Dolphins to "part ways" with Jason Taylor...or not

Update [2008-3-2 11:57:45 by Matty I]: ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Bill Parcells has told him that Jason Taylor "will be playing for Miami in 2008 unless he chooses to retire." This contradicts Jason Cole's report below. Parcells says of the report by Cole, "This latest report is just another example of journalistic irresponsibility."

Maybe Bill is right. Or maybe Bill didn't want teams to know that Taylor won't be back because potential trade partners might be inclined to offer less knowing Taylor isn't a wanted guy in Miami. Either way, take all this with a grain of salt and wait to see how it all plays out. [end update]

Yahoo's Jason Cole is reporting that the Dolphins and Jason Taylor will part ways between now and April's draft:

Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor has already moved away from South Florida. The only thing left is to figure out his next address.

Three sources close to the Dolphins organization said this week that Taylor and the team he has been part of for 11 years have graciously agreed to part ways between now and the NFL draft April 26. There's no animosity between Taylor and new Dolphins guru Bill Parcells or coach Tony Sparano.

There are just plans that each side has. Those plans don't include each other.

The one rumor making rounds all over the internet is that the Packers are willing to give Miami a 2nd round pick and a 4th round pick for Taylor.  Another rumor is that the Vikings are offering their 2nd round pick and 3rd round pick.

So I leave the floor open to you all: what would you NEED to get in return in order to part with Jason Taylor?

Figured it was coming
With all these defensive free agents and letting Zack go I knew Jason would probably be gone. I'd like to see Jason and Zack get rings before they retire. As far as draft picks I think either one is a good offer. From a business standpoint the Vikings offer would obviously be best, however I would rather see Jason go to the Packers than the Vikings since they have a better chance of getting to the SB.

ok let me see if I have this
straight....

The day after the dolphins trade for a 33 year old NT with questionalbe charachter, who missed most of last season, they are going to trade away a 33 year old DE who is 1 season removed from being defensive player of the year and is the current 'man of the year'....

ok now that i've had 3 or 4 drinks it makes perfect sense to me!

Dance
Jason loves everything Hollywood. He wants to act, He held his own last year as a guess NFL Annalyst. Dancing with the Stars. Is this Jasons 'plan'? Where does he live now? arrrrgh.

Good move
Any Dolphin fan will obviously be sad to see JT go.  Nevertheless, he deserves a shot to play for a winner.  He will be past his prime by the time the Dolphins can contend so it makes perfect sense to load up on draft picks. Also, it gives us Phin fans some NFC teams (Zach and the Cowboys) to root for while the fins rebuild.

Sadly....
It would be best for JT and the Dolphins. We're still a few years away and JT won't be here for that. For both our sake and his we should get some picks in return for him to play for a winner. Especially if we can land Pace and keep Porter around, it wouldn't be the end of the world.

The Writing
was on the wall.  You could feel the posturing, the moves, hear the rumors, etc.  So not really a surprise when it comes to pass.

I think there may be two ways of handling it -- do and take what the organization wants, OR since there's two suitors, let Jason pick which team he'd like to go to and take those picks.

The only thing that looms heavy is that it is IMPERATIVE that the team get Calvin Pace to replace the outside rusher position.

Nothing lasts for ever........

Writing was on the wall...
As sad as it is to say it, this is something that needed to happen.

We need to rebuild this team folks and he is the one person we still have that can help bring us more picks/youth.

A year from now he is another year older and becomes less valuable.  Might as well get what you can for him.  Plus, he doesn't really fit into a 3-4 scheme.....

I think the class thing to do is let Jason decide where he wants to play and go with that deal. (Both are about the same from what I have heard...)  Least we can do for him.

This team won't get any younger by keeping the vets around here, especially the ones who can bring us something in return.

Definition of Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results...

Question
Does this mean we are drafting Chris Long (DE/OLB) with our #1 pick?

I believe it does...

by NumberOneFan on Mar 1, 2008 9:45 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

J Long still #1
I believe we need an OT more than any other position right now, even if we don't get Pace. So J. Long could still very well be our #1 pick.

by kcorona4 on Mar 1, 2008 9:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Depends....
If Pace gets signed then I think it's clear that M.Ryan or J.Long would be the man. With Starks and Ferguson, I think we can scratch Dorsey off the list. After the combine that Gholston had, I don't think it would be absurd to consider him as well.

At least a 2 nd & 3rd
for JT.  Be nice if an early 3rd or 4th in 09 was added as well.

two picks in
this years draft I would take. I will miss JT but its time to start a new for both of us. I like what we have done so far. Brought in a lot of competition if we have a good draft this year and next we will be competing for the super bowl in 3 years. So far I think the Browns have the best FA pickups this year. They got much better if they get a upgrade at OLB look out Pitt.

Chris Long
He is our new JT or Zach. He has the whole package, the new face of Dolphins D... Still plenty of time for more moves to be made though.

I'd go for either of these trades.
As I said in the diary on this subject.  Either one gives this team what it most needs: more high-value picks.

It's a crying shame...
...from a sentimental standpoint, but it's also the right thing to do.  I actually feel bad for Taylor.  Going to Green Bay (frozen hard turf and bitter cold during the last third of the season) or Minnesota (very hard playing surface) is going to shorten his career.  He's such a physical freak that staying in a nice climate and on a forgiving turf probably would have kept him around for another five years, barring injury.  But moving to either of these teams is going to shorten his career...I'd bet three years, tops, and they'll probably be injury-plagued years at that.

I still haven't gotten over Csonka, Kiick, and Warfield in '74, or Jake Scott being traded to the Redskins for a 7th round pick.  Apparently, Jake Scott has never gotten over it either.

Such is the business of the game.  Make the trade with Minnesota for the higher picks and let the rebuilding continue...onward and upward.

Go Dolphins.

I just thought of something stupid...
Jerry Jones said something about surprises in the draft or something like that when he was asked about McFadden... maybe I'm just tired, but could JT go play with Zach in some kind of big big deal?
ahhh nevermind, that's crazy talk...

i would love
two first rounders really- one this year and next. a second and a third in this years draft would be okay..

and love that jason cole thinks the fins can grab a first rounder.. yeah, that's not gonna happen..

i wish JT the best and yes, this is right the thing to do.

It just sucks
I'm all for a full-fledged rebuilding movement and not the patchwork kind that has proven to be worthless the last few seasons.

But I felt like they could have gotten away with getting rid of anyone, but not "our" JT. He was my fall back guy. I could absorb them dumping guys, even Zach for that matter, if it meant they were doing something for the greater good. This very well might be the same thing, but I figured that Jason Taylor would have been the one player who would have survived the purge.

This doesn't change my opinion that this new crew deserves a chance to prove themselves. But this one cuts deep. It really does.

I try to write specifically as a fan of the Dolphins, a fan of "the laundry" for that matter, but I've also been blessed to be able to be able to see this man play for the last many years. His level of effort was selmon equaled by the management and coaching staff around him, but that's neither here nor there. It never was to Jason either. He showed up, left it all on the field, and was able to walk away from each and every game in good conscience, knowing he gave his best.

JT
is an all-time Dolphin great, not to mention he's had a superb career in the NFL.

All that said, this move (assuming it happens), is not hard to understand. The fins have almost zero chance of being a playoff contender next year, and potentially the year after (i'm going with the typical 3 year plan here).

What point does it serve for a player of JT's caliber, who is still highly regarded, to play out his days and retire 2 years from now on a 7 or 8 win team?

If you can get the picks people are saying we can get for him, then make the move. JT will play on a contender ideally, and we'll get a 2nd rounder plus another pick to help us be a real playoff team say 3 years from now.

Just as with Zach, this is business guys, nothing personal. THey are professionals, both JT plus Parcells & Co. It makes sense for all involved.

I just saw the same on ESPN's bottom ticker.  Parcell's had spoken to Mortensen saying it...

I have a feeling Pace will sign with the team, AND we'll have two wins next year courtesy of the New York Jets..... heh, heh, heh.

Already Moved Away
If Taylor stays, Jason Coles at Yahoo was very irresponsible. The comment about him having already moved away is true, he's staying in LA while filming "Dancing With The Stars." That doesn't mean he can't find a weight room out there and isn't planning on returning. I think Coles got some cheap heat off of going out on a limb making a guess.

Or, maybe I just don't want it to happen and will find any way to explain it otherwise.

I Love the Internet...
..and its wealth of info that can be found. Unfortunately, many websites/blogs cross the line from reporting the news to trying to make the news. You see many examples of this, including the Jason Cole report, and now on profootballtak.com too. He speculates that Jason Taylor does not want to be back. No actual news, just personal speculation. At some point, people need to stop reporting their speculation as news.

Just my 2 cents. :)

Bill walks the walk?
But can he talk the talk? We will find out soon. I went to sleep last night thinking Jason Taylor lives a little more than an hour and a half away from me and I would never see him play for our Dolphins again. Then this morning I see this ''Parcells said that Taylor will be playing for the Dolphins in 2008 unless he chooses to retire.'' :O
This states JT will not be traded or be let go!
So, Now we will see just how Bill (POFO) operates. If this is true and Jt plays or retires then we can trust what Bill says.

by Spacefish on Mar 2, 2008 1:28 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

This sounds like
Bill wants Taylor to stand up and be OLB and Taylor would rather play for a contender and be DE in the 4-3 def. The reason I say this is Bill said those exact words to Ellis when he wanted out instead of moving to a new position. You either play here or retire. Ellis moved to OLB and loved it then winned about more money. So the reporter probably got it right. Jason agent probably told the reporter that jason moved. Bill very rarely responds to a rumor unless he talking thru the press to one of his players. This aint good guys my guess is Jason wants out.

Until I Hear It from the Horses Mouth...
...meaning Jason Taylor, I'm going with the 'its pure conjecture' theory by Jason Cole.

by dab415217 on Mar 2, 2008 5:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I've read...
a variety of quality articles and sources online who all state that they consider Cole (the original story writer) as being highly regarded and with integrity.

My theory is that word got out that a trade was in the works. Cole got word of it and obviously reported it. Parcells certainly can't be happy that what he wanted kept under wraps was made public. Then again, maybe it is a way to up the price for JT by making it seem that he's unavailable. Remember, you have no leverage as a GM when you openly say a guy is going to be traded.

I still have a hard time imagining Parcells being cool with his team captain and veteran leader, moonlighting on TV, etc.

by Natalya on Mar 2, 2008 11:35 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Parcells-Is he the answer?
I don't have any confidence in Parcells.  He had a great career but I think his time has come and gone.  He doesn't have the fire in him anymore.  He took this job because he has a house in Jupiter. He will be gone in 1 year.
