draft since then has lacked a consensus #1 pick. I believe that this will be the norm in the future. IMO, part of this is due to the media scrutiny that gets focused onto the player(s) that could possibly go at #1. Just look at what happened this year. Dorsey was the main guy seen going at #1 early on in the process. After heavy media scrutiny he's kind of drifted out of that picture. Now the spotlight is being shared by Chris Long, Jake Long, and Matt Ryan. Look at how Ryan is now being talked down in a lot of places.

I think he isn't saying anything...
...that we already don't know.  Only 1 player in the top 10 of that draft has been a pro-bowler.  As luck would have it, the Dolphins probably got the 2nd best player in that top 10 with Ronnie Brown.  But Dave's right.  In comparison to other years, the '05 draft wasn't a top-heavy draft.

exactly
he's more than qualified to give us his thoughts on any and all things Dolphins.

by Matty I on Mar 20, 2008 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd say...
that while Smiley got the most money, Ferguson and Starks are almost very key. Mainly because interior run defense was a huge problem last year. With Dorsey & Ellis available, if the dolphins pass on them because they feel Ferguson and Starks are the answer then it does put that decision on the spot.
If we pass on Dorsey/Ellis but are giving up 150 yards rushing/game (like last year) then people will definitely question our choices.

As far as Gholston, I don't think it would be nearly as big a bomb as that which cam-cam dropped on SoFla last year by passing on Quinn and taking Ginn. I mean Gholston is a top prospect, he's fast, he's quick, and he can get to the QB. The only question with him his consistency and work ethic. Long (Chris) is more consistent, more of a working guy, and productive too - but maybe doesn't have quite the same upside as Gholston.

The point Hyde makes about FA, overpaying, and getting the right kind of players was for me at least, the best thing he said in the whole interview. You just don't build a SB team via FA, it has to be from within.

OK,
They're NOT going to pick Matt or Jake and Glenn has lost ground too.  But between Chris and Vernon there's a leaning towards Vernon?  Hmmm.  I'm getting confused.  Which one dominates a game better?  Miami needs a 3-4 defensive linebacker type at #1.  Chris played it at Virginia.

Yeah, Vernon was good at the combine, and wow-ed the scouts and GM's, but so did Chris.  Chris is a perfect fit for Miami's dreadful defense, and seems like a Bill Parcells guy.  It doesn't exactly hurt that his father is Howie Long. Parcells is known for drafting players who are descendants of great players.

Then again, Vernon reminds some of us of the great (on the field) Lawrence Taylor -- Parcells monster 3-4 linebacker for the Giants.  Vernon's talent, strength, power and quickness -- the sky's the limit. I can see why others and Parcells being intrigued by this guy.

So here's my confused take.  Miami, with the #1 pick, needs to acquire a 3-4 linebacker.  Chris Long is the pick, just edging (like they say in horse racing) Gholston out by a nose.  Miami will
be able to grab anything they want -- a quarterback, nose tackle and right tackle later, but can they get a devastating sack-artist like Long or Gholston at selection No. 32?

I might be confused, but I wouldn't be disappointed if the Dolphins pick one or the other.  It's gonna be a long month.....

Go with vernon
With my pick i would go with vernon,But i dont think any of the players this year is good enough to go number 1 overall. So what i say do talk to all the players and let them now that and see wat player you can make a contract with before the draft and save some money with.If they talk to glenn dorsey and he says you can give him 20million guarntee and everybody else wants 30million who would you go with. But if i had to just pick anybody i would go with vernon cuz i realy think hes the next lawerance taylor........ with the 2nd rounders that we got and i say well probley get one more with the jason taylor trade. With the 32 pick i say pick the guy that was suppose to be in the 1st round but fell of.Like a kenny phillips from miami he keeps slipen lower and lower,When he was a top 10 pick at first.....  the other 2 we go ol and qb...........

I Think You're Right On!
Get the player that wants to sign NOW and for less than the 'out-of-this-world' guaranteed money, and it'll be a grand-stand pick and move.

If the team dilly-dallys (read dicks around) for a possible trade out of #1, then their gonna lose a ton of money up front paying the guarantee.

Of course, if the team gets Atlanta to trade, then they're right-on and right where they want to be.  Plus get a little for it.  I'm with Matty 1 on this.  Can't trade out of the top 5 for the record (read shellackin') we took last year.

And the Taylor trade will bring the team some good players or picks ---- or both.  Is it April yet!!??

Gholston
The thing that really trips me out about Gholston and Gholston -vs- C Long is that Vernon has only played football for three years. Isn't that really crazy? I mean like, freakish? C Long's dad is a pro-bowler and he probably played football since he was five in pee-wee. So what will Vernon do with a couple years of NFL coaching and playing if he already is kicking ass at Ohio State?
I wonder what you all think about this angle...

by phranchise on Mar 20, 2008 5:00 PM EDT reply actions

It means...
...Gholston may have more upside than Chris, but also more risky.

Is a risk/project worth the #1 pick?  That's the question we'll find out the answer to come draft day.
