E-Mail Time: John Beck
I got an e-mail from "James F," who happens to be a BYU fan. He's seen John play much more than most of us have. So I wanted to share what he had to tell me about John. Here's what he had to say:
I expect he may be a little tight out of the gate, maybe a fumble, or a pic, (hopefully not) as he is getting his game legs. But Beck is Mr. Fourth Quarter, the blood starts to pump when the game is on the line. And he is as cool as they come under pressure...He did that so many times at BYU. You may have noticed with his smoothness, how easy he makes it look, although it is not.
He's certainly optimistic. And at 0-9, I'll take some optimism any way I can get it.
And speaking of optimism, Armando Salguero, in his latest blog entry, tells us that the meetin between Cam and Ricky Williams went well today:
Williams will not practice today. The session began this afternoon and he was watching from the player lounge. He can begin practicing no later than Monday. He is able to play starting the Nov. 26 game at Pittsburgh and the Dolphins apparently have plans to use him as early as then.
That's also some good news. No better way to get his trade value a bit higher than by actually letting the man play. We'll talk more about Ricky next week, since he can't play until the Monday nighter in Pittsburgh.
**UPDATE**: In his press conference today, Cam Cameron has declared that Ricky Williams if officially a Miami Dolphin. He will be added to the 53 man roster, which I'd assume will be done following Sunday's game. Congrats to Ricky. Hopefully he has turned the corner in his "new" life! He's a good man and I wish him the best.
Also, Ricky spoke to the media today for a little over 5 minutes. To see this press conference, head over to miamidolphins.com.

Beck
Great news
I still feel as though Beck should be handled very carefully as far as playing time. I know we have played 9 games, but I still feel as though he should play half the game and Lemon the other half until he gets used to the speed of NFL defenders.
Highlights against TCU look great, but they certainly aren't anything close to an NFL D.

I'm glad...
As a fan, I still like Ricky
I am excited that he will be playing again this year. I don't necessarily expect big things from him, but he always brings that "potential" for a big play, and that makes him fun to watch.
Besides, I still have my Ricky jersey. They better not change his number from #34!
:)
As for Beck, PLEASE, PLEASE, do not expect him to beat the iggles!! My gosh, this is his FIRST real NFL game! Let's just hope he plays well, and if he somehow HAPPENS to win the game in the 4th, then of course, we will all be jumping up and down on the living room sofa.

411...
"He has earned the right to play," Cameron said. "It's not about next year. It's about doing everything we can to win this year."
Green, who has served as a mentor to Beck, agreed the rookie is ready.
"He has handled himself extremely well," Green said. "He's smart. He's committed. He has a good grasp of the offense for a young guy. You can tell he has put in his hours and done well in terms of preparation. I expect him to play well."

Here's my take on the first game for Beck. He's 15/30 passing, 260 yards, 2 TDs, 0 Interceptions and takes them down to make the game winning field goal. The defense will get 2 interceptions, 2 sacks and hold the Feagles to 17 pionts or under.
But I may be up in the night... YaaaHoooo!
If it happens
Ricky
Not sure we have the option of trading..
I wonder
Dissenting Vote
The risk level with Ricky is just way too high (especially in Miami) to keep him while you cut a younger player who has shown excellent skill in the playing time he's had. Chatman is a bit risky, too, given his past weight problems, but still less risky than Ricky. I mean, one more foul up from Ricky, and he's banned from the league forever. With Chatman, it's just fat; nobody ever got kicked out of the league for liking to eat too much.
Fat comes off. A lifetime league ban doesn't.
Danm it!!
I think because of the suspension

I really like Ricky
This press conference today was inspiring. I know the guy has had head problems, but I don't recall ever seeing a football player appear as unpretentious and sincere as Ricky does when fielding questions. Every time they asked him a tough question that I would expect him to dance around or get defensive about, he came up with an answer that you had to respect. I especially liked how he answered the question about whether he was playing only for financial reasons.
It is certainly almost impossible to ever count on him to not get himself suspended again, but he is certainly the kind of guy you want to root for to succeed.
Go Ricky! :)

Let's Hope Not
Let's hope John Boy puts that idea clean out of his head. How many times have we seen guys come out of college who had gotten away with that at the college level, then tried it in the pros against the MUCH faster defenses and had it turn instantly into 6 points going the other way.
Don't do it, John.
If you're going down, go down. Do not throw over the middle as you're going down backwards. Danger, Will Robinson!
