REPORT: Channing Crowder in car accident?

Courtesy of CBS 4:

An early morning crash in Hollywood may have involved a sidelined Miami Dolphins' player.

The Florida Highway Patrol said around 5:15 a.m. they received a call about a car that had gone off the Hollywood Boulevard exit ramp on the Florida Turnpike and slammed into a palm tree. When an FHP trooper arrived at the accident site, he found keys inside the abandoned vehicle along with a blackberry, a set of crutches in the back seat and a gun.

A check of the car's license plate showed it was registered to Dolphins' linebacker Channing Crowder.

This isn't what this team needs right now, that's for sure.  More on this as I hear it.

**UPDATE**: Local 10 adds this bit of info:

There were no reports of any injuries and Dolphins officials said they weren't sure if Crowder was driving the truck at the time of the crash.

More on this as we hear it...[end update]

**UPDATE #2**: CBS 4 has added this to their article:

CBS4 contacted Crowder who said he had let a friend borrow his truck and that the friend was okay.

Did they ask why his friend is a friggin idiot and decided to abandon the scene and leave the car behind to be found by police? Of course not. They never ask the "right" questions. [end update #2]

**UPDATE #3**: The Palm Beach Post tells us that Crowder has confessed to being the driver and was issued a couple of citations:

Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder was cited for careless driving and leaving the scene of a crash after he lost control of his Dodge pickup truck on Florida's Turnpike this morning and and hit a tree, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers tracked the vehicle to Crowder. When they contacted Crowder at his home Broward County, he admitted to being the driver at the time of the crash. He stated that he was tired, lost control on the wet ramp, and struck a tree, troopers said.

"He did not want to wait in the rain and got a ride home," FHP said in a statement.

Crowder was issued a citation for careless driving, a moving infraction, and leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage, a 2nd degree misdemeanor.

Personal property was recovered from the vehicle and returned to Crowder.

So I guess that ends that...for now.[end update #3]

At the very
least, there'll be weapon charges. You don't leave your registered and permitted weapon in the back seat for someone else to have access to.

My guess, all he'll get is his weapon consficated, loose his permit and pay a fine.

He can't even walk to work cause his crutches were in the truck...........

Being a...
pro athlete, he'll naturally be given a slap on the wrist. Well, at least compared to what the average person would get.

You can bet if Matty left his truck or car, or whatever, crashed on the side of the road with his Pistol in the back seat, that he'd have a heck of a lot to answer for. Not to mention, no high paid lawyer, etc, to sweet talk his way out of it for him.

Nah.
if he wasnt a pro athlete it wouldn't be on the news, and the driver would be given a fine, lose his permit, and the charges would be ACD'ed. depending on matty's prior record of course.

However if his record says he hunts with bobby knight or  D cheney then all bets are off.

Unrelated....
have the dolphins hired a WR coach yet? I've been out of the loop for a bit and can't recall.

I ask because James Lofton, formerly WR coach of the chargers and NFL great, is now available.

It seems to me that, unless we have someone good already, that he could be a good influence on the dolphins receivers, most of whom are young guys who could learn quite a bit.

Our WR coach
is gonna be former UCLA coach Karl Dorrell.

Looks like we found our first example
This guy won't make it out of training camp unless he's a starter. Sparano will use him as, what we won't tolerate on this team.

at this point
I can't imagine letting Channing go over leaving the scene of an accident. also, he's our biggest linebacker and you know Parcells loves them big.

Did You Know
Channing Crowder is the son of former NFL defensive lineman Randy Crowder, who was a sixth-round pick by the Dolphins in 1974.

I didn't, so I was surprised when I found this...

2 New coaches:
Dolphins luring two assistants from the college ranks

By Omar Kelly | Sun-Sentinel.com

MOBILE, Ala. - It appears the Dolphins continue to fill out Tony Sparano's coaching staff by luring a head coach, and an assistant from the college ranks.

Virginia Military Institute head coach Jim Reid resigned on Wednesday to join the Dolphins as linebackers coach according to a VMI official.

Reid, who compiled a 3-19 record at VMI the past two seasons, will work for his former boss, former Syracuse coach Paul Pasqualoni, the Dolphins newly appointed defensive coordinator.

Reid coached Syracuse's defense line for Pasqualoni in the 2004 season.

Reid also served as the head coach at the University of Richmond from 1995-2003, leading the Spiders to a pair of Atlantic 10 Conference titles, and guided the University of Massachusetts football program from 1986 through 1991, posting a 36-29-2 record over those six seasons.

While Reid's hiring hasn't been officially announced, on Wednesday the Dolphins confirmed that Pasqualoni was hired, as was Todd Bowles (assistant head coach/ secondary) Kacy Rodgers (defensive line coach), and David Corrao.

Corrao, who previous was a linebackers coach at the University of Mississippi, will serve as the defensive quality control coach.

Linebackers coach George Edwards was retained from Cam Cameron's fired staff. He could either be reassigned - possibly to assistant linebackers coach - but there's a possibility he might not be retained by Sparano.

What in the wide, wide world of sports...
is a "defensive quality control coach?"  Isn't quality control sorta the whole point of all coaching?

by urbino on Jan 23, 2008 10:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I got this
from a Tampa Bay Bucs site:

A quality control coach will assist the defensive staff with film analysis and game-planning and help on the practice field.

Sounds like a cush-pay job, and how can I get one.
