I want this one...

Earlier today, I was doing some thinking, as I often try to do at least once a week, and I came to this conclusion: I really want this game on Sunday against the Patriots. I want it really, really bad. I want it more than any other game that the Dolphins have played in so far this year. In fact, I think I want this one more than I've wanted any other game over the past 5 or so years.

Why? Well the obvious reason would be that, since the Dallas game, everyone is already starting to talk about New England going undefeated. But that's only part of the reason, and the smallest part at that. The main reason I really want this one is because of how classless of an organization the Patriots are and I want my team to be the one to kill their spirits and crush their undefeated season. Sure, they might go on to win the Super Bowl, but I want the Miami Dolphins to be the team that beat them and ruined their potentially perfect season.

So now you might be wondering why I'm calling the Patriots, the media's favorite team, classless. Sure, I could say it stems back to the "snow plow" game in the 80s. That was clearly cheating. I could also point to the fact that the Patriots grounds crew intentionally left the sprinklers on overnight at Foxboro the night before an AFC playoff game against the Colts (I believe it was the AFC title game, but am not 100% sure) in order to slow down Indy's great offense. That's also clearly cheating. I could also point to the fact that the NFL basically changed the rules about how to cover receivers, in large part, because of how the New England coaching staff was telling their players to grab and hold Indy's receivers all game long in another playoff game. I could even talk about how classless it was last year when some Patriot players were mocking the Shawne Merriman "lights out" dance on the field in San Diego following their lucky playoff win over the Chargers. And, of course, I could also point to the video taping crap that was exposed earlier this year.

Sure, all that shows that this organization has been classless for quite some time now. But none of that compares to how the Patriots are acting now. What am I talking about? I'm talking about a season long trend that really came to a fever pitch this past week at the end of the Cowboys game. I'm talking about how, with under a minute left, the Patriots just had to score another touchdown. They had to have Kyle Eckel run in a 1 yard touchdown with just 19 seconds left. They couldn't take a knee, could they? Nope. Instead, this team is intentionally running up the score. They are showing a lack of respect to their opponent and to the entire NFL by scoring pointless touchdowns late in the 4th quarter. It's these kinds of actions that really make it tough to watch professional sports at times. Is it against the rules? Of course not. But it's certainly one of those unwritten ethical rules that most coaches abide by. You don't show up your opponent. It's a pretty basic idea that you learn when you're a kid. I guess this team and this entire organization didn't get that memo.

So then, as I thought more about this upcoming game on Sunday, I asked myself this question: would I be willing to sacrifice every other game on the 2007 schedule in exchange for a win against the Patriots on Sunday? I wasn't sure, as that's a pretty big trade. But then I read this garbage by Bill Simmons and, at that point, I knew my answer. Yes, I would make that deal in a heartbeat. Why? Read the article and tell me you wouldn't make the same trade. Incase you don't want to read the entire article, this paragraph basically sums it up:

It's a two-word phrase that can't be printed on ESPN.com, but it's become the mantra of the 2007 Patriots season. Eff you. You can see it with every rubbing-it-in touchdown in the fourth quarter, as well as every "Get 'em a body bag ... YEAHHHHHHHHH!" reaction on the sidelines after it happens. You can see it with Brady's ticked-off game face that hasn't changed for five straight weeks. You can see it with Belichick's super-satisfied grin during the postgame handshake with the opposing coach -- especially with Wade Phillips, who made the fatal mistake of taking a shot at the Pats this week, when Belichick looked liked he was dying to tell him, "Man, imagine what the score could have been had if we were allowed to videotape your terrible coaching signals!"

And it's this kind of crap that needs to end. When a national sports writer, who also happens to be a Patriot fan, writes this kind of trash that is basically encouraging this unsportsmanlike and classless behavior, how can you not want to sacrifice every game this season for the chance to wipe that smug smile off of every player on that team and every fan of that team? And you know, not to get on Simmons too much, but he made one pretty bad comparison in his article. He compared the Pats to the Yankees, saying how the Patriots are turning into the most hated team in the sport. Well, yes, they are. But it's not because of what they are accomplishing. Instead, it's about how they are going about handling themselves while accomplishing it. The Yankees, to their credit, have been just about the most professional champions I've ever seen. They're all class. In my opinion, the Yankees should never, ever be grouped together with the likes of the Patriots. That's an insult to Joe Torre and every Yankee that has worn the pinstrip uniform during Torre's reign as manager.

If you're a Dolphins fan and you just read all that and you still don't want this game as badly as I do, I offer you this last excerpt from Bill Simmons:

We haven't seen anything like this with professional sports in a while. When Dallas took the lead in the third quarter Sunday, the thing that amazed me wasn't that it happened, but how assured I was the Patriots would immediately answer with a score. There was no doubt in my mind.

Now would you make that deal? Wouldn't it be worth going 1-15 just to see the looks on the New England fans' faces? Wouldn't you want to e-mail Bill Simmons just to say, "No, no. Eff you!" Wouldn't you want to be able to sit back on Sunday night and just imagine how pissed off Bill Belichick would be? I know I do. And I want to be able to watch all the highlight shows on Sunday and Monday and hear what all of the Tom Brady ass-kissing media personalities have to say about our beloved but struggling Dolphins pulling off the upset of all upsets!

To me, winning this game on Sunday is the closest that Dolphin fans might get to feeling the satisfaction of a World Championship for a long time. And damn it, I want that feeling. I want this one badly...

Let's give the Pats a Dirty Sanchez
JT, four sacks and two forced fumbles
Ginn, breakout game of 120+yds
Ronnie, 200 total yds
Porter, an int returned for a TD

This is my fantasy!

Standord at USC
The Fins know how to beat the Pats.  Let's create the biggest upset of the year in the NFL.

I've been saying for years
what a wank Bill Simmons is. He's been puling this crap forever. He's a glorified blogger who happens to write for the WWL and all he writes about are the Sox, Pats and Celtics. His jokes are recycled crap from the Jimmy Kimmel show, he's a horrible, horrible NBA draft predictor (and never admits it when he's dead wrong). He's a smug insufferable prick and that pretty much describes every sports fans in the greater New England area.

(By the way, Roger Clemens throwing a broken piece of bat at Mike Piazza, A-Rod slapping the ball out of Bronson Aroyo's hand, A-Rod screaming "Mine!" during that Toronto game to distract the Jays' 3rd baseman, Joba Chamberlain screaming like a jack-ass fan during a Jeter homerun at Fenway, George Steinbrenner whining and throwing his classy manager under the bus every single time they get eliminated, etc. .. yea, gotta disagree with you on that one Matt.)

Go Fins!!!

yeah....
... and don't forget what they're doing to Joe Torre right now. I think that guy is full of class, but the organization as a whole certainly isn't.

Pride!!!
That's what it will come down to this weekend. I have a feeling. This will be like the bears game last year.

Lets Get Real
The fish will not be able to compete with the Patriots this Sunday... just ain't gonna happen. Simply put, your team sucks. The Dolphins are down and not about to get up for quite some time. But take heart... If you hire a skilled GM and find a decent coach and draft? a top flight quarterback - you may get back to a winning season in 4 or 5 years. In 5 or 6 years you may actually become a contender for the division! Miami had their time at the top of the heap back in the 70's, you won a couple of S/B's. Your hatred of New England is based in the repressed distain you hold for the current edition of the fins. Try this on Sunday... sit back and admire the football prowess of the N.E. Patriots, their play has been elevated to an artform. Try not to whine about phantom cheating and the score run-up crap, it only will only distract you from the enjoyment of watching the finest football team in the NFL. My score: Pats 35  Fish 6

Typical Miami retort
After reading the hate-filled paragraphs you penned above, I find your skin gets a bit thin when it comes to taking what you dish out.  Come on Matty, grow up.

Well...
...it's not a Miami retort because I'm not from Miami. And I spent 4 years of my life in New England at college and your comments are examples of exactly how the typical Boston sports fan acts. That's how they are.

Thank you for proving me right. Have a lovely life.

Also...
...feel free to try and defend any of the facts I point out above. Did they not water down the field before a playoff game against Indy? Were the rules not changed (or how they were inforced changed) following the raping of Indy receivers by NE defensive backs? Was the snow play game not against the rules? And did they not videotape opponents defensive signals?

by Matty I on Oct 18, 2007 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not to nitpick while you're on such a roll...
but if the rules had to be changed (or reinterpreted) after the playoff game  vs indy, doesnt that sort of imply that what the pats db's did in the game (at least at that point in time) was legal or at least tacitly legal. I dont know if you're much of a sports historian (doesnt sound like it), but the rules of college lacrosse had to be changed after jim brown because he was such a dominant player in order to preserve competitive balance. MLB decided to lower the pitching mound after bob gibson's 1968 season (1.12 era!!!). It doent mean that what they were doing was dirty at the time. Rules are not retroactive.

by mulagatani on Oct 18, 2007 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

O.K.
I don't know where you got the watering thing, sounds like a Indy conspiracy to me. I notice you failed to mention that Indy f'd with the air conditioning system in the Dome for our last playoff visit there. I mean let's be fair. I will agree that Indy did cry to the league about the too-tough N.E. defenders and yes the NFL capitculated to their whining and invented the five-yard chuck rule. For a Pats fan, this does not garner any respect for Manning. The snowplow guy was funny and yes it probably helped the fieldgoal kicker (I will discount this event thought 'cause you were beating us regularly back then and it was nice to get a win) The taping of defensive signals thing is the biggest joke - explain to me the competitive advantage gained by a camera on the field? Lay it out for me. They tape in the booths all game long.. its legal, so where's the advantage of a fuzzy video tape at field level? If you figure it out, please let the Dolphins in on it, 'cause your defense sucks. You know what's really cool... Mangini hasn't won a game since he tried to derail his old coach. Fitting...

by TruePatsFan on Oct 18, 2007 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's not that
the video taping gives anyone an advantage or not. It's the fact that it's both illegal and shady, which just proves that Belichick is a classless jack ass (although we needed no more proof of that the way he acted after Indy shoved it up his ass in last year's AFC Championship). Which was the point Matty was making.

by The Dude on Oct 18, 2007 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dude...
Ohhhhhh.... I missed that point. Matty is so hatefull because he desires a well mannered coach. Oh!!!

Great, you Dolphin fans should be on the lookout for a real nice coach, winning obviously is not a priority with you folks. Me... I'll take the best (but not well mannered) football coach in the world.

Not the point, braniac. Far from it.

But how can I expect anything more?

PatsFan
Where are you getting his "hatred" thing from? I never said I "hate" the Patriots. What I am saying is that they don't have any class or respect for the league nor the game of football itself. It's these types of acts that, at times, make me really hate professional sports. And when the best team in the NFL (yes, I do think they are the best, but the Colts are a close 2nd) are doing these types of disrespectful and unsportsmanlike things, it's disheartening as a general fan of the sport, which I am despite my love of the Dolphins. If the Dolphins were pulling this shady crap, I'd be very disappointed in them and have trouble rooting for them, at least for some time or until the rule breaker was no longer with the organization. To me, no one team is bigger than the sport itself. In this case, the Patriots are a black eye for the league and they took no action against Belichick for the shady and illegal crap he was pulling, which is a terrible example to set. Bob Kraft's ethics and morality really need to be questioned here.

by Matty I on Oct 18, 2007 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Matty...
Hey... you know and I know that if the Patriots were 0-6 there would not be the hue & cry from all these fair-play people around the league. ..just wouldn't. The reason that Belichick has been vilified is due to the fact that he wins, that his team seems unbeatable and this elicits an envious response from a lot of football types around the country. The integrity of the league is not in jeopardy... believe me. The Patriots domination of this football decade, bothers people... people who root for other teams. As a Pats fan I realize I am living in the golden age of the New England Patriots and man it feels good.

Your Welcome
You know what.. winning changes everything. I say -  move back to Massachusetts and give up on that loser outfit and cheer on a real football team. On second thought.. stay put and wait on the hapless Dolphins. You deserve them.

no doubt
"..... winning changes everything...."

I bet it changed you from a Cowboy fan to a Pats' fan.

The funny thing is that real TruePatsFans just live in the moment and realize they're lucky for having a great football team to root for. They struggled back in the days of Shaeffer/Sullivan/Foxboro Stadium going to a see teams quarterbacked by such "legends" as Tony Eason, Hugh Millen, and Tommy Hodson. They paid some convenience store parking attendant on route 1 ten bucks for the chance to walk a mile and a half to get to the stadium. They remember the crappy turf that once was responsible for their best three defensive players going on the IR after the last pre-season game one season.

In other words, they aren't a--holes like you because they EARNED it. You know, because they are just happy that, after all of those years busting their butts turning over a good slice of their paycheck for season tickets only to see a 4-12 team going through the motions, they FINALLY have a winner to root for.

And what kills me is that its my home state. I'm a die-hard Sox and Celts' fan who just happened to become a Marino fan before I could really call myself a football fan in general. If this were 5 years ago I'd be offended that there's so much anti-Boston talk on this site, but now I can't because the analysis is dead on. I live in Arlington, Virginia now and just the other morning at brunch I saw some toolshed with a "Jeter drinks wine coolers" shirt on... I mean who let this jackass out of Boston? who?... you should need a passport of something to leave so that guys like that can never sully the reputation of Boston fans for the rest of us. It makes me want to puke.

35-32 Phins
And one more prediction - Brady whines again that we 'stole' his audibles, leading to 7 sacks.

How funny was that whining in retrospect after we learned the Pats tape signals and cheat to win?

Enjoy the game, douche!

I want this game as well....
I was actually saying the same thing to my coworkers.  If there was one game that I want this season, it's this game coming up.  I hate the Pats and I hate how the media is giving them a bj right now.  Its so annoying.  I hope JT rips Brady head right off...

Anyways, I'm just venting.  Its going to be near impossible for the Dolphins to win this Sunday.  The Pats passing attack is way too good.  And for some reason, I don't have much confidence in Lemon scoring putting up points for us.

If the Dolphins can't win this Sunday, I am praying that they'll win the following Sunday.  I live in Jersey, and these Giants fans are making me sick...

ALCS
I only wish the BoSox ran their organization as well as the N.E. Patriots. The Sox did win their division though... something the Dolphins won't do for years to come. But hey... the fish have a good chance to break the NFL record for most consecutive losses. Now there's something to root for.

What's the big deal?
If people don't like ESPN or Bill Simmons or whomever, then don't read/visit. There are a million opinions out there which suit darn near any and all points of view. Besides, are folks so distressed that others have different opinions?

No matter the score on Sunday, I still have to get up and clock in for the 9-6 drudgery so it isn't quite that important to me.

I have a lot of you down here in Puerto Rico, i call them FREE AGENTS FANS!! I bet you don't have a NE jersey from the 80's or 90's, the old one with the gay, sorry, the guy making a snap.
You are laughtfing at the Dolphins now, but you don't know anything about what Matt was trying to point out. He wasn't talking about a TEAM in particular, he was talking about THE GAME OF FOOTBALL. If you, FakePatsFan, have a kid(hopefully is yours) playing in any kids league, you would not like the kids to behaive like idiots cause they are winning. Responsible people teach basic values, like respect to your oponent, to yourself and for the league for that matter. Cheating is cheating no matter how you puyt it. It seen that those thing look to be HUGE words for you to understand. Hopefully you will have enough money to buy a new jersey went other team became a Dinasty. How many jerseis do you own now? one from the 49's, from the 80's(Montana), Cowboys, from the 90's(Aikman), Maybe one from the Broncos 90's(Elway) Keep bouncing around on every team that is on the top. Obviously you are not a TRUE fan of the patsies nor the NFL. GO DOLPHINS!!
I will see the Dolphins win a SUPER BOWL before i die(20 years and counting)

Pats at Dolphins
I think Brown is going to have a big game. Big enough to win on the running game alone? Not enough. I always want a Dolphins win against the Pats in a big way (next to the Jets)and that goes back to the snow plow incident which was cheating. Truth is the Pats have lots of veteran talent. Some key players are questionable or out for the Pats today though. Morris out, Maroney questionable, Brady with a sore shoulder although he had a full practice. We can exploit these things. The defense will win or lose this game for us I think. We need to focus on the Pats receivers to win I think. We'll see what happens there. I think even without Chambers, Lemmon may be gelling with the receivers a little better this week and the running and passing game together will put points on the board. Miami could pull it out if the coaching/play calling is on track. The final score? I think Miami can score as high as 34. The pats score? That depends on our pass defense. I have no clue there but I'm hoping. It would be a very, very,, sweet win!!!
