Dolphins sign Keith Davis

Well the Dolphins have finally begun their secondary improvements, reaching a deal with Keith Davis, according to the Sun-Sentinel:

The Miami Dolphins continued raiding Dallas Cowboys personnel on Tuesday by agreeing to terms with free agent safety Keith Davis, according to a source.

Davis, 29, will not only shore up a thin secondary and compete with recently re-signed strong safety Yeremiah Bell, Renaldo Hill and Jason Allen for a starting spot, but he will also bolster the special teams coverage units, a major weakness last season. Hill is still recovering from season-ending knee surgery.

Davis has 22 games of starting experience from Dallas. However, he's a far better run supporter than coverage safety, which is why Dallas eventually decided to go a different route next to Roy Williams (who can't cover anyone).

He is a terrific special teams player, though, and will surely excel in that role. He'll be interesting to watch, though, as he battles the likes of Yeremiah Bell for the starting strong safety position. One thing I'd expect is for Cameron Worrell to have a much tougher time making the team. Basically, Davis is a better version of Worrell. But we'll see what happens come training camp.

One interesting thing about Davis is that he has something in common with current Dolphin Joey Porter. Both have been shot:

Davis, a Texas native, has a strange history of getting shot. He missed the entire 2003 season after suffering a gunshot wound to his hip and elbow while waiting to pick up a friend at a topless club. Then-Cowboys coach Bill Parcells released Davis, but re-signed him a year later after he excelled during a stint with the Berlin Thunder of the now defunct NFL Europe league.

Davis was also shot in the head and thigh while driving down a Dallas highway in July 2006 as he was returning from a family vacation. The police described it as an attempted carjacking. None of the wounds were considered serious.

So let's just hope Davis can make it to camp this year without having to dodge any bullets.

Update [2008-3-11 17:15:47 by Matty I]: The official site points out that Davis signed a 2 year deal. Still unsure of the money, though.

I like the signing...Especially for special teams
We need all the help we can get now only on kickoff coverage, but also for our kick/punt return team. We  would have seen more TGinn returns for TD if our time had better players, and this helps.

Capped
I don't see the big deal - I get shot all the time. It builds character! LOL

Finally
A little depth and competition at safety.  Hopefully we'll get a draft pick at this position as well.

Oh I don't know...
I seem to know a lot of people who if they happened to be shot in the head, there's no doubt it would be a MINOR wound.   LOL

At least we don't have to worry...
about him getting concussions.

Decision making
I dont undertsand why NFL players don't make better decisions.
You could say its a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but over and over?

Davis better set himself straight or his stay in Miami will be a very short one

If getting shot
a 2nd time doesnt set you straight....Nothing will. I think we have the players on special teams to have one of the best in the game. Add to what we picked up already,a couple of LB, we will most likely draft or sign as undrafted FA and we will be set. I love watching a team being built.

Shot twice?
Finally, we have a Soldier on the team!  Do we play the Browns this year?

solid additon
i think this is a solid additon to our special teams. seems like a good toough guy that shud add some depth to the injury-prone safety core we have.

the only thing im scared about is last season all over again. cam cameron signed almost every FA that was even remotely related to his team, the chargers. now bill parcells is doing the same thing but this time hes including players AND coaches. dejavu? hope not.

John Beck + Lorenzo Booker + Ted Ginn Jr= SUPERBOWL IS NEAR!

Of course one difference to consider is
that Bill has a track record that probably indicates that he has a good idea what he is doing...

Cam had NO idea what he was doing...
