Week 13 Open Thread: Jets at Dolphins

New York Jets (2-9) at Miami Dolphins (0-11)
Sunday, December 2
1:00 pm EST, CBS
Dolphin Stadium
Sunny, 81 degrees
Line: Dolphins -1, Over/Under 38

Team Offensive Rankings

Jets - 30th total offense (280.8), 20th rush offense (96.5), 25th pass offense (184.3), 25th scoring offense (16.5)

Dolphins - 27th total offense (290.1), 15th rush offense (109.2), 26th pass offense (180.9), 24th scoring offense (16.6)

Team Defensive Rankings

Jets - 30th total defense (366.3), 31st rush defense (150.5), 18th pass defense (215.7), 28th scoring defense (25.3)

Dolphins - 16th total defense (325.1), 30th rush defense (148.5), 3rd pass defense (176.6), 27th scoring defense (25.2)

Today's Inactives

Jets: WR Jerricho Cotchery, QB Marques Tuiasosopo, CB Andre Dyson, DE Mike Devito, T Jacob Bender, T Adrian Jones, TE Jason Pociask, and DE Kareem Brown

Dolphins: LB Zach Thomas, OT Anthony Alabi, WR Kerry Reed, DE Derreck Robinson, LB Rob Ninkovich, DBs Jereme Perry and Tuff Harris, and DT Anthony Bryant

3 Absolute Keys to the Game

1. Win special teams battle. This is quite simple. Ted Ginn needs to make a play or two in the return game. Doesn't have to be a touchdown, but good field position is a must. On the flip side, the Dolphins' coverage unit must contain Leon Washington and not allow him any big returns.

2. Aggressive play calling by Miami. We've all talked about this a lot this past week. Cam's play calling, especially since John Beck took over, has been too conservative and predictable. Time for Cam to let John try and make some plays down the field. It's time to pass more on first down and try deep passes on 2nd and short. Now's the time, Cam. NOW!!!!

3. Pressure Kellen Clemens. He's a young quarterback who is liable to make mistakes. The Dolphins have only 17 sacks in 11 games. However, last week, they were able to get some pressure on Big Ben by using creative blitzes. Dom Capers needs to do the same thing today to force some turnovers and create some big plays.

Prediction: This has to be the week, doesn't it? The Dolphins are even favored. So let's get it done!!! Dolphins win 20-16.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

**UPDATE**: Speechless. We've reached a new rock bottom. I need to just forget about this team for a while. So I'm out of here for now. Continue providing your thoughts below. I'll be back later tonight with my usual recap post.

It seems the...
...swiss cheese defense is back

Whoever this guy is who...
put on joey porter's jersey, he's looked pretty good last week and so far today :P

by Natalya on Dec 2, 2007 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

The FG is nice but...
being inside the NY 35 twice and coming way with 2 field goals only is a little disappointing.

by Natalya on Dec 2, 2007 1:49 PM EST reply actions

On the flip side...
Feely looks sharp and given how the game is going, it may well come down to him.

by Natalya on Dec 2, 2007 1:50 PM EST reply actions

okay, I never game time blog
but I have some things to say this morning.
  • Defense started back on their heels but seeming to be coming after them.
  • I am sick of Cameron calling run after run and putting us in 3rd and long, or better yet 4th and 1.
  • At least on the 4th and 1, he runs a sneck and not a halfback option.  Maybe he checked the play percentage chart?
  • Worrell is out... this is a good thing.  He is worthless in pass protection.  Put in Shulters.
  • I still wanrt to see J. Allen lay some wood in pass coverage.  He is great in run support, but let him play back in free safety on a couple and pull a Rodney Harrison.
  • Ginn is looking better on retruns. Vision geting better.
  • Cameron, let beck throe the ball on First down!  i am sick of Wanny ball!
  • Okay, now throughthe ball again on 2nd down.
  • Fine, good play.. now throe it again!

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 2:01 PM EST reply actions

Perfect example for all you "results defines
the play".

I think that was the best series I have seen in games!!!

I don't care about the pick.  I can about being afraid to try.  Now let the defense play. and then go right pack and do it again!

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 2:07 PM EST reply actions

What the HELL?
Who are these guys wearing the white jerseys, and what have they done with the real dolphins?!!!!!

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 2:09 PM EST reply actions

Oh boo hoo.....
If the Fins keep that kind of fire all game, those penalties own't even matter!

Just don't make the penalties negate the scores... please!

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 2:11 PM EST reply actions

Shulters is in!
i don't love him, but I can't stand Worrell!

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 2:13 PM EST reply actions

Please send Kellen Clemens a thank you card...
his mistakes have gifted us 10 points.

Merry Christmas Kellen :)

by Natalya on Dec 2, 2007 2:15 PM EST reply actions

Matty, you and I disagreed about Daniels last year
but he is just not fast enough to jam a guy and then run with him.

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 2:15 PM EST reply actions

Jets are showing what you can do...
...with speed.  Washington and Brad Smith making plays with their speed.

by Matty I on Dec 2, 2007 2:18 PM EST reply actions

Crowder can not be left alone in pass coverage
We have seen that all season, even when playing outside against the TE.  He need to be able to hit someone to be effective.

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 2:18 PM EST reply actions

TIme for the 2 minute drill
let's see what the O can do before the end of the half..

by Natalya on Dec 2, 2007 2:19 PM EST reply actions

AGREED, but it looks like he is doing it...
finally!  This is all I want from cam.  Call the plays that will win the game.  If the players don't execute, that if practice and talent issues, but quit calling Chatman up the middle when it doesn't work!

I am actually liking most of the play calling on both sides right now!

(even the plays that don't work, but are still the right call for the right situation)

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

Don't look now...
but Lorenzo Booker is your leading receiver so far :)

by Natalya on Dec 2, 2007 2:20 PM EST reply actions

those are the kind of plays...
...you have to live with when you got a rookie QB making his 3rd start

by Matty I on Dec 2, 2007 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

I don't disagree at all...
that's part of the learning process.

And better he learns while being given a chance to actually make a play than simply handing off on 1st & 2nd down, then passing short on third downs.

by Natalya on Dec 2, 2007 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

Yep
He'll learn, he just cannot let those picks get to him.

by Patssuck456 on Dec 2, 2007 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

gotta run ginn to the corner when it forces 1 on 1
i don't care about the pick.  It's gonna happen, and beck will learn.  I am not concerned about this in the least.

Cam is lettign Beck play, thet D is playing pretty good,  the team is not playing like thye are scared.  If we play this way all game, i would be bummed if we lost, but I would be thrilled to see the potential!

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 2:34 PM EST reply actions

Note to Cam:
Don't crawl inside a shell.  Come after them, keep using the pass to open the run.  Go after them!

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 2:38 PM EST reply actions

Awww, you can argue that either way
But i really would have liked to see an all go pattern on that last play before the half,  just for morale.

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 2:40 PM EST reply actions

Beck
To you folks who are actually seeing the game,  How is Beck looking aside from the 2 picks?

by midwayrider on Dec 2, 2007 2:40 PM EST reply actions

I'd say pretty good
He's accurate on his short balls.  He's noticably improved on the swing pass, which he struggled with in his first start.  He narrowly missed Ginn deep on a post corner route where he overthrew Ginn by a yard or two.

I like the fact that he's willing to stand in the pocket, deliver an accurate pass, and take a hit.  He's been under fire a lot and has shown that quick release.

by Matty I on Dec 2, 2007 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

But with all that said...
...there's obviously still plenty of room for improvement.

by Matty I on Dec 2, 2007 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

I think beck is playing great!
Int, gonna happen.  He will learn from it. But so far he looks as good as any QB in the game not named brady or payton.  He is quick, decisive, and fearless.

Certainly room for improvement, but that only makes me ore optomistic.  He has some catchable balls dropped, and hit line protection is not great. Chat man is now out, and Gado is in.

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

Is Gado active? - halftime adjustments
i would love to see him at mid field in for chapman on a 2nd and 4, up the middle.

i also don't want to see runs up the middle anymore this game, until we start running of tackle and sweeps a bit our of a strong set.

Put L.Booker in the back field trips to the short side, to pick up the dbs, and pitch out to get him to the edge and let's see how he doesone on one against a lone LB.

And set up put some one one that damn jets RB, on every play!

:)

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 2:52 PM EST reply actions

I think Beck
has been OK. He's not getting a lot of help from the running game. He's also not gotten happy feet either and rushed throws. Plus the jets have been coming after him pretty hard.

by Natalya on Dec 2, 2007 2:54 PM EST reply actions

Interceptions
On the interceptions has Beck really looked bad or that the passes even been close to being caught?  He is really a tough guy but it sounds like he has been getting lots of pressure I sure hope he can hold out.

by midwayrider on Dec 2, 2007 2:56 PM EST reply actions

on the picks
The first one was tipped,Rhodes made a great play for the second pick and Beck did not see him.

by Patssuck456 on Dec 2, 2007 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, the second one was a rookie throw...
good defense.  If the throw was to the pylon instead of the post,it would not have been picked, but it was just a good play by the D.

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

By the way
I hope you guys are all enjoying your 80 degree weather.  We got 27 out side and snow and blowing like crazy.

by midwayrider on Dec 2, 2007 2:59 PM EST reply actions

I'm with you, midway
I live in the northeast and it's ugly out today...snow and freakin' cold!!

by Matty I on Dec 2, 2007 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

Beck fumble, due to a total
blindside wiff by liwenski.  We need Faneca next year.

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 3:00 PM EST reply actions

Fins D is playing pretty well, in spite of
the jest 20 pts.

With a little more success in the passing game, Cam should be able to start to set the Jet's D back on their heals a bit.  Just pray Samkon can run the ball!

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 3:05 PM EST reply actions

nice blocking, david martin!
why not get our rookie QB killed...

by Matty I on Dec 2, 2007 3:07 PM EST reply actions

Fucking Block!
Jesus Christ how difficult can that be?

by Patssuck456 on Dec 2, 2007 3:08 PM EST reply actions

Those wanting to see Beck throw it more today..
...are going to get their wish.  We might see 40+ attempts by the time the game is over!

by Matty I on Dec 2, 2007 3:12 PM EST reply actions

now it's starting to get ugly!
this team can't pick up a blitz, can they?

by Matty I on Dec 2, 2007 3:18 PM EST reply actions

If this isn't a nightmare game
for Beck, (5 turnovers), I don't know what is!

It is the kind of game you expect a rookie QB to have at some point. Hopefully there won't be more of these...

by Natalya on Dec 2, 2007 3:20 PM EST up reply actions

0-16 here we come
seriously, no run game, so you get one dimensional with a rookie qb, a very average wr corps and extra blockers that suck on pass protection (martin, peelle, chatman, etc) .... our only hope is that samkon gado pans out in a 2-3 week stretch and we can run cam's system effectively. And washington just kill us on that play.... man it sucks to be us

by s55ean on Dec 2, 2007 3:21 PM EST reply actions

Well, so much for half time adjustments.
now would be a good time to run the ball, maybe some quick TE or WR screens or draw plays.  The Jets D is betting on the pass.

D is playing pretty agressive tho.

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 3:25 PM EST reply actions

Nice
We are now officially getting blown out by a 2-9 team in what we thought was our best chance to win a game.

by Neo on Dec 2, 2007 3:27 PM EST reply actions

this game is definitely still winnable.
Here is where it is going to come down to coaching.

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 3:29 PM EST reply actions

11 minutes is enough time
for 3 touchdowns.  We just need to throw.  Never run when we have no running back.

by Beck4Mercy on Dec 2, 2007 3:38 PM EST reply actions

you have to make the pass rush pay
Send booker short and Ginn deep!  On almost every play. booker or martin or hagen for five until the Pass rush slows, then Ginn deep.  Play that game all day long.

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

Sayings
  1. Just keep a stiff upper lip.
  2. Keep yer chin up (Unless yer getting sacked)
  3. Every dark cloud has a silver lining
  4. We'll get'em next year
  5. And with the number #1 Pick in the 2008 Draft  Miami picks ???????

by midwayrider on Dec 2, 2007 3:39 PM EST reply actions

okay, i give up. we're done.
At least I saw something better from Cam.  Not great, but some flexibility and improvement.

this is just painful

by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 2, 2007 3:53 PM EST reply actions

Honestly
I am sick to my stomach. Blame whoever you want. We are 0-12 and just got blown out by porbably the 2nd worst team in the NFL next to us. I want Cameron gone. You all can get mad. Say it is not his fault. Give him more time. There is absoutely no justification for this. Yes I said it. I'll repeat it. I want him gone.

by Neo on Dec 2, 2007 3:57 PM EST reply actions

mmm
listen, cam is down to his Rookie QB and # ?? at Rb, he traded our best WR, and built up a whole Oline. Cam's system is founded on the RB position, and guess what, hiroshima is what our Rb situation is....  cam does not control those type of things, on the other hand, pretty happy to have seen LoBo today

by s55ean on Dec 2, 2007 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

well....

Oh Well
It wasn't that bad.....

by midwayrider on Dec 2, 2007 4:02 PM EST reply actions

Is this the appropriate time to...
reiterate my concerns over the TE position, and my draft plan (see Nat's diary)?

On second thought, maybe we should just have a moment of silence and sprinkle some chicken blood over the grave.

by urbino on Dec 2, 2007 4:29 PM EST reply actions

Worst... team.... ever....
Worse than the 0-14 Bucs.  Just pathetic.  They're lucky when one aspect of the game is going well any given Sunday.  There's plenty of blame to go around - injuries, rookies, coaching, whatever.  But this team couldn't beat most of the top 10 college teams.

Awful.  Disgusting.  Pathetic.  Pitiful.  You run out of adjectives.

by tenaciouslee on Dec 2, 2007 4:41 PM EST reply actions

Just reiterating what everybody's already said.
This whole season, even at 0-11, I thought that we weren't as bad as our record indicated. The 6/11 losses by 3 points or less definitely helped that, plus a good bit of homerism on my part. Injuries have certainly hurt, granted, but this is absolutely PATHETIC.

I'm honestly disgusted. I'm not on the "Fire Cameron" train as I subscribe to the train of thought that you have to give him and Mueller time to get "his" guys in place, but god. You have to show at least a tiny bit of competitiveness. This is the NFL and the Dolphins are supposed to be a professional team. This isn't some cupcake college.

They had better be gearing themselves up for the offseason and be ready to make a splash, whether through draft, free agency, or internal improvements. This is old.

by Grig on Dec 2, 2007 8:41 PM EST reply actions

The Good News is...
We pretty much locked up the #1 over all draft pick.  I don't see us winning any more than one game... if that. Trade down for at least three high picks.

This is embarrassing.

by gophish on Dec 2, 2007 9:44 PM EST reply actions

That's the one contest we've won..
hands down, that being the #1 pick.

Figure it this way, no other team has won less than three games, while we are winless. With only 4 to play, the dolphins are on the clock!

by Natalya on Dec 2, 2007 10:35 PM EST up reply actions

sheesh...
man, It cost me 200 bucks to get NFL sunday ticket to watch'em play, and this is what I get ! I'll reconsider next year... maybe donate those 200 so karma doesn't strike our fins next year lol
