Calvin Pace Update

Well we are all still wondering what the hell is going on with Calvin Pace is New York. The latest blurb about the situation comes from Rick Cimini of the Daily News:

The Jets could get a decision from Cards OLB Calvin Pace, who is in town for a visit. The Dolphins also are involved with Pace, creating a pupil-versus-teacher bidding war - Mike Tannenbaum vs. Bill Parcells. I'm hearing the Jets have an excellent chance to land him, with the guaranteed money approaching $20 million. That's sick money for a player with less than two seasons of starting experience. (I can hear the cynics, saying, "Big deal, they pay that much to rookies.") Pace (6-4, 272), drafted in the first round in 2003 as a defensive end, has started less than 1-1/2 seasons at linebacker, but the 3-4 teams are fawning over him.

So could the Jets now be the front runners for him? Maybe, especially when you consider Jason Taylor isn't going anywhere anymore according to Parcells.

What is clear, though, is that the Dolphins seem like they won't blow all their cash on Pace. If the Jets are offering $20 million in guaranteed money, then Pace will probably sign with the Jets. But we should find out more later today.

With Porter and Taylor still on the roster the Dolphins don't have to go into the deep end to land Pace. They also have that #1 pick, and can pick from a couple of studs in Chris Long and Vernon "Greg Lloyd" Gholston. Still, Pace is a scary dude and he'd be a welcome addition. This defense could be very good this year. If you think about it, all the problems this year were tied to a weak front that had little depth and lots of injuries.

Yeah, I wouldn't cry over this either.

The Jets are spending a ton of money. I'm not sure they're that close to the ring to be blowing so much cash on these guys. Stay young, find bargains, build from the inside out.

The Guarantee money is crazy and in a few years they will be right back where they are now. If they were 9-7, 10-6 I could understand this but..

Anyway, the JETS are in the same boat as the Phins - they are way more than 1 or 2 players away from being a contender.

What's interesting is the philosophy of the 2 teams this FA period. The JETS are breaking the bank to land 1 or 2 "stud" players whereas the Fins are bringing in a lot of good, young - mostly - talent and not breaking the bank on any one person.

If the JETS were a LB and a OT away from the Super Bowl, I would say great moves and watch out. But, we all know this is not the case so it makes one wonder about their philosophy.

With Porter and Taylor on the roster, still looking at other players, I agree with most folks here that Pace would be nice to have, but I wouldn't break the bank on him. If he chooses the JETS, we are still in pretty good shape.

The first year that Belichick was in New England he did something similar, signing something like 22 players in free agency. I agree: I'd rather sign lots of young starter caliber players and coach'em up than just a couple of big names. Though, I'm not an NFL GM.

Calvin Pace

Calvin Pace if signed by the Dolfins is a leading indicator of where the # 1 pick is used on. With Parcells noon ESPN statement through Chris Mortsen JT #99 is staying. I started laying Google Alerts for the Calvin Pace signing, Rick Crimini wiht the Daily News is the only one in NY and I mean the only one reporting that Calvin is leaning NY jets. Some are even questioning its legitimacy. A quote from Pace in NY everyone will know today (sunday)whom I've chosen Jets or Dolfins. Pace wants to play with Jason Taylor, so the noon release by Parcells makes sense and underscores it in the public forum. Playing with Taylor should make each a double digit sack season. Pace in turn would become a cornerstone on the Defense. Most draft boards would turn to Jake Long as the # 1 pick. In the past Month the # 1 consenus is Chris Long by a wide margin going to the Dolfins. I repeat a lot of NY jet jukies are skeptical of the Calvin Pace signing. Stefin

I'm still curious to see...

...what the new regime can do once they get their hands on Matt Roth, Quentin Moses, et al..

We've got some raw talent and good "motor" guys already in the fold. Don't underestimate what a new coaching staff can do with that.

The more interesting part to me is the secondary. There has been almost no significant movement in the secondary so far. With the FA market thin for DB's, I'm wondering if we'll see possibly two new guys for the secondary on draft day. Cromartie-Rogers (or vice versa) and Talib, anyone?

Possibly...

If Cromartie, Talib, or another top 5 DB is available at pick #32 I would strongly consider drafting one of them. Branden Albert (OG) or even a QB would also be high on my list, depending on what happens during the rest of free agency.

Agreed.

I like Moses and his potential. The signings of all these LBs seems to indicate they're going with Jake Long or Matt Ryan. I think the #32 pick would be a good spot to go after someone like Justin King to help out the secondary.

If not, I think they'll go C.Long/Gholston and then take someone like Carl Nicks or Sam Baker at #32 to get the LT we need.

Cromartie-Rogers sitting there for the taking with the 32nd pick...

There is talk he has moved into the late first round with his performances at the Senior Bowl and the Combine... #32 is essentially a late 1st Rd pick with NE losing their pick.. (Fingers crossed)

I really hope we see Jake Long come off #1, some DB's and a QB in the 2-4 RD's and then fill the depth charts across the board with the remaining picks. (Possibly find a sleeper)

This draft is so deep with OL that we can probably pick up some depth at the positions later in the draft. (Plus, don't forget Mormino who sat out last year with an injury, he'll add depth as well since he played decent in the pre-season.)

I'd forgotten about Mormino...

...and I'm glad you brought him up. Interesting tidbit: Justin Smiley is 6'3", 311 lbs. Drew Mormino is 6'3", 299 lbs. Shouldn't be too hard to bulk up a few pounds at this level...maybe Mormino fits that Parcells/Sparano mold of big maulers.

My guess is Pace will Play for us

The money is not that far off from what he wants. Pace knows with parcells history the Phins will be contenders in 3 years. The Jets are making some nice moves right now but there coaching situation is not secure. If Mangini has another bad year hes gone and what type of defense will the new coach bring in? The 3-4 is what's going to make him a star. I think hes trying to use the jets to get the money he wants from us. If we can be close to the Jets money he signs with us. If the money difference is big then we will see him twice a year and move on with our rebuilding process. My concern is more with JT. With Parcells statement I believe JT wants out like I posted in the other comment section.

If we do land Pace,..

As Nicholas mentioned above, it could mean the drafting of Matt Ryan, Or Jake Long. Usually, some teams try to build one side of the ball with fraa agency, while building the other through the draft. It seems as though this is what the front office is doing here. I feel very confident in their moves, whatever they may be, and think we have a legit shot to having a winning season next year.

I think 8-8, 9-7 is not out of the realm of possibility. What do you guys think?
