Week 11 Open Thread: Dolphins at Eagles

Miami Dolphins (0-9) at Philadelphia Eagles (4-5)
Sunday, November 18
1:00 pm EST, CBS
Lincoln Financial Field
Cloudy, 47 degrees, 80% chance of showers
Line: Eagles -10, Over/Under 40.5

Team Offensive Rankings

Dolphins - 19th total offense (316.2), 11th rush offense (119.4), 19th pass offense (196.8), 19th scoring offense (19.6)

Eagles - 7th total offense (352.9), 14th rush offense (116.1), 11th pass offense (236.8), 14th scoring offense (21)

Team Defensive Rankings

Dolphins - 20th total defense (334.2), 30th rush defense (149.7), 5th pass defense (184.6), 31st scoring defense (28.6)

Eagles - 14th total defense (322.2), 12th rush defense (100.1), 23rd pass defense (222.1), 12th scoring defense (20)

Today's Inactives

Dolphins: LB Zach Thomas, WR Kerry Reed, RB Samkon Gado, DB Jereme Perry, DT Anthony Bryant, DE Rob Ninkovich, and DE Matt Roth

Eagles: RB Tony Hunt, QB Kevin Kolb, DB Marcus Paschal, G Max Jean-Gilles, DT Kimo von Oelhoffen, G Scott Young, DE Jevon Kearse, and DE Montae Reagor

3 Absolute Keys to the Game

1. Contain Brian Westbrook. He's the engine that makes this Eagles' offense go. Without Zach Thomas, the Dolphins must somehow find a way to keep Westbrook in check.

2. No big plays allowed. This Eagles' offense is not a high scoring machine, so don't make things easy for them. Don't allow Philly to pick up easy points on a bomb to Kevin Curtis or a screen pass to Brian Westbrook that goes the distance. Make them work for their yardage. I'd rather lose because the Dolphins allowed Philly to convert tons of 3rd downs rather than losing because the Dolphins gave up two 50+ yard scoring plays for easy points.

3. Make big plays. This Dolphins offense hasn't really made any big plays at all since Ronnie Brown went down. They need to somehow find a way to create the big play. Bomb to Ginn? Return by Ginn? Screen pass that goes the distance? End around? Whatever it takes. This offense is not good enough to consistently move the ball, so big plays are needed to create scoring opportunities.

Community John Beck Prediction: Here's what all of our predictions for Beck averaged out to: 14/24 for 174 yards 1 TD and 1 Int

Prediction: Dolphins stay in the game until the 4th quarter, losing 27-13.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

**UPDATE**: So the Dolphins lose 17-7. We saw Ted Ginn get the first return TD of his career (that actually counted). John Beck played like a rookie. He made some good throws. He didn't turn it over at all, so that's good. He also would have had his first career TD pass if not for Aaron Halterman dropping the pass. All in all, I'm excited to see Beck's progress week in and week out. Much more coming later tonight. Until then, enjoy the rest of your day!

This has...
at least on paper, all the makings of a trap game for the Eagles. They had a big win last week against a close rival (redskins), have a huge game next week at NE, and this week the lowly dolphins. Maybe they are looking ahead a bit? Hmmm.

I think Ted Ginn finally makes a big play in this game, just a hunch, maybe on special teams.

I'll just throw out a prediction of 28-17 eagles winning, with a mostly competitive game being put away in the 4th quarter and the fins getting some good special teams play.

today's Dolphins game on MyP2P.eu.  :(

by urbino on Nov 18, 2007 1:10 PM EST reply actions

3 & outs
Each team goes 3 and out on their first possession. Beck's lone pass attempt was too high for Chatman, though Beck didn't really have an angle to complete it. Interesting that Beck seemed to change something at the line on his first pass attempt.

by Matty I on Nov 18, 2007 1:11 PM EST reply actions

And the Dolphins get lucky break #1...
...as the flea flicker is called back. And boy was that a hold by L.J. Smith.

by Matty I on Nov 18, 2007 1:18 PM EST reply actions

Jason Allen!!!!!
That's right...a Jason Allen sighting, as he makes a big play picking off McNabb despite Donovan having about 8 seconds to throw. Where was the pass rush on that play? Either way, great play by Allen!

Does it look like its going to rain?  How far off was the field goal? Wide or short?

by Spacefish on Nov 18, 2007 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

Waaaaaay short
Wind completely knocked it down

by tenaciouslee on Nov 18, 2007 3:04 PM EST up reply actions

Beck Looks okay
He seems pretty colected in the pocket.  What do you guys think about that fumble?

by Rytackle on Nov 18, 2007 1:37 PM EST reply actions

It was a lateral
Beck got nervous and overthrew Chatman.
He's pretty quick in the pocket.

Dunno

by Neo on Nov 18, 2007 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

Aj already doing better huh?
D. McNabb 3/11 34 yards so they pulled him for ol AJ feelers. lol

by Spacefish on Nov 18, 2007 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

Damn it
He was on my fantasy team.

by Patssuck456 on Nov 18, 2007 2:16 PM EST up reply actions

Punting?
It dosnt seem like Feilds is getting a lot of leg into his punts.  Is that a result of the wind?

by Rytackle on Nov 18, 2007 2:08 PM EST reply actions

I dont know
They were going with the wind.

by Patssuck456 on Nov 18, 2007 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

Fields
I'm being semi-serious here, but I'm guessing Fields' leg is tired out from the sheer amount of punting he's had to do all season. With Ronnie on the roster, he was fine; he had that booming leg that made me think trading Donnie Jones away was fine. But now that the offense continually sputters, I think it's starting to wear him out a little bit.

Intercepted Again
Our Secondary is really looking good....of course it is AJ Touchy Feely

by Rytackle on Nov 18, 2007 2:15 PM EST reply actions

Awesome another pick.
looks like the defense has come to Philly.

by Neo on Nov 18, 2007 2:15 PM EST reply actions

Looks like it doesnt matter
What QB the put it in...our secondary's gonna pick him off (did anyone think we would ever be able to say that again?)

by Enhalo on Nov 18, 2007 2:16 PM EST reply actions

Steppin up and out.
We DO have a secondary? Wow, This is pretty cool. Thought they were all on IR :)

by Spacefish on Nov 18, 2007 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

I like that we're Taking out Shots
It's nice to see us at least trying to throw deep to Ginn

by Rytackle on Nov 18, 2007 2:18 PM EST reply actions

Agreed
Well, just throwing to him at all really.

by Neo on Nov 18, 2007 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed
Thats something trent just didnt do and I have been saying for weeks that this needed to be done. makes me run on in my sentances! Making the Illegal eagles play off Ginn by throwing deep once or twice cause they already seen how fast he is. '6' points will do that for ya.

by Spacefish on Nov 18, 2007 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

We hear..
4th quarter is where he excels..

by Spacefish on Nov 18, 2007 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

The stats aren't a fair way...
...to judge him. He's made good reads. His arm has looked good. He should have had Hagaon on a 20 yard post pattern but a good play by the corner/possibly a drop prevented that

by Matty I on Nov 18, 2007 2:30 PM EST up reply actions

Right
He's made good desicions.

One thing I like his abilty to move around in the pocket.

Cam is calling it safe though.

by Patssuck456 on Nov 18, 2007 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

First Booker
Now its Hagan droping passes.

by Patssuck456 on Nov 18, 2007 2:20 PM EST reply actions

I don't think that was a drop so much...
...as it was a nice play by the corner (Brown I think) getting his hand in there and getting a piece.

by Matty I on Nov 18, 2007 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

First Half Over
What are our thoughts thus far? I personally think that this is how our D should be playing. And Ted Ginn....WOW

by Rytackle on Nov 18, 2007 2:28 PM EST reply actions

Well
Beck looks alright, he's playing like a rookie though.

Nice job of the OL when it comes to blocking for Beck

by Patssuck456 on Nov 18, 2007 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

87 yard
Ginn franchise record punt return.. omg.
D-line still not quit there? D-backs shiny like a new penny!

by Spacefish on Nov 18, 2007 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

Typo
Kickoff return.

by Spacefish on Nov 18, 2007 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

Let's see
Our "D" has shown up for the 1st half at least. I know Ginn and the rest of us are glad our special teams let him keep the points on the board. And with our offense struggling at least it's with a rookie QB in Philly. So far can't ask for much better than what we have it right now.

by Neo on Nov 18, 2007 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

Well thats
Typical Miami dolphins 2nd half football. Now how will our offense repond. Can they try to pick the defense up for a change?

by Neo on Nov 18, 2007 2:46 PM EST reply actions

(crickets chirping)
O.k. that was a quick score.. Illegal Eagles 10, Fins need to answer.

by Spacefish on Nov 18, 2007 2:47 PM EST reply actions

Chatman
I'm starting to see why Brown wasn't just handed the starting job

by Enhalo on Nov 18, 2007 2:52 PM EST reply actions

AJ
Betcha he throws another pic. >.>

by Spacefish on Nov 18, 2007 2:55 PM EST reply actions

Beck
Nothing to get excited about so far... some good decisions, but VERY conservative play calling by Cam.  I want to see him let it rip down the field.

Great play by our defense this game... although this feels a lot like the Buffalo game... good defense - enough to win - but no points by our offense.

by tenaciouslee on Nov 18, 2007 3:07 PM EST reply actions

4th quarter....
....time for Beck to shine!!

by Matty I on Nov 18, 2007 3:15 PM EST reply actions

Lets hope
His incompletions are disturbing me.. The Eagles have obviously adjusted. Beck seems to be doing o.k. with decisions (no picks) but can he get us down the field again?

by Spacefish on Nov 18, 2007 3:18 PM EST up reply actions

Understandable
that the incompletions worry you. But he's made good throws. One to Hagan was dropped and/or great tip by corner. On another he had David Martin open but Jesse Chatman thought it was to him and tipped it trying to catch it, causing an incompletion.

by Matty I on Nov 18, 2007 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

Well
Its good to hear since you can see it and i'm watching a gridiron of pixels :) I gotta trust you.

by Spacefish on Nov 18, 2007 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

well good news to you...
...as I'll be working on cutting up this game and making a video of every Beck pass attempt so you can all see his throws.

by Matty I on Nov 18, 2007 3:29 PM EST up reply actions

you're the man matty
i wsn't able to watch the game today (i guess that was good thing), so getting a chance to see all of beck's throws will be great.
The Jayfiss Report ...one fan's rants.

by NumberSeven on Nov 18, 2007 8:47 PM EST up reply actions

He really should've started
in the Buffalo game. Starting a rookie QB in Philly what did you expect? That could be the nail in the coffin with that TD.

by Neo on Nov 18, 2007 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

Can we all take a guess
as to who is Beck's favorite target? It's really nice to see one of the QBs actually throw to him. He's got about as many catches in this 1 game as he had all year.

by Neo on Nov 18, 2007 3:31 PM EST reply actions

Hmmm
Beck to Ginn has a great ring to it.

by Spacefish on Nov 18, 2007 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

Question answered
He CAN get us down the field! Woooohooo.

by Spacefish on Nov 18, 2007 3:32 PM EST reply actions

Hahaha
Philly had to take a time out after a Fins "What the Hell" offensive series.

by Neo on Nov 18, 2007 3:33 PM EST reply actions

NEVER
Cam doesn't have the "cantaloupes".

by Neo on Nov 18, 2007 3:36 PM EST up reply actions

Going for it?
4-inches on the goal are they going for it?

by Spacefish on Nov 18, 2007 3:36 PM EST reply actions

bad play call by Cam...
on the quick pitch

fooled no one...bad call

by Matty I on Nov 18, 2007 3:38 PM EST reply actions

and again,
Halterman should have caught that pass....that really sucks

by Matty I on Nov 18, 2007 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

Wow
your inches from the goal line and your PITCH THE DAMN BALL?!?! Are you f*cking kiddin me?

by Neo on Nov 18, 2007 3:40 PM EST up reply actions

Why not
play action or off tackle.. A frakin pitch outside?

by Spacefish on Nov 18, 2007 3:40 PM EST up reply actions

wow
bad play calling. he should of taken the 3 points.

by fins4o8 on Nov 18, 2007 3:39 PM EST reply actions

Yep
No way this offense scores 10 points in less than 3 minutes

by tenaciouslee on Nov 18, 2007 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

Ya its over
but at least with QBs numbers like we have it's from a rookie not a pointless 3rd string wanna be. Just looking at the numbers, if I didn't know who started the game I couldn't tell you if it was Beck or Lemon.

by Neo on Nov 18, 2007 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

When life gives you lemons
At least Beck has a chance of growing? Lemons rotten.

by Spacefish on Nov 18, 2007 3:46 PM EST reply actions

I dont understand that playcall at all
All you have to do is QB sneak it or have Chatman go over the top.

by Patssuck456 on Nov 18, 2007 4:18 PM EST reply actions

I was hoping for the QB sneak...
...on 1st and goal

on 4th, it wouldn't have been a good call cus they had to go 2 yards...I would have liked to see a roll out give Beck the pass/run option

by Matty I on Nov 18, 2007 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

Agree...
Was thinking they would spread them out and then run a QA sneak up the gut...

Don't know that the play call was good/bad/indifferent on the goal line - would have been nice had that guy caught the pass on 2nd or 3rd and goal, whichever down it was. (THAT should have been a TD - nice pass from Beck -> folks have to make plays though.)

You can question the play call on 4th down, but if we'd have blocked properly - might not have been an issue because Satele was pulling and was out front of Chatman. (Whether he is the one who blew the block or not, don't know...)

When he stood in the pocket and had time, he looked pretty good - threw a nice ball to Ginn over the middle and also one to Booker.  Had the typical jitters, but if you consider where he played, how aggressive they blitz, the weather, etc.  To have no TO's with the lousy field position they had all day, I think it was a real good learning experience for him.  Tack that on to next week in Pitts...

I think he will be primed for the JETS coming in - hopefully Ricky will be here as well to help out.

Definition of Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results...

by azphinner on Nov 18, 2007 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

Positives and Negatives on Personnel
Our young guys look good
-Beck: didn't turn it over, had the jitters, just needs to develop chemistry and timing.
-Ginn: showing more each week. They need to take at least a few deep shots to Ginn per game. He has to be one of the fastest guys in the league.
-Jason Allen: two picks and good tackling
-R Wright: looked pretty good and still not at 100% with that shoulder brace
-Satele, Carey, Hadnot: Solid all year
-Mauia "Juggernaut" leading the way for both Brown and Chatman
-Where is L Booker?
-Although injured this game, Matt Roth has a motor

Upgrades needed:
-Good NT
-Safety: Worrell puts up great effort but just lacks size and speed
-LB: we need more depth and playmakers
-Corner: although they played well today, they can't provide run support
-WR: another speed guy needed
-TE: Martin is not the answer
-DE: JT should only play a 3-4 LB. Teams are running straight at him with great success.  JT should only be pass rushing from the outside or dropping back in coverage.

by gophish on Nov 18, 2007 5:45 PM EST reply actions

Where we miss Ronnie is
on short yardage situations. He has the power and nose to get the first down.  Chatman is a great second option but is not a short yardage guy.  Let's see what Ricky can do next week after not playing for a while.  I think Ricky will be fine. The guy is a pure running back. He could've been smoking pot and surfing all this time, come back and run for over 4 yrds/carry behind this OL.
