Trent Green: "He outweighs me by over 100 lbs. Where shld I blk him?"
Let me start this off by saying if you aren't reading Peter King's Monday Morning QB" column on SI.com each week, then you're just not that big of a football fan. It's loaded with great stuff every week and it's usually where I start out my weekly Monday reading around the internet. Really, it's great stuff. And no, I don't know King at all. But his thoughts and insight makes for some great reading.
So what does all this have to do with the Dolphins. Well King talks about, in the opening of his article, a text-messaging exchange he had with Trent Green on Sunday night. Here's how it went:
Green to King, 9:06 p.m.: "Will b ok. Not like lst yr. TG.''
King to Green: 9:08 p.m.: "hey -- how about johnson calling your block a malicious hit? feel better. peter.''
(And this is the one I found interesting.)
Green to King, 9:12 p.m.: "He outweighs me by over 100 lbs. Where shld I blk him? TG.''
And that's exactly right. Travis Johnson is a grade A asshole who clearly lacks any common sense or decency or class. You simply don't taunt a person who is lying motionless on the ground. Then you don't say the things Johnson said about Trent after the game.
But back to the question at hand. Was Trent's block "malicious"? I'd say no. Trent is right. Johnson outweighs Green by over 100 pounds. What was Trent supposed to do...hit him high? The bottom line, in my opinion, is that it isn't against the rules and therefore shouldn't be an issue. Somebody give Travis Johnson a tissue so he can stop crying and let's move on.
What do you guys think? Clean hit or dirty block?

worthless
about the block... I think it was a pointless block, the play was busted there was no way he was getting around the D at that point... he was trying to be the tough guy and he paid the price. big mistake. Cut blocks are considered dirty when they are done by Olineman, i think in this case its just as dirty as a Dlineman blocking a QB high on a INT return, or blocking the kicker/punter on a return. They are going to get smashed, its football. Its not that dirty.
I read that same piece by Peter King...
Anyway, here's my thought.
Is the hit legal? Strictly speaking, yes.
Should it be legal? Honestly I think not. Plenty of defensive players have suffered serious knee injuries due to these blocks. I can empathize with a player being upset about being hit that way. Unlike Green who has played 15 years and made bundles, most players have short careers and make far less.
THe taunting thing was stupid, but then this conversation is about the hit itself.
I bet a lot of fins fans would have been up and arms if say, last year someone had put a block like that on JT or Zach and ended their career or put them on IR for the season.
IMO, the rules need to be changed.
Travis Johnson
Speaking of Travis Johnson, the NFL has declined to levy a fine against him. PFT speculates that this means the NFL agrees with Johnson and the Texans.

Stop bagging on Travis Johnson
That probably meant know sense, but Travis Johnson didn't mean to hurt him. If someone tried to hit your private area and missed with their foot and hurt their foot really badly, you would probably laugh. Maybe even attack them back. Travis Johnson fortunately didn't attack back.
So if you knocked your brother...
The play itself doesn't bother me, as it wasn't Johnson's fault Green got hurt. But he shouldn't have taunted Green, who could have been lying there dead for he knew. That makes him a piece of shit. That, and the fact that he was calling Trent a coward and saying he had no respect for him and all that crap after the game.
Looks like I'm in the minority here...
I have seen the really dirty blocks where a guy launches himself at the side of another guy's knee and blows it out. I agree that this is just wrong.
However, most of these blocks are intended to slow down or trip the opposing player, and you see it all the time when a back is trying to block a pass rusher. And a good part of the time, the pass rusher can vault the block and keep going after the QB.
That's what I saw TG do. I saw him throw himself in the way of Johnson's pursuit, and if Johnson was a little more agile (or maybe paying attention) he probably could have avoided it without much difficulty. QBs aren't reaally known for their blocking prowess.
* I think TG showed a lot of fire by going after the big guy.
* I also think that Johnson was embarassed that he got blocked by a QB!
* Also, also, I agree with Matty. Johnson is a classless thug, and, at worst, will probably be one of the next guys to get popped for some illegal activity off field. At best, he is simply an @55H013.
