Free Agency/Trade Rumors

[editor's note, by Matty I] I've added a new post below this one that is just an editorial as we begin a new era in Dolphins football. Be sure to check that out. I've reset this timestamp to keep this as the first post on the site as I will keep updating it with news/rumors. [end note]

This is a thread I'll continually update tonight and tomorrow with updates on any and all Miami Dolphin related rumors.  So be sure to check back in frequently and leave your thoughts as free agency kicks off.  Now onto the rumors/reports:

2:13 am: It's time to get to bed for this guy. Feel free to post anything that happens while I'm not available. I'll be back tomorrow, mid-morning, with a new running thread to talk free agency (and trades, of course).

2:05 am: Alex Marvez is reporting that Cleo Lemon will visit with the Jaguars later today. Take him! Please! This could signify that the Jags will not be able to keep last year's backup, Quinn Gray. Gray is a guy I'd LOVE to have in Miami as the "vet" to go along with John Beck and whoever the Dolphins take in April's draft.

1:48 am: Updating a previous update, the Dallas Morning News is reporting that, besides Houston which we talked about earlier, cornerback Jacques Reeves will also meet with the Saints, Chiefs, and Rams in the coming days. And despite having his former position coach, Todd Bowles, in Miami, still no mention of the Dolphins having interest in Reeves.

1:43 am: The 49ers' offensive line is getting raided already in free agency. The Raiders have signed OT Kwame Harris, according to ProFootballTalk. Lineman seem to be going quick. And the Dolphins still have 2 starting spots open AND need depth. But we can't forget the draft, either, when talking about the holes that need to be filled. And that's especially true for the tackle position, which is deeper in 2008 than it has been in years.

12:51 am: And the Dolphins have made their first splash! The Press Democrat reports the Dolphins have signed free agent guard Justin Smiley to a 5 year, $25 million deal with $9 million guaranteed. More on this in the above post. But a good early signing, indeed!

12:46 am: I suggest checking out this blog post by the Sun-Sentinel's Omar Kelly. In a nutshell, he says that the Dolphins "really like" Ernest Wilford and it will likely come down to Buffalo and Miami for his services. He also says that the Cowboys and Dolphins are in the "late stages" of completing a deal for Jason Ferguson. It's believed the Dolphins would send Dallas a "later second day pick." As far as the offensive line goes, Kelly tells "don't be surprised if the Dolphins go after Jacksonville's Maurice Williams. He's viewed as one of the top young left tackles on the market." But would Miami really move Vernon Carey to the right side for Williams?

12:36 am: The NY Daily News is reporting that the Jets plan to make an offer to Alan Faneca that averages $8 million per season. Rich Cimini also reports that "barring an upset, they will get their man." The report also claims that an official announcement won't come for a day or two. Let me say this: due to how cocky the Jets seem to be about landing Faneca, I'd love to see Miami swoop in and offer $9 million per year and bring Faneca to Miami. But I could just be a bit crazy.

12:19 am: Updating the Asante Samuel speculation, the St. Petersburg Times is reporting that Samuel is "bound for Philadelphia." They say nothing is "official yet," though. Rotoworld points out that the Eagles would likely wait until tomorrow to make an official announcement so that the tampering isn't as obvious.

12:14 am: Incase you're curious, Flozell Adams' deal with Dallas was for 6 years, $42 million with $15 million in guarantees, according to ESPN. I'm actually surprised a bit by how low the guaranteed money is. I guess it gives Dallas the ability to cut him if his play drops opp as he climbs towards the wrong side of 35 years of age.

12:01 am: It has begun!

11:49 pm: The Houston Chronicle is reporting that the Texans have visits scheduled with former Dolphin Rex Hadnot and former Cowboys corner Jacques Reeves. Hadnot is expected to leave Miami, as it seems Parcells and Jeff Ireland have no intention on bring him back. But Reeves, many believed, was a guy the Dolphins would target to bring depth to Miami's secondary.

11:42 pm: ProFootballTalk is reporting that there's talk that the Eagles already have a verbal deal in place with Asante Samuel. Yes, it would be tampering if this was true. But everyone does it, really, so nobody really cares. Of course, PFT reported earlier this week that the Saints had a deal in place with Samuel. So we'll see. But according to the source, which is gcobb.com, Samuel is in Philly already and "it's done." We'll find out shortly.

11:28 pm: The Dallas Morning News is reporting that the Dolphins and Cowboys "are discussing a trade" that would send NT Jason Ferguson to Miami. It is known that Parcells has always loved Ferguson. But Ferguson is coming off of a season ending injury he suffered in week 1 when he suffered a torn right bicep. However, it's believed he'll be ready to go when training camp rolls around. Ferguson is a big guy, at 6'3, 310, but is 33 years old. He has 2 years remaining on his contract and is owed $4 million in both 2008 and 2009.

11:18 pm: We'll get this started with two interesting tidbits that come courtesy of NFL Network's Adam Schefter on NFL Total Access.  First, talking about QBs, Schefter said he believes that Bill Parcells has taken notice of Billy Volek and that Volek will eventually land in Miami.  He also reports believes that Cardinals' free agent linebacker Calvin Pace would be "a great guy to add to their defense."  He calls Pace the kind of player Parcells loves because he's big and tough.  You just have to wonder where he'd fit in if the Dolphins were to run a 3-4 defense.  Miami already has Jason Taylor and Joey Porter to play outside.  Could Pace move inside along side Channing Crowder?

I know there is a floor
to the salary structure. I'd find it hard to believe that Parcells/Ireland wasn't gonna go after Adams. I wonder if this will prompt them to put a bit more money into a Faneca or Samuels bidding war that they normally weren't thinking about doing.

Possibly
The Dolphins do have to get within $16 million of the $116 million salary cap.  Maybe they don't go after Faneca, though, because the bidding is going to be outrageous and instead they sign two good guards (rather than 1 great one) that are both relatively young (Jacob Bell and Justin Smiley).

Interesting concept
I had not thought of that.  Why go for the big fish in the ocean when there are other serviceable fishies available.  These moves would be cheaper and then we could still address outstanding needs in the draft.

Jacob Bell and Justin Smiley
I could go along with that. But I would like to see them at least make a effort for Samuels services. Not break the bank, just let me hear that ya tried.-)

So you're not one of those...
...who claim Samuel is just a product of New England's system?

I'm not, either, so don't get me wrong.  But it seems like a ton of Dolphin fans feel this way about him.  Probably just their Patriot hatred blinding them.

Can't say I blame them for that, though.

Why
would a FA of Samuel's caliber have a "done deal" in place without testing the market? Could the deal really be that good?

well
because his agent has already been talking to teams and has already been talking contracts....

might have been SI or even on sportscenter that I heard last week that the eagles were the only team willing to give Samuel $11 mil a season....

and they were reporting that it would likely be a 5 year $55 mil or 6 year $66 mil contract....

I'll assume that there'll be the usual poison pill 6th or 7th year contract number that will make the deal (cough, cough) larger then clemens...

Faneca
Well, it is interesting that many people thought Adams was a done deal.  I was not as I heard he was in negotiations with the Cowboys earlier this week.  Pipe dreams to get him in my opinion.  If you pay Faneca big bucks then we do not have to draft Jake Long.  I know we have a young QB back there and he needs oline help.  Also we sucked against the run a lot last year, so we may have to go Chris Long.  I think if we go with Chris then it has to be QB and offensive line in the 2nd round, unless there is another veteran QB that will be here.

It is between the Longs now, and I think Parcell's cannot go wrong with either in meeting the team's needs.

LOL
Tommy Kelly Highest DT paid ever. It could be worse, we could be run by those idiots in Oakland.

I think someone post about Ferguson earlier but
from PFT:

Nick Eatman of DallasCowboys.com reports that the 'Boys could be sending defensive tackle Jason Ferguson to the Dolphins for one or more late-round picks.

Ferguson tore a biceps in Week One of the 2007 season, and missed the rest of the year.  He has played for Fins V.P. of football operations Bill Parcells with the Jets and the Cowboys.

Other former Tuna guys who soon could be joining the Fins include running back Julius Jones and tackle Jason Fabini

Volek would be a nice pickup...
for that veteran QB spot, if the price is right.

by urbino on Feb 29, 2008 12:24 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

why
I mean I like the guy, I just don't think he's the right fit for the dolphins...

he's not going to be the QB of the future for the dolphins, right?? (I understand it if you think he is - but then we'd have to discuss and disagree on that point)

And if he isn't the answer at QB what good would he do for the phins in there current position. they are not a playoff team next year and hence have no need for QB insurance, and as a result he would only be taking a roster space and practice snaps from some one who could be the future qb for the dolphins (my choice - say J johnson with a 4th round pick)

Because BP likes to have...
a veteran QB on the roster.

by urbino on Feb 29, 2008 12:37 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

but that
doesn't make it the correct choice??

I mean he started vinnie in dallas. did that do anything for the franchise?

by W NY Fins Fan on Feb 29, 2008 12:55 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I didn't say anything about starting him.
I just said he'd be a nice pickup for the veteran QB spot, given that BP is probably looking for one.  He's played well whenever he's had the chance, he's had good coaching with the Titans, and he'd probably be a good mentor for Beck.

I'm not in love with the guy.  I wouldn't even have thought of him, had Matty not mentioned the rumor.  But if there's substance to the rumor, I have to say I wouldn't be upset about it.  Signing him.  There's a big leap from signing the guy to making him the starter.

by urbino on Feb 29, 2008 1:03 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

if you don't start him
what does he do for the team???

I just don't see what having a vet QB does for the 08 dolphins? if they were a playoff team I'd agree, but right now it just takes snaps away from any QB they draft.... kind of like what Cam did to beck for the first 8 games...

he had green/lemon and beck didn't get any snaps, so when they wanted to look to the future Beck had very little prep time... had they just cut lemon after green (cough/cough) beat him out for the starting job... beck would have had 1st team snaps starting with week 1 and likely would have had a much better understanding of the team then he had when cam decided in week 8 that maybe we should get beck some snaps...

Again . . .
we're talking about 2 different things.  You're talking about whether or not it's a good idea to sign a veteran QB.  I'm taking it as a given that, given our front office, we will sign one.  Given that, I think Volek's a better fit than just about any other veteran QB on the market.

Pats sign WR Kelley Washington.
Patriots agreed to terms with WR Kelley Washington.

Probably not the receiver deal Patriots fans wanted five minutes before free agency opened. Still, the timing shows how much New England values Washington. He'll remain a special teams leader and could see more snaps in the offense if the wideout position thins out. Feb. 28 - 11:58 pm et

No deal with Moss
Moss is officially a free agent!  Now THAT is a player worth signing to a fat contract.  'Course I can't see him playing for a rebuidling team.

Miami to Offer Pace Mega-Deal?
Don't be surprised if Arizona linebacker Calvin Pace leaves South Florida as a member of the Miami Dolphins following a free-agent visit.

A league source told FOXSports.com that Miami is preparing to offer Pace the same kind of mega-deal that linebackers Adalius Thomas and Joey Porter received in free agency last off-season. New England and Miami signed Thomas and Porter respectively to five-year, $32 million contracts that included $20 million in guaranteed money.

QB
Of course we need a solid backup for Beck or even someone to push him for the starting position. But if we grab Volek or McCown or Collins then doesn't everyone know we won't take Matt Ryan and as a result we have no partners to trade down?

My guess is that everyone knows Miami isn't taking a QB at #1, so we might as well get a good FA now and figure out which Long to take.

Do we take Ryan or McFadden even though we don't want them and then see if Atlanta or Oakland or Dallas want to play? Seems awfully risky.
