Observations from the Bucs/Fins game
[editor's note, by Matty I] This was written by a "Phinsider" reader and I thought that, because it was so comprehensive, that I'd publish it for him on the front page so everyone would check it out. Thanks, Patssuck456, for writing this. [End of Editor's note]
Let me first say this was the most exciting preseason game I have seen in a long time.
Even though we lost, there was a lot that impressed me about this one. And some things that didn't impress me at all.
First of all, I've noticed Cam calls alot of screen plays, you need good blocking for them to work, some thing that we have not had for a while, we've seen occasions, where a a screen has failed on us big time, in this game however, alot of them worked, because well, we had good blocking. He is also agressive when it comes to fourth and short, I doubt we'll see him going for it often(as he as done this preseason) on fourth down, I think he just wants to see how the team perfoms in these kinds of situations.
Hell I doubt he calls the Statue of Liberty play again, as cool as that was.
While we saw some more agression out of this offense, and it was not as Vanilla, This offense will not look the same as it has during the preseason. And we scored alot of points, thats always a good thing.
One thing I noticed about our D is that we couldn't contain a scrambling QB. Whether it was Gracia or Gradowski you don't want to see that from your D. Also the secondary did not perfrom badly, no one was torched, the coverage was pretty good from what I saw, except from a couple of passes down the middle, and that Mike Clayton play down the sideline. TB's WRs just played really well, I will give them that, and Caddy played good too.
Here's a side note accordiong to Sportsline
"Injured Knee - Questionable for Aug. 30 preseason game at New Orleans"
So its not that bad.
Now on to some specifics
Trent Green(7/11, 42 yards, 1TD, 1 INT) - let me first say his pick was not his fault(I'll get to that soon) He played very well. He ddi a good job getting us down the field on that drive, he did not make any mistakes.
Also he did a great job of selling the Satatue of Liberty play.
John Beck(11/22 2 TDs 162) - Beck had his longest and best performance of the presason. Yes he played against back ups, but you can't deny how well he did. On one play he looked off the safety, and he threw two great TD passes, one of them in tight coverage. Yes he made some mistakes, but he is after all a rookie.
One thing I really like Beck is that he's so calm, very similar to that hated yet damn good QB who plays for the Patriots.
Also he is suprsingly quick, towards the end of the game he srambled aroound the pocket looking for Hagan.
Ronnie Brown(6 Rush, 18 yards, 2 catches for 11 yards): Other than letting the ball get taken away from him he did alright, he caught a couple of passes and had some good runs later on.
Still he should not allow the ball to be stripped away like that. Cameron didn't give him the ball alot so I wouldn't worry about his numbers. He's still returning kicks, and he's not bad at it either, although I would prefer to see Ginn back there.
Lorenzo Booker: The prodigal son returns!
He showed off good speed and good hands in his debut. Now we know how Cameron will use him. We've got good depth at RB, we'll see more of him next week, but the queetion remains: will he back up Ronnie? or will Chatman?
Ted Ginn - After following a game in which he didn't do much Ted Ginn played alot at WR last night and he impressed, he's got good hands and he's willing to take a shot as evidenced by a block he made. If I coudl desribe him in onre word, besides fast, it would be clutch.
Derek Hagan - Besides that one catch for a TD he did not do much, he dropped a few passes, this is suprising since he has done well all camp. I hope he does better next time, we can't afford him dropping passes, especially when the game is on the line.
Matt Roth - He is going to be special this year, in all 3 preseason games he's made a big play and he made the biggest play last night with his pick, with one hand, and he almost ran it back. He almost had a sack though, i don't know what happened, he just failed to wrap the QB up, maybe he tripped on the infeild dirt on that play?
The Offensive line - they kept improving from last week, the starters did not give up a sack and they played well in pass protection, I would say they were inconsistent in Run Blocking, sometimkes the holes were there, othere times they were not, still they have improved.
Jay Feely and Brandon Fields - That was a hell of a kick, even though it just barely missed. He's got agreat leg on him thats for sure. As for Fields, all I can say is Donnie who? He's a solid punter, Jones won't be missed.
Well thats about it, and congrats if you read the whole thing.
