**BREAKING NEWS: CHRIS CHAMBERS TRADED TO SAN DIEGO**

FOX Sports, as well as ESPNews, is now reporting that Chris Chambers has been traded to the San Diego Chargers.  It is believed that the deal is for a 2nd round draft pick.

Hat tip to "Malachi V" for posting info about the trade about 5 minutes before I got this one up.

My initial thoughts, without having time to digest this move, is that I'm excited to see Ted Ginn get more playing time.  Perhaps he'll even be a starter.  As for the deal itself, I guess a 2nd round pick is fair.  I said in my post earlier that I wouldn't give up Chambers for anything less than a 2nd round pick.  I need to be careful for what I wish for, I suppose.

More reaction to come in this very post.

Your thoughts below...

**UPDATE**: The Sun-Sentinel is also now reporting this deal. Also, the FOX Sports article says that Chambers himself confirmed the deal but made no further comment because he wants to speak with Cam and Randy first. I'm actually quite interested to see how Chambers feels. He's going to a team with playoff and Super Bowl aspirations but is leaving a team that he's spent his whole career with and was likely having a good time with Ted Ginn, helping him get accustomed to the NFL life. Also, I've come to the realization that Cam and Randy love them some 2nd round picks. They've both always said, even last year, they like having a lot of picks because they can either bring in many young players or use the picks to move up in the draft to grab a player they really like but who might not fall to them. Yet again in the '08 offseason, flexibility will be a word we hear thrown around a lot as the draft nears in April.

**UPDATE #2**: Some of you asked about the salary cap effect of this for the 08 and 09 seasons. Here's the deal. The Dolphins are off the hook for $5.1 million base salary in 08 and his $4.55 million base salary in 09. They do owe him his prorated bonus money for those 2 seasons, which totals $3.834 million ($1.917 mill per season). The Dolphins can choose to divide that up over those 2 years or take the full hit in 2008. Either way, some decent money was saved.

**UPDATE #3**: And now the trade's been officially announced on the team's official website. And here are the first set of comments from the Dolphins, courtesy of Randy Mueller:

"We want to thank Chris for his contributions during his tenure with the Dolphins. This trade will give some of our younger players at that position, such as Ted Ginn and Derek Hagan, more of an opportunity this year. Chris did everything we asked of him and represented this organization in a first-class manner. We wish him and his family the best of luck in San Diego."

**UPDATE #4**: I'm just sitting here now and wondering how this trade might adversely affect Ronnie Brown and the great year he's trading. How many teams are going to worry about Cleo Lemon (or John Beck if he gets a shot) and this group of receivers led by Marty Booker, Derek Hagan, and Ted Ginn? Yards are going to get even tougher to come by for Ronnie. Also, who comes in as the 4th WR? Is it Greg Camarillo? Does Kerry Reed get signed from the practice squad? Personally, I'd like to see Reed get signed and see some action, with Camarillo remaining as the team's 5th receiver. I think Reed has something to offer in this league.

**UPDATE #5**: I just got a poll up about the trade. Be sure to vote in it, as I'm very interested in seeing how the general Dolphins fanbase feels about this move.

**UPDATE #6: DARIUS CUT**: In a move that's been overlooked so far today, the Dolphins cut safety Donovin Darius today. This is certainly interesting if you ask me. We all saw how poorly Cameron Worrell played in coverage, though he did support the run fairly well. Perhaps the Dolphins are preparing to let Jason Allen start? Could it be that the team has decided to see what, if anything, Allen brings to the table. He's been in this defense for almost a year and a half, so it's time. I guess this front office and coaching staff have finally decided it's time to look towards the future. That's certainly good news!

WOW...
I hope this isn't the beginning of the end for some others. In my opinion I love Chrissy but so many drops! I hope he gets things going and turns into what he was suppose to be. I wish he would have went to the NFC. 2nd round pick next year though.

The test
If you recall in the game, they were calling a lot of deep throws to Chambers... testing him out.  They obviously felt like they needed to move on.

Chambers was a cry baby.  Always blaming the defender for pass interference.  Go get the friggin ball seven million dollar man!

From Neos blog...
Good move...

I think this is a good move by the Dolphins and credit to their staff for making it. Chambers is 29 and meanwhile the Dolphins are 0-6. By the time this ship gets righted, he is looking at being 30+.

That also tells me the fins think Ginn is ready for more action. So I'm all for putting him in there and getting him more touches. That's why you draft a guy #9, to be your playmaker.

I also agree with Neo about trying to move at least one of the veterans on defense, (though not all necessarily), whether JT, or ZT, or KT.

The deadline was at 3pm today..
...so there aren't going to be any more deals, meaning if you're hopingfor a trade of either JT or Zach (or both), it isn't happening anytime soon.

WRONG!!
I'm an ass, huh?  The deadline is at 4pm eastern, so we still got about a half hour.  At this point, I wouldn't be shocked by anything.

by Matty I on Oct 16, 2007 3:32 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

mixed feelings...
I have always liked Chris Chambers, but I'm on the same page with Matt about the drops.  Chambers is a solid no. 2 receiver.

Let's just hope the Chargers struggle, like they did to begin the season so the 2nd rounder doesn't turn into a late 2nd rounder.  Does anybody know how much  money this saves on the cap next season?

I said this on the side blog
Underachieving WR, was suprised we could get a 2nd rder for him. This clearly opens the door for Ginn to get into the starting lineup. Also I hope this is the beginning of the younger talent getting more playing time to see what we have.

Disappointed we didn't trade JT, Zach, or even get rid of Porter. I love JT, Zach, but hey lets give something back to them. They have given their everything to the Fins. Give them a shot at a ring. Get a little something in trade value and let them go.

The season is lost, let the purging begin so we won't have to suffer the same fate next year. This is the 1st move I liked by Cam in a long time.

Spot-on...
about the season being lost (in terms of any hope of playoffs, etc) and it being the first move I've liked from this staff in a while.

Who knows, maybe they'll actually start John Beck in a few weeks?!

by Natalya on Oct 16, 2007 3:51 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Beck
November 11, at home, against Buffalo, after the bye week.

John Beck will be starting that game. I guarantee it.

Right on Neo...
I've ALWAYS said Chambers was overrated. The timing is curious but hey, a 2nd round pick for him... not too shabby. Of course, the Members of The Jack-Ass Knee-Jerk Dolfans are going to have one more reason to bitch about Mueller and Cam....

Yup
"Members of The Jack-Ass Knee-Jerk Dolfans are going to have one more reason to bitch about Mueller and Cam"

You're exactly right!  And those are the Dolphin fans that I can't tolerate!!

great point
I love that Cam and Randy don't make moves just to assuage the loudest fans out there. This year's been tough, but I'm happy they're guiding the ship.

2nd Rounder
Give it up to Cam and Randy getting a 2nd round pick for Chambers. I do worry a little about Hagan. He seems like Chris Chambers version 2.0

My question about Zach & Jason... What if they don't want to be traded? I'm glad they're not going anywhere. I do understand what you guys mean when you say they want to get a chance to play on a winning team late in their careers, but I admire them sticking with us through thick and thin. That's why they'll be remembered by Dolphin fans forever. Just like Marino.

Hagan - Chambers 2.0?
Well that wouldn't be so bad, if Hagan were to evolve into the #2 or #3 guy right? Granted the dropped passes really bite...

Plus Hagan is costing the dolphins less than $1M per year as I recall vis-a-vis the $5M+ that Chambers was.

Chambers
Making 7 Mill this year. The more I think about it... Damn that's alot of money for him to be making.

Lorenzo?
Any thoughts on using Lorenzo Booker as a slot receiver now?

by kcorona4 on Oct 16, 2007 5:25 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Trade affect on Ronnie?
NONE. Come on, since when has anyone worried about the Fins passing attack? Since Marino retired its ALWAYS been shut down the running game. His last 3 games, Chambers had 2 catches for 21 yds against Oakland. 2 catches for 19 yds against Houston, and a very average game of 6 cathes of 73 yards against Cleveland.

I don't think those are numbers that can't easily be replaced with any receiver on any given day.

On a side note it looks like Trent Green is gonna be fine, with no side affects whatsoever. Thank God, but this is what Trent had to say earlier..

Dolphins quarterback Trent Green said Monday during a radio interview (560-WQAM) that if the results of the neurological tests regarding his Grade 3 concussion continue to be, "normal,'' that he intends to play football again this season.

I had really hoped that this concussion would had open his eyes to retire. Some players just don't know when to walk away.

This trade has got to send the final message to Trent that the team is moving foward to a rebuilding stage. I hope that Trent doesn't put Cam in a position to try to play him when its clearly not good for his and the future of this franchise.

Sad day
Well, I for one will miss Chambers.  As inconsistent as he was, he was a human highlight reel just as much.  I've been a huge fan since his rookie season.  He was exactly what every receiver should be; the exact opposite of what many are.  Gifted but humble.  While the trade will ultimately help Miami in the long run, I hate to see Chambers go.  Here's hoping that Cam and Randy turn that pick into something great.  Best of luck to Chambers in SD, I'm sure he's going to help Rivers quite a bit.

by Gliddog on Oct 16, 2007 5:42 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Amen to that!!
I loved Chris just as much as the next guy.  I thought he was a talented WR who just never got consistent QB play.  It's a shame to see him go, but it was a trade that will benefit us in the future.

by Matty I on Oct 16, 2007 5:56 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Finally --
It took six games for the front office to realize they had a mess on their hands? They should have done this trade six months ago. Please, gut the rest of this team and build with an eye towards the future.

The most frustrating thing in all of this is the repeated lack of vision Huizenga and the goons he hires all have. Trade Taylor, Zack, and anyone else on this team that will net you a high draft pick and move on. Of course, we have to rely on these same people to actually pick decent players with these draft picks, and quite frankly, I'm not so sure they have any capacity to do so.

No worries there, Oz...
Randy Mueller has a great draft track record throughout his career. This past April, the Dolphins had one of their best drafts in a long, long time. The amount of rookies that were kept after the roster cut deadline is one of the best in franchise history and the most in the NFL this season. Mueller turned the Wes Welker trade into Samson Satele, who has been one of, if not THE, key factor in turning a once crappy offensive line into a very solid unit.

We'll be fine. We have the right guys in the front office. No doubt about that.

by The Dude on Oct 16, 2007 6:12 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Let's hope so...
I'm definitely giving Mueller and Cam a pass this year no matter what happens. It's tough enough to build a winner through time, much less through 1 draft and six games. I love some of the things Cam is doing with the play calling--for once, the phins aren't playing scared. However, time will tell what their legacy will be-it's too soon to judge. Let's give them some time and see what they come up with.

Excellent point about the Raiders only getting a 4th for Moss while the Dolphins were able to sneak out a 2nd. The media has completely glossed over that fact.

Good move

I recall when the Dolphins brought in Dan Marino to start... about five or six veteran players were replaced by rookies or 2nd-year players as QB David Woodley was benched and Dan Marino began his HOF career.  Half the offense was benched.

It is my belief this trade backs the "theory" the Dolphin coaching staff is getting ready to introduce John Beck as the starting QB - and the WR corp he has been working-out with (Hagan & Ginn).  I see John Beck starting soon, perhaps after the bye-week...

So, instead of benching the multi-talented Chris Chambers, the Dolphin staff traded him.  There are many maybes but the bottom line is Chris Chambers is now with San Diego.

I feel sad seeing Chris Chambers go elsewhere.  I am glad the team got a 2nd round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft - and I think Chambers will like playing in San Diego with Phil Rivers at QB.

Overall, I see this being a good move for the Dolphins.

Just my observations... and opinion.

by NumberOneFan on Oct 16, 2007 5:59 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Your theory...
about the coaches prepping things for Beck makes sense. At least, that's what I hope they do.

I'm glad they made this move, realizing that at 0-6, what do they have to lose by stocking up picks?

by Natalya on Oct 16, 2007 6:27 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Timing is everything
The Raiders get a 4th rounder for Randy Moss

The Dolphins get a 2nd rounder for Chris Chambers

I hate seeing Chambers go, but I also hate a lot of things about this season.... this was a great trade for this organization

by DCDolphin on Oct 16, 2007 6:16 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nice point
I like on Sportscenter they were asking the question "Did the Chargers get a steal?" Are you kiddin me? A steal is what the Pats got, a 4th rounder for Moss. Lets let this soak in for a minute...the Raiders only got a 4th rounder for Moss and we get a 2nd rounder for Chambers (doesn't matter if it is down in the round). The only team that got robbed was the Chargers, Mueller did great making this trade happen.

I no longer watch SportsCenter.

Its a win-win trade
San Deigo gets a talented yet under achieving WR
The Fins save money and get a high pick.

chambers
He was originally a 2nd round pick. We've come full circle, and he hasnt lost any value. I always thought Chambers made the spectacular catch but dropped way to many easy ones and never really had that breakaway capability. I think its a solid trade. He might have lost a step, and Ginn needs to be the X receiver in this offense. I'm just worried about Ginn's ability to go up and grab one in traffic, I think that'll be his limiting factor to stardom.

Kerry Reed?
Any news yet if we have found a 5th receiver?  I personally would like to see Kerry Reed brought up from the practice squad.  he did well during the preseason and developed good chemistry with John Beck.  Worth a shot to see what he's got.

YUP, I SEE THE FUTURE, (and I like it)
First off, "Good luck & best wishes to Chris Chambers." No, he wasn't automatic....but he had his share of circuis catches, and always a classy guy.

That said, "Let the youth movement take another step forward!" After camp, I thought the trio of Beck, Ginn & Reed had INCREDIBLE potential in the future. John Beck already seems to have a connection with those guys, and Hagen also for that matter.

Once again I applaud Cam/Ran for what IN TIME will be another good move. We got Samson with the extra 2nd rounder for Welker: INSTANT STARTER, and will anchor or O-Line for 10 years. Next year, maybe an heir to JT, Zach, or a shut down corner!

And yes, I too feel this tilts the hand. Beck's time is coming soon.

Hang in there, Dolphans. These guys are doing this right. Our time will come & when it does it will last more than a year!

Darius...
Now that is surprising. There isn't a lot of sense in it, except of course, if they are going to play jason allen and ride him for the rest of the season. If that's the case, then it is a reasonable move. Let's find out if Allen can do anything.
