Confirmed: Let the John Beck era begin!!

Well we know have heard it straight from the horses mouth: John Beck will be starting on Sunday against the Eagles.  I'm sure most of you waited to celebrate until it was official, and it now is.  Cam Cameron has confirmed John will start.  Cam said that "John has made tremendous progress in the last month" and that "John gives us the chance to win the football game."  Cam told his final decision to both players this morning.  Also, practice reps have been adjusted so that Beck is getting about 80% of the snaps rather than thr 50/50 split.  When asked what will be asked of Beck, Cam said "Number one: take care of the football."  He then went on to say that he will just ask John to "play the best football he can play."

Cam was asked at one point about when he decided to start John.  Cam replied by saying, "You just sense a guy growing.  You've been there and seen it before...you sense when he's getting that command."  Cam continued on to say that he "was leaning this direction since the [Buffalo] game was over."  Cam was also asked about how much of the offense Beck will be prepared to run.  Cam said, "There's nothing mentally that you would have to scale back for John Beck."  In fact, John will have the ability to even make audibles at the line of scrimmage.  When asked if the offense can do things with John that they couldn't do with Cleo Lemon, Cam simply replied, "I think we'll find out."  Could that mean some more deep balls?  I certainly hope so.

One interesting thing that was discussed towards the end was the last time we saw Beck take a snap in a game, it was the New Orleans game back in the preseason.  John didn't look especially sharp in that game.  But Cam quickly defended his quarterback, saying that he's grown a lot since then and brought up the fact that most of the players John was out there with are no longer with the team.

As for the Ricky Willians situation, Cam didn't exactly say much, which was to be expected. He did tell us that he and Ricky will meet for the first time tomorrow. Cam brought up the fact that he feels it's important to do this meeting face to face and "look each other in the eye." I would definitely agree with that. Cam made the point that Ricky doesn't know anything of his or the team's philosophy. I know it sounds lame to us, but to coaches, that's a big deal. Cam said, "I want to see where he is and let him know where we're headed." Man, I wish I could be in on this conversation. I'd love to know where we're headed as well!!

Be sure to vote in the new poll to the right about what you want Cam to do with Ricky.

And as always, your thoughts below on this eventful Wednesday afternoon...

I am very happy!
I now have a good reason to watch the game this weekend!  Even if they don't win, I will enjoy seeing what Beck can do and thinking about next year. :)

I about wet my pants!....
Can't wait to see how Beck peforms on the big stage.  I went to the BYU games and this guy improved every year, I think we'll be hearing some good things about the phins in the very near future.  Only bad thing is that the game is 3 days and 21 hours away!!

Check this out.....
Article on ESPN about Beck starting, Ricky reinstated, and Cameron's decision making.

It basically says Cam's a knob.

Finally, a breath excitement
Wow, I came into this late today as I've been busy at work, but I stop in just to see how the press conference went and there is tons of news.  This is what we all needed as fans: something to get excited about!  And to top it off our pot smoking buddist is back in the league?  You've got to be kidding me!  Here's to the new era beginning in Dolphinland!  Beck to Ginn.

Prediction: Ricky does the right things and we end up trading him to the Oakland Raiders during the offseason for a 5th rounder.

I think they should play Ricky, but
if you want to know what Cam and company will do..
Just poll the fan base, find out what the majority of fans would like to see happen, and then bet that Cam will do the opposite.

I would love to see Ricky play the last few games behind our new O line.  Along with Chatman, Beck, and Ginn, it could be really fun to watch.

I'm excited to think that
with the Lemon tree put in the garage and Beck starting...

The dolphins might throw and even complete a pass more than 10 yards downfield

Lemons and Becks

Limes and Coronas?

How special
is that, for a rookie QB!? No one will regret this move. My guess is that Beck finishes this year nicely, making the Dolphins 6-10.
In 2008, he'll put up big numbers and in 2009 he'll be signing a new contract with Tony Romo type money.
A great many of you will laugh and think I'm nuts. But I've seen what he can do and how opponents have underestimated him and lost the game. He's smart, accurate, uses risk management and improves every year. I think Philly will be shocked. But what do I know? I'm just a fan.
Let the good time roll.............

NICELY?
if the fins wind up 6-10, beck will given number 13 to wear, and the keys to wayne's jet.

a 3-4 finish would nice. even 2-5.

but to finish 6-1 would be mind blowing. that said-- i hope you are right my friend.

Feet on the ground, please.
We don't have the talent to finish 6-10, whether John Beck starts or not.  We're a bad football team, not just a bad QB.  The defense is a cobbled together mess that has shown up twice all season, the special teams are horrible, we don't have a single proven receiver, and we still commit a ton of penalties.  And all that's beside the fact that we're starting a rookie at QB.

The lone bright spot is the running game.  Well that and the fact that we now have an experienced backup QB. :)

A running game isn't nothing.  I'm not trying to be Urbino McBuzzkill.  I'm just trying keep the expectations reasonable.  And 6-10 is not reasonable.

by urbino on Nov 14, 2007 4:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree! That's not reasonable.
I am thinking more like we can run the table and go 7-9.

It's On, Now
As others have said: finally.  Now this season gets interesting.

Cam brought up the fact that he feels it's important to do this meeting face to face and "look each other in the eye."

Yeah, the eyes do tend to be a good way to tell when somebody's high.

More seriously, the Dolphins look to be in a no-win situation (no pun intended) with Ricky.  I don't see how anybody could possibly justify keeping him, but I don't think we'll be able to get anything for him, either.  He's a white elephant.

by urbino on Nov 14, 2007 4:03 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Cam was also asked ...
bout how much of the offense Beck will be prepared to run.  Cam said, "There's nothing mentally that you would have to scale back for John Beck."  In fact, John will have the ability to even make audibles at the line of scrimmage.

Now that sounds like a QB ready to play in the NFL!

I think we're going to see some good things from John Beck over the next 7 weeks. Things that might make us feel pretty good about where the QB situation is going.

You have to play Ricky...
I think everyone knows he has talent, but Wanny and Co. did such a wonderful job of trading away our future to get him, you need to play him, show he still has something in the tank and has trade value.  Or if you can trade him to the Packers or someone like that immediately for some draft picks, do it and move on.

If they just dump him, THAT would be a stupid move.  He will be gobbled up by the Pats so quickly.

I could care less what the fins record is from here in, just hoping Beck turns out to be the real-deal.  With the running game clicking and the O-Line playing like they are, ANY threat to throw the ball down the field should really open things up... (As opposed to check-down Cleo.)

Personally, I would have started him last week AT HOME versus Buffalo and ease him into things.  Nothing like being thrown to the fire.  But then again, he was going to have to play there this week anyway, so...

Newsflash...
the trade deadline passed weeks ago.

by Natalya on Nov 14, 2007 4:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Good point about the trade deadline...
Regardless, they need to put him on the field and let him audition for trade possibilities. (More my point)

One good point from CC's news conference is that his decision is that Beck will be the starter from here out.

Lets see if he is the future or not.

Definition of Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results...

by azphinner on Nov 14, 2007 4:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely...
you play Ricky Williams.

All these past few weeks they were playing Leo Lemon because he supposedly them the best chance to win.

Well, Ricky Williams, at RB, gives the dolphins a better chance to win than just Chatman.

by Natalya on Nov 14, 2007 4:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Play him, but for trade value.
I'm not so sure Ricky gives the team a better chance to win that Chatman.  He's been away from football for almost 2 years.

Regardless, I think you play him for the same reason you play Beck: not for this year, but for next year.  If Ricky can play, he needs to demonstrate it on the field so he's got better trade value this off-season.  We need draft picks.

by urbino on Nov 14, 2007 5:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Hopefully we...
steal a game here sometime and get a W. Although as long as Beck is playing and progressing little by little, then whether we win or don't win is fine by me.

next home game
I wanna hear some Ricky! Ricky! Ricky! chants, maybe that will convince Cam to play him. ... It worked with Beck!

A Beck Question
Maybe this has already been asked and answered somewhere and I just missed it, but has anybody heard anything from the other players about who they'd like to have starting at QB?

If Beck's a guy who's won their respect in practice, a guy they see as a leader, then that bodes well for him as a starter.  Everybody's level of play could elevate.

I haven't heard anything either way from the players.  (If they don't have strong feelings about Beck, of course, that's not necessarily a bad sign.  He's a rookie, fer cryin' out loud. Just wonderin' if he's already won them over.)

AND THAT'S IT!!! I WANT THE 1ST PICK IN THE DRAF!!

1st Pick Of The Draft
Why? Why do you & others want the first pick? I'm not trying to slam you or question what you want, I just continue to see people write that on this site. Again I understand that you want a chance to take the best player, but who? Is there someone that you really want next year?
Matt

by Matt27 on Nov 14, 2007 4:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, Matt Dorsey...
So that this defense will actually have an anchor and not be swiss cheese against the run.

by Natalya on Nov 14, 2007 4:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Glenn Dorsey, not Matt.
Personally, I'm more interested in having the highest draft pick possible simply because it's more valuable.  If you need somebody who's going to get picked high, it's obviously more valuable for that.  If you don't, it has more trade value.  The higher the pick, the more lower picks you can get for it.

It just gives you more options.  And when you have as many needs as the Dolphins do, you need all the options you can get.

by urbino on Nov 14, 2007 5:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes you are...
right, it's Glenn not Matt.

The ideal scenario might be for the dolphins to be able to move out of that top slot and pick up some more choices.

Still that's really hard of late because of the huge amount of money a top 10 pick makes, plus what other teams would have to give up for that selection. I've noticed far less movement (wheeling & dealing) in the top 10 picks of the draft the last several years.

by Natalya on Nov 14, 2007 5:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

True.
Probably nobody's gonna go for the Herschel Walker deal again, but one can still easily imagine, say, 3-way trade scenarios where we end up with a nice number of picks but the costs for our high spot are diffused across a couple of different teams.

by urbino on Nov 14, 2007 5:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Closer To Home
Probably nobody's gonna go for the Herschel Walker deal again . . . or, heh, the original Ricky Williams deal.  Can we get Mike Ditka hired somewhere during the off-season?

by urbino on Nov 14, 2007 5:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The league
has really changed since the first day's of JJ's coaching career in Dallas. I think JJ more or less popularized the whole draft chart with specific value for a pick (ie...1000 points for pick X, etc).

That deal he pulled really opened eyes, ok, ok, well except for the Dolphins!

Now teams are a lot smarter plus the game has evolved. For one thing it is a pass-first league in addition to other trends emerging like having two RB's or by committee rather than one guy getting a zillion carries (LJ anybody?). Plus these days, most people in the NFL understand that RB is a position with limited longevity.

by Natalya on Nov 14, 2007 5:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yea
If we don't take Dorsey or a great LT/RT ( depending on what we want to do with Carey) I say trade down.
Matt

by Matt27 on Nov 14, 2007 5:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

But....
...having the first pick really kills your salary cap situation because of how much they get paid. And you got to deal with the whole hold-out situation (which we all know Wayne hates).

I'd prefer pick 2, 3, or 4 because the player is more signable and costs drastically less. Of course I'd love to have the #1 pick if we can trade down, but if we get stuck making the pick, I wouldn't be too excited (like some seem to be).

by Matty I on Nov 14, 2007 5:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It absolutely hammers...
your salary cap situation to get the #1 overall. Like I said, teams give piles of guaranteed money to players who haven't played a single snap.

I don't think Dorsey is a consensus #1 pick because of team's needs. If the Rams get the #1, then they probably go OL to replace Pace. The Raiders would likely pick someone on offense, maybe DeSean Jackson. And I don't know that Dorsey is a fit for the jet's 3-4 system, so maybe they'll take Howie Long's kid instead. So even if Miami doesn't pick first, they could still get Dorsey.

by Natalya on Nov 14, 2007 5:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

All True, But
Your points make it a closer call than it used to be, no doubt.  Nonetheless, I still favor having the #1 pick next year if we can get it, because: a) think we will be able to trade down and get good value for it, b) even if we can't, we can draft somebody we know some team further down the board desperately wants/needs, and then work a draft-day trade for picks, c) even if we can't do that and get "stuck" with a #1 pick, we'll at least be in an unusually good salary cap position to sign him, given the amount of room we have.

I'm not saying I'll be heartbroken if Beck comes in and we win enough games to drop behind STL and SF on the draft board.  I'm just saying, even giving your points due weight, I'd still rather have the top pick in '08.

by urbino on Nov 14, 2007 6:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

But ... But
There is some truth to the 1st pick being a salary cap hit, but that gets modified by position too. If the top pick is a lineman the number becomes smaller then a QB/RB type. Mario Williams for example...

However, picking first is much better due to the ability to pick first in the rounds 2-7. There is great value in those picks, and teams can easily trade up/down out of them, since they are the top talent spot in the cheaper round.

Back to Dorsey
I've been trying to find out if he can play NT in the 3-4. If he can't, I'm wondering if he can play DE in the 3-4. If we do take him and he can't ( or if he's just better suited to play DT in a 4-3) do we move back to a 4-3?
Matt

by Matt27 on Nov 14, 2007 5:00 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Good Question
I've got no idea what the answer is, but it's a good question.  Personally, I'm not committed to Dorsey.  I'm just not sure whether he's more valuable than what we could get with the additional picks if we traded down.  Maybe he is.  Your question is an important factor in making that determination.

by urbino on Nov 14, 2007 5:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Just to give you guys an idea...
Of what I'm talking about.

Here's some of the better 3-4 NT's height and weight compared to Dorsey.

Dorsey - 6'2 - 292

Traylor - 6'2 - 340

Hampton - 6'1 - 325

Wilfork - 6'2 - 325

Ferguson - 6'3 - 310

J. Williams - 6'3 - 348

As you can see he's pretty close. I'm sure with an NFL program they can get him where they want. Now the only question is can he actually play the "gap" in a 3-4.

Matt

by Matt27 on Nov 14, 2007 5:19 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

And...
would he still be able to perform at a high level, carrying 30-50 more pounds?  Would he become injury prone? . . .

Not everybody can add that much weight and still be productive.  I'm not saying Dorsey can't.  I'm just saying it's an unknown.

by urbino on Nov 14, 2007 5:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Also...
I just did a bit of researching and Dorsey seems to be a "one gap" DT. Meaning he would fit better in a 4-3 scheme. He does a good job of getting in the backfield and breaking the play up. Also, I read on Kipers site that he needs to get stronger at his base. (legs)
Matt

by Matt27 on Nov 14, 2007 5:32 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

How about this...
The dolphins get Dorsey with their first pick, an OT to play on the right side with one of their two second round picks, and a CB or safety with the other?

by Natalya on Nov 14, 2007 6:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sounds good, as far as it goes.
I'm not sure how it addresses Matt's question about Dorsey's suitability to play in a 3-4, though.

by urbino on Nov 14, 2007 6:15 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ok, here's my....
layperson answer to Dorsey & 3-4...

If that's the scheme you want to play him in then he's probably a better fit at DE in a 3-4 system given his size (less than 300lbs). Bear in mind he's a young guy still so he could be bigger but that's hard to say. Some can pack on a lot of weight others not so, it depends on his frame and build.

In a 4-3, it is a no brainer, he plays at tackle.

by Natalya on Nov 14, 2007 6:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Things to watch for
John Beck to  Derek Hagan. These two looked like they clicked very well together in pre-season. We will probaly see a bunch of check downs the first quarter but thats just until John gets comfortable behind center. I think we might finally see our whole team pumped up for this one. If the O-line gives John the time he needs then look for Cam to take a few deep shots to that 4.34 guy.. Whats his name? Ted Ginn. I only kid because we have not seen that this year. Completed or not it definatly gets the Eagles corners thinking and might get them to play a few yards off our speedy reciever. I am on the west coast so we get the Chargers game instead of the Fins. Looks like ill be on ESPN's game grid watching. yuk. All you guys posting are saying all the right things about giving John Beck time to grow. I will be checking the site to get updates from you. If you get to see the game in your area please post your thoughts as to what you see in John Beck.

for "How About This" Natalya
According to this web site for draft dreaming, Walter has the following: 1st Rd, Glen Dorsey, DT/2nd Rd, Gosder Cherilus, OT/2nd Rd, Chevis Jackson, CB/3rd Rd, Titus Brown, DE/OLB.
Though the names could be changed, Walter has the right positions. As you do too Natalya.
I'm soo excited about the possibilities for the now with Beck and for the draft in the future, that I'm jumping on and off the couch like a little kid.
And btw, everyone seems pretty positive over the news of Beck. Never, ever lose hope. But, like I said, we won't be disappointed with this kid. Here's something to maybe chew over the next games as we watch him play. Who does he more remind you of when he plays good? Current or past QB's included.
PS: Good to be with you all.....

We'll see how he does but...
beck was asked who he thought he compared to and the answer was...

"I think Jake Delhomme is awesome and I think I compare well to him both as a player and as a person. I would love to watch someone like him and learn behind him."

Some people have said Marc Bulger as well.

In either case, Beck strikes me as a better athlete than those guys.
