Targeting Breakdown: Week 12 Edition

Despite the terrible conditions that the game was played in, John Beck was still able to complete over 60% of his passes.  If you remember last week, John targeted receivers just 52% of the time.  Well this week, that number drastically increased, which is certainly a positive.  Of John's 22 passes (he attempted 23, but 1 was a throw-away), 14 of them (64%) were intended for a receiver.  Marty Booker was actually targeted the most this week, have 8 passes thrown his way.  Last week, Marty only had 1 pass thrown his direction.  Ted Ginn was targeted 5 times, catching 3 of them.  He currently has caught 64% of the passes thrown his way since John became starter.  That's certainly a good sign.  I guess those who questioned Teddy's hands were way off.

Meanwhile, a running back was only targeted 3 times on Monday night.  And one of those was off of a deflection by a Steelers lineman in which the ball fell into the hands of Chatman for a loss of 4.  So why no swing passes like we've been accustomed to seeing?  Maybe they just weren't there at all thanks to good coverage by Pittsburgh.  Or maybe Cam saw that John struggled last week completing swing passes and decided to avoid them until John could get better timing with his backs.  Either way, Cam seemed to replace those swing passes with WR screens.  Personally, I like the WR screen, especially to Ginn.  If executed and blocked right, it would be a very big play.

Total Targets
Here's how the full season targeting breaks down through 11 games:

Marty Booker: 72 targets (21%)
Chris Chambers: 66 targets (19%)
Ronnie Brown: 46 targets (13%)
Ted Ginn: 31 targets (9%)
Justin Peelle: 31 targets (9%)
David Martin: 29 targets (8%)
Jesse Chatman: 29 targets (8%)
Derek Hagan: 28 targets (8%)
Patrick Cobbs: 5 targets (1%)
Reagan Mauia: 3 targets (1%)
Aaron Halterman: 3 targets (1%)

Beck's Targets
And here's how John's targeting breaks down through his first 2 NFL starts:

Ted Ginn: 11 targets (26%)
Marty Booker: 9 targets (21%)
Jesse Chatman: 6 targets (14%)
Derek Hagan: 5 targets (12%)
David Martin: 4 targets (9%)
Justin Peelle: 4 targets (9%)
Patrick Cobbs: 2 targets (5%)
Aaron Halterman: 2 targets (5%)

Receiver Success
Here's the updated catch percentages for those players with at least 10 receptions:

David Martin: 76%
Justin Peelle: 74%
Jesse Chatman: 72%
Derek Hagan: 50%
Ted Ginn: 48%
Marty Booker: 47%

Chambers SD Update
Last week, Chambers had 5 catches on 7 targets.  Here is where his San Diego totals currently stand:

Targeted: 22%
Catch percentage: 55%

Question for you about Beck
Matty 1 in relooking at this game several times I've noticed that the pass to Booker in the 4th period while good was not the pass John should have thrown, was it? If you look at the replay you will clearly see Ted Ginn has beaten his guy and if John connects Ted runs it in for a TD. Am I right or do you see something I missed? Maybe he couldn't make that pass or he didn't see it or maybe I'm seeing something that just isn't there? What is your take on this?

At first glance I would agree...
...but there's a safety over top of Ginn.  You see that when the ball is in flight to Booker, a Steeler comes from out of the screen and into the play and is actually the one who makes the tackle.  I believe it probably was his job to stay on top of Ginn, but once the ball was in flight to Booker, he obviously reacted.

Queston: Who do you think our #2 WR should be?
I am assuming Ginn #1.  Didn't we have some guys in training camp that should promise?  Like Kerry Reed?  I know he is young and unproven but he had great chemistry with Beck, and can't be much worse that our current #2 guys, can he?

Why not give him a shot?

Any thoughts?

Tight Ends
I'm beginning to think the TE position needs to be a priority in the off-season.  It's a little difficult for me to tell, since so few games have been available to me here, but from what I have seen, it looks like we're really weak there.

Their season reception percentages look nice, but I haven't actually seen them perform anywhere close to that level.  I've seen a ton of easy catches dropped, especially by Peelle.  And they can't block.  Not even a little.  Ends run through them like sh** through a goose.

When you're a TE and you can't catch and you can't block, there's really not much left for you to do but find another way to make a living.

So maybe on draft day we should be looking at a TE and maybe Jake Long.

Urbino...
look at it this way. there are very, very few positions on the field other than possibly kicker, where the dolphins do not need a major upgrade...TE, OL, WR, TE, DT, CB, S.....

Well if they ever want to go to the playoffs that is.

by Natalya on Nov 29, 2007 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

Clearly. But it's a question of timing.
When you need everything, it becomes a question of what do you get in 2008 and what can you wait till '09 for.  What I'm saying is that, especially with the defense starting to play better, it now appears to me that TE may be a position we can't make due at until the '09 draft; we may have to draft one (or 2) this year and wait till '09 to draft for some of the defensive positions, instead of vice versa.

A TE obviously isn't something you're likely to burn your first pick on, but we may need to take one or two in the 2nd-4th rounds with picks we might otherwise have used to land another linebacker or safety.

So....
Nat, you aknowledge that the team need a major upgrade in TE, OL, WR, TE, DT, CB, S..... positions to make it to the playoff, but you want to blame all this mess on CCam? After your thread, we are lucky to be battleling out with other teams by losing by 3 points. Get your bearing together, cause you just gave an excuse to CCam for been 0-11 :0

Aleta...
did you read the last sentence of my comment?

I said the dolphins could use these upgrades "Well if they ever want to go to the playoffs that is."

IMO the dolphins have a roster this year that is good enough for 4-6 wins over a 16 game season. As is, they have win 0 games, which points to coaching. You of course, may not agree.

So if they want to be a 10 win playoff team, then yes, major upgrades are needed.

by Natalya on Nov 30, 2007 11:52 AM EST up reply actions

But basicly..
even with the super up-grade, we are not going to make the plaoff because of CCam. So what is the point of doing the up-grade? You should not talk about anything else but to fire CCam, cause he is a HS soccer coach. Don't worry about the draf, nor the FA, cause if CCam is onboard we are not going anywhere. Chill on those thing and just focus on point out how bad CCam is.

Dude.... relax.... :)
I might have my issues with Cam, but i believe Randy is a good evaluator of talent and will have a lot of say in who comes and who goes.

Even if Cam is still here next year (which looks likely), Randy will add to the level of talent on the team.

by LeftCoastFinFan on Nov 30, 2007 3:13 PM EST reply actions

Neo...
you said that Randy is a good evaluator of talent, but he was the one who evaluated CCam, so i believed thatRandy is not that good after all, because CCam sucks, Right?. I would said that Randy is as much part of the problem as CCam is.  Just saying this because this is what you guys haven been telling us for more than a month now. I'm using logic from what you stated of CCam.

So now, insted of taking about the future, which is none with CCam at the helm, let talk about who should be pour new HC. So, were are we? with The Tunafish? and mr jaw? or do you know a HS football HC, let try to cut down to senior teams only or maybe small colleges. I don't think anybody will take this HC job, so let keep it realistic.

Ps I'm relax,i just gave up and want to help people to focus insted of looking at the future with CCam as the HC, remember, there is no future with him there. ;)
