Free Agency/Trade Rumors - Part II

Just like I did last night, this thread will stay continually updated throughout the day, at least until tonight, with all the latest news/rumors:

4:37 pm: So that's it for me today in terms of these kinds of updates. After all, it is Friday night. So here's the deal. If the Dolphins sign anybody (hopefully Calvin Pace), I'll try to post it. But I'll also need all your help. Feel free to post a diary that includes a link if the Dolphins reportedly sign someone. But, please, no more than one per player signed. Also, don't copy and paste the whole article into the diary post. The mainstream media doesn't like that much. Thanks!

4:32 pm: The Washington Post is reporting that the Dolphins are showing a lot of interest in OL Jason Fabini. He's a Parcells favorite and a guy who can play guard or tackle, though likely in a reserve role at this point in his career.

4:02 pm: Adam Schefter is reporting that Justin Smith is also visiting Miami today. No link for this one, as it's on the bottom ticker on NFL Network.

3:45 pm: The Sun-Sentinel tells us that what is slowing down negotiations with Calvin Pace is that his agent is seeking "Joey Porter money," which is $20 million in guarantees.

3:38 pm: The Miami Herald reports that Texans' LB Charlie Anderson is in Miami for a visit. Anderson played strong-side LB in Houston, but Rotoworld believes he could be a candidate to kick inside in a 3-4.

2:50 pm: Dolphins sign two more. They've come to terms with Ernest Wilford and Randy Starks. More to come in a new post...

2:33 pm: A couple of Dolphin nuggets from Adam Schefter:

The Dolphins signed former Jets free-agent tight end Sean Ryan to a one-year deal and were expecting visits from Arizona linebacker Calvin Pace, Oakland quarterback Josh McCown and Tennessee defensive tackle Randy Starks. Talks with Starks, for one, are heating up.

2:15 pm: The Sun-Sentinel offers up this little nugget:

The Dolphins are also trying to iron out deals with Cardinals 6-5, 270-pound linebacker Calvin Pace, who is in town, along with Jaguars free-agent receiver Ernest Wilford and Titans defensive tackle Randy Starks, according to sources.

2:00 pm: There's a post on FinHeaven's message board by one of their users, Boomer, who is reporting that Titans' free agent DT Randy Starks will be signing with the Dolphins soon. Here's the link to the thread by Boomer. More on this if it becomes offical (or if it gets mentioned by another media outlet. However, Boomer is a very well known and respected Dolphin fan and a reliable source of info.

Thanks to Phintastical One for e-mailing me this.

12:41 pm: The Dolphins are busy! They've signed LB Reggie Torbor, according to The Bergen Record. More on this one to come...

12:34 pm: AMEN!! Alex Marvez is reporting that the Jaguars signed Cleo Lemon to a 3 year deal worth $8.1 million. It's amazing that a team would sign a scrub like Lemon to a deal worth $8.1 million when he has just one more career NFL win than you and I do. But thank goodness he's out of Miami! Good riddance!!

12:20 pm: Jason Ferguson is a Miami Dolphin. The Cowboys and Dolphins have agreed on a deal sending to Miami the massive NT. More on this coming...

12:08 pm: Wow. Did anyone see how much money the Jets are giving Kris Jenkins. Adam Schefter is reporting that it's a 5 year, $35 million deal with $20 million in guarantees. The Jets also had to give up 2 mid-round picks to get him. That's a HUGE investment.

11:37 am: The Palm Beach Post reports that the Dolphins have offered Patrick Cobbs, an exclusive rights free agent, a $445,000 tender offer to remain in Miami next year. Also, the Post reports the Dolphins are indeed interested in Marques Douglas, but nothing is "imminent."

11:32 am: NFL Network is reporting that the Dolphins have signed TE Sean Ryan. Ryan is 4 years into the league, spending his first 2 in Dallas and his 2 most recent in New York with the Jets. He's got good size, at 6'5, 265, but is limited in experience. He has just 9 career catches for 90 yards, but is only 27 years old. He's also a better blocking tight end than receiving, something the Dolphins have lacked. They thought Justin Peelle would be a solid blocker, but struggled last year in that regard.

Another hat tip to finguy23 for pointing out this tidbit as well.

11:25 am: Here's an interesting thought to consider as we await any news on Calvin Pace (or any other free agent) courtesy of PFT and it's in reference to the Dolphins "breaking the bank" on Pace:

Such a move would immediately call into question Porter’s future with the team. He’s due to earn a base salary of $4.8 million in 2008.

It also might prompt 2006 NFL defensive player of the year Jason Taylor to blow his stack. There were rumblings a year ago that Taylor was not pleased that he didn’t get an adjustment after Porter received his windfall. If the Fins do it again, that might be the last straw for Taylor.

A hat tip to finguy23 for pointing out this tidbit below in the "comments" section.

10:28 am: PFT is reporting that Derek Anderson has signed a long-term extension with the Browns, according to Adam Schefter. Anderson will receive over $14 million in guaranteed money. This is great news, as now these rumors of Miami giving up anything to get Anderson will finally end.

10:22 am: According to the Miami Herald, the Dolphins had $39.5 million in cap space. And this is following the signings of guys like Greg Camarillo, Michael Lehan, and David Kircus. So following the Smiley signing, we can assume the Dolphins have between $32 million and $34 million left, depending on how his deal is structured. Also, if the Jason Ferguson deal does go through, that's another $4 million on the books.

10:14 am: ProFootballTalk is reporting that Todd Collins has re-signed with the Redskins, according to a league source. As I said below, McCown is coming to Miami today for a visit and it'll be interesting to see what comes of it, as veteran signal callers will be coming off the board quickly.

10:11 am: Alex Marvez is reporting that the Dolphins are ready "preparing to offer Calvin Pace the same kind of mega-deal that Adalius Thomas and Joey Porter received in free agency last offseason."  If the Dolphins have it their way, Pace will not leave South Florida when he comes to visit today.  Pace, along with QB Josh McCown, are two confirmed visits, according to the Miami Herald.

Quinn May now want out of Cleveland!
His big $ is tied to performance which if he does not see playing time he won't get!
We are running low on QB options....McCown & Volcheck are back-ups at best...Hope Beck steps up.....I think he can!
This league lacks quality QB's & the draft this year has a couple possibilities (at best) & 2009 drops off!

FA visits?
Anyone here about any potential visits to Miami for Max Starks, Jacob Bell or any other top offensive lineman?  Any word on bringing in a top DT for a visit?

by JohnDolphin73 on Feb 29, 2008 10:58 AM EST reply actions

Ferguson from the Cowboys in a trade
The word is that we are in the late stages of working a trade with Dallas for DT J. Ferguson.
He is not the best guy, but he is probably good enough that,  if we got him, we would not draft to that position with an early pick.

Good article:
Dolphins only starting to rework line

February 29, 2008 10:42 AM

Posted by ESPN.com's Mike Sando

The Dolphins wasted little time in addressing their offensive line, no surprise for a team whose new head coach, Tony Sparano, coached the position in Dallas.

The expected addition of Justin Smiley from the 49ers is one step in what figures to be an overhaul for the Dolphins up front. The team also declined to offer a restricted free-agent tender to Cory Lekkerkerker, who started two games in 2007.

Adding Smiley gives Miami only seven offensive linemen under contract (teams generally keep between eight and 10):

I've sorted the chart in descending order of 2007 starts. Smiley is expected to start at right guard. Vernon Carey could move from left tackle to right tackle if the Dolphins use the draft to find a better option on the left side. Samson Satele is the center. Right guard appears wide open. The former starter there, Rex Hadnot, is reportedly visiting Houston.

It also has a chart, which is really interesting, but I can't post it, but here's the link:

Also, PFT added the following to the Pace report:
"Such a move would immediately call into question Porter's future with the team.  He's due to earn a base salary of $4.8 million in 2008.

It also might prompt 2006 NFL defensive player of the year Jason Taylor to blow his stack.  There were rumblings a year ago that Taylor was not pleased that he didn't get an adjustment after Porter received his windfall.  If the Fins do it again, that might be the last straw for Taylor."

Interesting times ahead fellow Fish-fans!!

If anyone is gone
because of the Pace signing (if he signs) it will more than likely be J.T.  He can fetch more from a trade and wouldn't hurt our cap as much.  Porter can still be productive if used correctly.  Hopefully Pasqualoni does a better job than Capers did last year.  Not the J.T. wouldn't be productive but he would yield more value in return so he's the odd man out.  Unless, of course, Pace or Porter can shift inside.  Then J.T. could hang around if the front office wants him.

TE
Who is available for us to pick up at Tight End?  I would love for us to get Ben Troupe.  I think he could be a very productive TE in a system like we are gonna have.  But who else in Free Agency is there?  I would love for us to draft Chris Brown out of Tennessee too... he is very versatile, and brings the capability of a big play every time, a la Jason Witten...

by JDPhinFan on Feb 29, 2008 11:20 AM EST reply actions

Other TEs available are
Alge Crumpler, Eric Johnson, and Jerramy Stevens.  I'd love to grab Crumpler.  He could do wonders for Beck or whoever is at QB.  But I don't see Parcells going after any of these guys.  I think Parcells will look at a TE in round 3 maybe with the 2nd pick in round 2.  I think they should look hard at Martellus Bennet and Jermichael Finley.

Finley
Is he the guy from Oklahoma?
~~ FINGUY23 ~~

by JDPhinFan on Feb 29, 2008 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

Ne he is from
Texas.  He was a redshirt sophomore this season.  Here is his ESPN Insider scouring report:

"Strengths: Has good top-end speed, does a nice job of exploiting seams between safeties and linebackers and can stretch the field. Tracks the ball well, has excellent body control and flashes the ability to make the spectacular catch. Times jumps well, fights for the ball while it's in the air and excels in jump-ball situations. Uses body to shield defenders from the ball and flashes the ability to make touch catches in traffic. Shows good awareness and does a nice job of staying in bounds when running routes along the back of the end zone. Changes directions well and has the burst to develop into a crisp short-to-intermediate route-runner. Has big hands and doesn't drop many passes should catch. Flashes the ability to make the first defender miss, flashes the ability to pick up yards after contact and is capable of producing after the catch. Keeps head up and uses downfield blockers. Takes sound angles to assignments and can get into position at the second level.

Weaknesses: Gets adequate hand placement but fails to deliver a violent initial punch and isn't going to knock many defenders back at the point of attack. Plays with a mean streak and flashes the ability to sustain blocks hasn't shown great lower body strength and struggles to drive defenders off the ball. Undersized and is going to have problems anchoring when asked to help out in pass protection. Rounds too many cuts off and isn't a fundamentally sound route runner at this point. Lacks ideal starting experience and is still somewhat raw.

Overall: Finley redshirted his first year at Texas (2005). In 2006, he appeared in all 13 games (including four starts when the Longhorns opened in a two-tight end set), posting 31 receptions for 372 receiving yards (12.0 average) and three touchdowns. In 2007, he started all 13 games and finished the season with 45 receptions for 575 receiving yards and two touchdowns.Finley is a fairly one-dimensional pass-catching tight end at this point but he has enormous potential. He has the speed and athletic ability to develop into a big-play receiver and the frame to develop into an adequate blocker in space as an H-back type. As a result, Finley projects as a late-second or third round pick."

Finley is rated the 3rd best TE in the 2008 class by Scouts, Inc behind only Fred Davis (USC) and John Carlson (Notre Dame).  The Finley you're thinking of is Joe Jon Finley.  He is from Oklahoma and is the 12th ranked TE by Scouts, Inc.  Martellus Bennett is from Texas A&M and is ranked 5th by Scouts, Inc.

Hmmm...
hadn't heard of him, but I liked the TE from Oklahoma...

Ernest Wilford Update
Per Rotoworld:

"Ernest Wilford's two biggest suitors appear to be the Dolphins and the Bills.
The Bills are looking for a big and physical receiver to line up opposite Lee Evans, and the Dolphins likely want the same for Ted Ginn."

Bring him on down, and tell him to bring Bryant Johnson too :)

I think Crumpler is still out there.
That is a position where a stop gap guy might make sense, as we groom a younger guy we grab in the draft.

Gibril Wilson update
Someone familiar with the situation tells Newsday that free agent S Gibril Wilson is expected to sign a deal with the Raiders.

The deal would be for $6-6.5 million a year, more than he was initially said to be seeking. It looks like Oakland will keep Michael Huff at strong safety in 2008, rather than move him to his more natural spot on the weak side.

Dolphins get Jason Ferguson.
For basically two sixth round picks (swap 6th this year with the Cowboys.)

Reported by ProFootballTalk.com and the Dallas Morning News.

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/stories/030108dnspocowboyslede.b88ce40.html

by Grig on Feb 29, 2008 12:21 PM EST reply actions

We basically trade a late round 5th
for a 6th.  And then give them our 6th next year.  So we are actually only giving up one pick, a 6th next year.

Pretty nice deal!

by LeftCoastFinFan on Feb 29, 2008 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

Phew!!! I was getting worried!
Now we have filled in DT, OG, WR, OLB/DE, and TE....!!!

How cool is this FA period already!

Still need: QB, OT, CB, S. (would like to see us get someone in FA to fill these holes prior to the draft).

Still want: another OG and WR. (These are not in the need category because they can likely be filled in later, through the draft in later first day picks).

With Lemon gone to the Jags
maybe we'll grab their former backup, Quinn Gray.  He'd be an interesting veteran presence.

by JMFlyer1454 on Feb 29, 2008 12:41 PM EST reply actions

Agree...
with Lemon signing, you can almost guarantee Quinn Gray is gone from Jax.

I'd still prefer someone proven like Frerotte or Collins, though I heard Collins has signed with Wash.

by Natalya on Feb 29, 2008 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah
Collins is back in Washington.  I'd take Gray, Frerotte, or Volek.  Maybe McCown.

by JMFlyer1454 on Feb 29, 2008 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

I'd be fine with...
Josh McCown. He's a good team guy who I think knows his NFL career is more along the lines of a backup than starter.

"They've signed LB Reggie Torbor, "

And I was just thinking of how this day falls on the scale of what days are most inefficient in economic terms for US business, outside the NFL of course. Fortunately, I work a little later in the evening, but I do imagine a few bossed being rather pissed off (then again, they may be doing the same as the rest of us).

by KSB on Feb 29, 2008 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

I'm assuming
Torbor is going to challenge for the other ILB position next to Crowder.  He is big (6-2, 250) and relatively young at 27.  KEEP THE PACE UP GUYS!!!  Love it.

he'll bring some more beef as well as veteran leadership to the Oline.

He would
but didn't Dallas make no effort to resign him when Parcells was still the coach?  His last year in Dallas was 2005.  Parcells stuck around through '06.

The latest on Faneca
Here's where the Jets stand. They've made their offer (reportedly 4 years for $32 million with about $20 in guarantees) and now they will wait. According to Faneca's agent, Rick Smith, he's currently compiling the offers from several organizations (the Rams and 49ers highest among them) and will present the information to Faneca on Saturday. Either Saturday afternoon, but no later than Sunday, Smith said, Faneca will make his decision. On Sunday he is expected to board a plane for one of the destinations and sign the contract tat will likely make him the best-paid offensive lineman in the sport.

"One plane, one visit," Smith said of the weekend's no-nonsense decision-making.

As for the Jets offer, Smith said everybody's is in the same neighborhood but that Faneca's decision won't be all about the bucks. The city, the team, the coaching staff, that will all play into it.

So basically, don't stay up tonight waiting for Alan Faneca news because according to his agent, it ain't coming until at least Saturday afternoon or evening.

http://blogs.trb.com/sports/football/jets/blog/2008/02/the_latest_on_faneca.html

I hope the Dolphins at least have an offer in.  Sounds like he would take a bit less money to play for the right guy in the right place.

by LeftCoastFinFan on Feb 29, 2008 2:07 PM EST reply actions

So it is possible
that on the first day on free agency we could sign RG Justin Smiley, LB Reggie Torbor, TE Sean Ryan, OLB Calvin Pace, DT/DE Randy Starks, WR Ernest Wilford, and QB Josh McCown plus trading for NT Jason Fergsuon?  WOW.

Just hope they go after Jacob Bell and Maurice Williams too!

by JMFlyer1454 on Feb 29, 2008 2:38 PM EST reply actions

Randy Starks, Antwan Odom, and Jacob Bell
The Titans negotiated with several of their unrestricted free agents up until the final hours, but at 11:01 p.m. Thursday the team lost exclusive bargaining power with all 12 of them.

Defensive end Antwan Odom, coming off a career-best, eight-sack season, was likely to get the most attention of the bunch as the NFL's free agency period got under way. Guard Jacob Bell and defensive end Travis LaBoy were also expected to have multiple suitors.

http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080229/SPORTS01/802290401

Starks was buried on the depth chart last year behind T. Brown and A. Haynesworth (technically listed as Haynesworth's backup).

I LOVE the Wilford signing!!
With a solid O-line, a blocking TE, a running game, and two big WRs, Ginn might actually get a chance to go deep this year!

:)

by LeftCoastFinFan on Feb 29, 2008 2:56 PM EST reply actions

I dunno why...
everyone likes the Wilford signing. He looked like nothing but a scrub in Jacksonville, I don't know what you guys are talking about.

by YatilGinnJr on Feb 29, 2008 3:02 PM EST reply actions

I don't think he looked like a scrub...
...he made some big plays.  He rarely ever drops the ball.  I think that looking at his numbers, Wilford isn't impressive.  But he played on a team that:
  1. can't seem to develop WRs...ever
  2. was a run-oriented team
  3. has had inconsistent WR play in his career
Ideally, he'd make a very good 3rd WR.  But for this team, he's an upgrade over Derek Hagan and is an OK fit to start opposite Ted Ginn if he had to, though I'd love to see another WR brought in (and not a camp fodder...a real WR)

by Matty I on Feb 29, 2008 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

oops
above, #3 should read "inconsistent QB play"

by Matty I on Feb 29, 2008 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

I think Wilford...
can't do any worse than Hagan or Marty Booker, and has the potential to be better than either while costing much less than Booker.

by Natalya on Feb 29, 2008 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

agreed....
but I was hoping for someone more exciting than Wilford and Kircus. Hopefully we'll draft someone with some promise.. maybe that kid outta Michigan State that impressed in the combine.

by YatilGinnJr on Feb 29, 2008 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

We are not done with the WRs yet...
There are a bunch of potentially good ones in the draft, but most of them are kinda raw...they'll need time to develop.

But the biggest thing Wilford does is make a team pick it's poison on 3rd and reasonable.... do they play the run, play the big posession guy at the marker, or cover against Ginn running deep in the secondary.

This drastically helps the QB play, and the running game.  Kinda like a good pass catching TE.

And think about what he can do against small DBs in the end zone!  :)

I love it!

Holy Crap! these guys are BUSY!
The are running circles around what RanCam did last year!!!!

by LeftCoastFinFan on Feb 29, 2008 3:44 PM EST reply actions

Wilford....
Will be to Miami what Oronde Gadsden was to us.  He is a HUGE red zone target, he has above average hands, and he gives Beck a huge target to go over the middle, and get those third down conversions.
And with the first pick in the 2008 NFL Draft...The Miami Dolphins select...Glenn Dorsey-LSU

by FinzD54 on Feb 29, 2008 4:02 PM EST reply actions

Justin Smith.... Interesting!
There is your other pass rushing DE.  He has the size to play in a 3-4 also, but i think Cinci played a 4-3... anyone, anyone?

If they sign him, that lowers the chance of a Chris Long pick.

by LeftCoastFinFan on Feb 29, 2008 4:26 PM EST reply actions

Signing Smith would mean the
first pick is going to be Jake Long or Matt Ryan.  My money would be on Long.
