Dolphins sign kicker Rayner

Per the Sun-Sentinel:

The Dolphins continue their work to improve the special teams, signing kicker Dave Rayner to a one-year contract on Tuesday according to his agent.

Rayner, a former Michigan State standout who was selected by the Colts in the sixth-round of the 2005 draft, spent a portion of last season with the San Diego Chargers.

Rayner's strength is kickoffs, which also happens to be Jay Feely's weakness.  However, when all is said and done, I'd be shocked if Feely wasn't our kicker.  He's just too reliable on field goals to let go, hitting on 21 of 23 last year.

If nothing else, though, this puts every Dolphins player on notice.  Nobody's job can be considered safe.

Rayner averages....
...1.3 (one point three) yards more per kickoff than Feely. Is that really a strength against a weakness? Feely bests Rayner in every other measureable. I agree that Feely will remain our kicker.

Competition is Good
Thats what BP will do across the board. If Feely is good he keeps his job. Hang time is also very important on Kick offs. If Feely is 1.5 yd less but has better hang time then Feely is more valuable. God I cant wait for the fun to start.

Brandon Fields kicking off
The article mentions the fact that Fields may be the one doing the kicking off this year....

good to hear
now if they can get someone else to punt for him, miami might win the field position battle in a game for once.

so funny...
I clicked on the comments link because I was curious why there were six comments about a kicker...
On an EVEN lighter note, I was reading an article in the Boston Globe and saw a link about Patriot cheerleader tryout pictures...  don't think we have to worry about competition in this area

LET'S NOT UNDERESTIMATE...
...the significance of a backup place kicker.  This guy could be the piece of the puzzle that puts us in the BIG SHOW next year!!!

damn Cam
it's good to have you back. I didn't think you still be on the dolphin boards since you got axed last year, but I like your focus...
