http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AjfcT8Rfcdg_fVJtKn6jDBBDubYF?slug=jc-taylorwinning051208&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

Here is an excerpt:

"LOS ANGELES – Jason Taylor has never been this close to a championship in his professional career. This may be dancing, not football, but winning is winning.

That helps explain the hardened, competitive smile of satisfaction that crossed his face approximately an hour after the latest episode of ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars.” He was changing quickly in his makeup trailer as he bantered with wife Katina, agent Gary Wichard and some friends from Florida who came to town for the show.

Katina then interjected about how much Taylor was really starting to enjoy it, getting into the artistry of the dancing and the action. That’s when someone else blurted, “Really, you love to win.”

“No question,” Taylor said, emphatically, that smile punctuating the moment as he hustled to get ready for a post-show party. Taylor, who is shooting to stardom at a rapid rate even by Hollywood standards, can’t get enough of the success he has had over the past two months of dancing. Success that has eluded him as one of the top defensive ends in the NFL for the past 11 years while playing nobly for a Miami Dolphins franchise that has drifted more like a lost whale the past six years."

Not such a big deal. Just feeding speculation that JT will fly the NFL coop for Hollywood.

It could happen, I suppose....

What do you think?

Fun with Jayson Foster stats

I really like everything I read and hear about this kid.

He is going to make his living in the NFL with his hands and his legs, but it is fun to look at his college QB stats (as well as watch his highlight reels).

He played WR as a freshman, catching 10-217 2 TDs, but also rushed for 164 yards on 26 carries & 4 TD including an 80-yarder. He threw one pass all year, a 54 yard TD.

He went back to WR as a Junior, catching 33-368 3 TD (including an 85 yard TD) and rushed for 364 yards on 43 carries.

He played QB as a Senior, but still managed to catch 6-65 with no TDs.

Even as a receiver, he had more rushes than receptions. Moral of the story: try to get the ball into Foster’s hands any way possible.

Rushing Stats to whet your appetite for what he can do with the ball in his hands:

First three games of 2007: 11-231 and 3 TD (including a 74 yarder), 28-253 6 TDs (yes that’s right, 6 TD including a 55 yarder), 26-210 3 TDs (including a 60 yarder). The second game corresponds to his worst passing stats 6-15 2 Ints, 0 TDs. If you are going to run for 253 and 6 TDs, you might as well just tuck and run.

After the first three games, there was a stretch of 3 games that were merely average:

Against Western Carolina, South Dakota State, and Elon College: 17-96 1 TD, 20-92 1 TD, 30-74 1 TD;

Observation: he definitely demonstrates some toughness running the ball, carrying 30 times in a game. It also looks like he is starting to develop as a Quarterback (remember he is switched back from WR)

Passing stats in those same three games: 17-20 120 1 Int, 0 TD, 10-10 147 1 TD, 23-31 225 1 TD 1 Int

He throws 3 TD and no interceptions in the remaining 6 games of the year.

Against a bad (2-9) Division I Colorado State team, he rushes for 27-295 3 TDs, so he can do it against the big boys albeit the mediocre ones.

One last interesting note: He rushed for 20-175 1 TD and threw 3-3 14 no TD in leading Georgia Southern to a 38-35 victory over Appalachian State, so although I hear that he doesn’t talk trash, he could tease Jake Long and Chad Henne that in 2007 he did what they couldn’t do.

IF I were Sparano, I would write beaucoup trick plays for Foster, practice them diligently (beware those pesky Patriot camcorders), and after intentionally making Foster a non-factor in the first two games, unleash Foster on the Patriots and go for broke in order to pull an upset in Foxboro in the third week. He just might be the difference maker against an aging defense.

I know I'm probably biased, but I was reading this article in the USA Today by Skip Wood where he goes over Miami's entire depth chart, and somehow (with the exception of the secondary), it didn’t sound all that bad. Do you agree?

Quarterback: With the Trent Green experiment having gone terribly awry — as the Daunte Culpepper tango did a year earlier — the Dolphins are looking at a three-way competition for the starting job in what should be the primary focus in camp. Look for veteran Josh McCown to have an early edge, followed by second-year man John Beck and the possible long-term answer, rookie Chad Henne from Michigan.

Running back: They are coming off injuries, but Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are expected to be at or at least near full strength come camp. Brown is entering his fourth season and was having a breakout 2007 before tearing a knee ligament. Williams — despite his many off-field foibles — remains a credible threat.

Wide receiver: Chris Chambers was shipped to San Diego during the 2007 season, so the heavy lifting for 2008 probably will fall to Ted Ginn Jr. and Ernest Wilford, who arrived as a free agent from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Finding depth will be pivotal.

Tight end: David Martin was unimpressive last season, though he was hampered by spotty quarterback play. Anthony Fasano arrived from the Dallas Cowboys in a trade and should get a chance to start.

Offensive line: This unit is as important as anything to new football CEO Bill Parcells, and the Dolphins look as though they'll make him happy. Jake Long was the first pick in the draft, and he'll play left tackle, freeing Vernon Carey to slide to right tackle. Samson Satele was the first Miami rookie to start 16 games at center a year ago. Free agent Justin Smiley will start at one guard spot.

Defensive line: Jason Taylor remains one of the game's premier pass rushers, but whether he remains a Dolphin is uncertain. He'll also probably be a linebacker in Parcells' 3-4 look. Newcomer Jason Ferguson is the likely nose tackle. Rookie end Phillip Merling was a nice draft pick, and Vonnie Holliday's best days probably are behind him. End Matt Roth should start and provide energy.

Linebacker: It's hard to believe Zach Thomas is gone, but gone he is. Joey Porter returns, and he had a strong second half of the season after being hobbled by an injury. Also back is Channing Crowder, and new blood has arrived in the form of Akin Ayodele and Reggie Torbor.

Secondary: Will Allen is set at one corner; he's the only guy in the defensive backfield who started all 16 games a year ago. Improvement is expected from Travis Daniels. There's a bit of a logjam at safety, with Yeremiah Bell the leader. Jason Allen, a 2006 first-rounder, needs to start making an impact.

Special teams: Everything is pretty much set. Reliable kicker Jay Feely returns, as does punter Brandon Fields. Ginn was solid as a returner last season but didn't strike fear into opponents — a — la the Chicago Bears' Devin Hester. Look for the Dolphins to put an increased emphasis on across-the-board special-teams play.

Coaching staff: In short, an overhaul. Gone is Cam Cameron, replaced by Tony Sparano, who's in his first major head coaching position. He spent the last five years with the Dallas Cowboys, primarily overseeing the O-line. Well-traveled Dan Henning is the new offensive coordinator, and Paul Pasqualoni takes over the defense.

Outlook: Let's see. New football czar, new general manager, new coach and new coordinators. A 1-15 record last season. All that talk about how, in today's NFL, franchises can go from awful to solid in the span of one season? Not here. Not now. Things probably will get considerably better, but only after a year or two.

For anyone in the know knows that it was Marlin Briscoe, not Paul Warfield, who was the leading reciever for the unbeaten 1972 Dolphins. Sure you knew that?. Did you also know that Marlin holds a QB record with the Denver Broncos too? Yes he was the first MA Black Quarterback. Why isn't "The Magician" talked about the same way some other's are such as Doug Williams or Warren Moon? Who knows, but this movie is going to change that, I hope. Take a look because it's a great and true story.

2008 Schedule Analysis:

The Trifecta has made it a point in acquisitions to stregthen the run defense and the offensive line (and running backs).

Running the Ball and Stopping the Run is a great strategy for any team in any year, but it is particularly effective against teams with weak QB play and/or inconsistent WR talent.

IF the Dolphins can consistently run the ball and stop the run, they can force the other team to have to rely on a shaky QB or a shaky passing attack.

Looking at our 2008 schedule:

San Francisco, Oakland, Baltimore, Kansas City, New York Jets (2), St Louis, Houston, Arizona:

(Lots of shaky QB's here, especially if Bulger, Shaub, and Leinhart are hurt AGAIN by then)

I see us maybe going 7-2 here.

Buffalo (2), Seattle, Denver, San Diego, New England (2):

Hopefully improved special teams can give us an edge we will desperately need.

I see maybe 2 wins here. 2-5

Lo and behold: 9-7 IF we improve enough to run effectively and stop the run.

How do you think we will do in 2008?

Check out this little game .

I'm usually not one for mmorpgs, especially ones that don't active involve any action, but this is one of those interesting little things that take about 5-7 minutes a day and can be quite entertaining.

You create your own players and set their skills and train them, then sign on with teams that compete against eachother.

It's all free, so there's no worries there. The only thing that'll cost you is if you want to buy and build your own team, but all of the teams for this season are already bought anyways.

I've already created 2 players, an OT named Wayne Moore and a DE named Bill Stanfill (those names sound familiar to anyone? :P) And I'm starting to enjoy it.

Anyways, check it out. It's a nice little time waster while most of us wait for our real time waster - fantasy football - to get started again.

This just put up on Rotoworld...

Contrary to a February 2 report in the Boston Herald, former Patriots videotape assistant Matt Walsh does not have film of the Rams' Super Bowl XXXVI walkthrough.

Walsh gave the NFL eight videos of opponents' coaches from 2000-2002. The tapes show the Patriots stealing offensive and defensive signals in regular-season games against the Dolphins, Bills, Browns, and Chargers, and the Steelers in the 2002 AFC Championship. Walsh's attorney says his client never claimed to have a tape of the Rams' walkthrough and was not the "unnamed source" in the Herald's story. The NFL has not yet commented.
Source: New York Times

Here's hoping the NFL punishes them again.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is looking for an elite receiver to team with Terrell Owens.

Would you trade Ted Ginn Jr., Jason Taylor, and Andre Goodman

to the Cowboys for

Terry Glenn, Isaiah Stanback (6-2 208 WR), Miles Austin (6-3 216 WR), Marc Colombo (6-8 325 RT), Greg Ellis (OLB), and Anthony Henry (CB 6-1 208)???

I believe that there is a considerable cap hit for trading Teddy Ginn, but there is some room under the cap for Miami if this is worth it.

At first, I think most would say,

"why trade away a young ultra fast elite receiver for old veterans from the Cowboys?",

but take a closer look and keep this in mind

RUN OFFENSE - RUN DEFENSE

The trade would give the Dolphins this OL:

LT Long, LG Smiley, C Satele, RG Carey (moved inside to guard), RT Colombo

Shawn Murphy has potential, but may need time to develop. This upgraded line on paper is already playoff caliber. Carey could develop into a Leonard Davis type mauler on the inside. Sparano is very familiar with this concept.

Greg Ellis is not the dynamic pass rusher that Taylor is, but he is a better run defender and a better fit than JT for the Parcells/Pasqualoni Hold Your Ground Read-React 3-4 defense.

Anthony Henry and Will Allen would give the team a tandem of solid run defending corners and buy time to develop any drafted or developmental CB's.

Terry Glenn is coming off a serious injury and has an unknown future, but he is a veteran receiver that Parcells trusts (and likes alot). He alone is not worth a Ted Ginn trade, but Stanback is an Ireland 4th round project (QB turned WR) who is big, fast, elusive, and flashes a good set of hands. He is also a kick returner with size, which Parcells prefers. Miles Austin would just be a special teams throw-in who has size and speed (along with unproven hands) and no character concerns like Kircus.

In Summary, lose a dynamic elite (but skinny) WR/PR and an underweight pass rusher extraordinaire and a backup veteran corner and gain a playoff caliber O-Line, a very physical run stuffing tandem of corners, and BIGGER Wide Receivers (who are not as fast as Ginn, but maybe more elusive/polished). I think Jerry Jones is desperate enough to make this trade to get a player like Ginn. They question is, would we be giving up too much?

Would you do this deal? Would Parcells?

Dolphins QB Chad Henne, the 57th overall pick, admitted yesterday that he took pain-killing injections last season for a separated right shoulder. Probably no big deal, but it's funny how extra details about college injuries come out *after* the draft. Henne's completion % dropped from 61.8% in 2006 to 58.2% in 2007. His yards-per-attempt also dropped from 7.6 to 7.0.

How long do these things take to heal?

Post-Draft Power Rankings - Peter King Article

So Peter King of si, wrote up an article following the draft. The article basically is a preseason power ranking of all the NFL teams. He lists the dolphins at #27 and writes this about the team:

27. Miami. I don't know who's playing quarterback, who's catching the ball or if Jason Taylor will ever speak to the great and powerful Bill "Oz'' Parcells. But you ask the people who know Parcells the best, and they'll tell you they like the way he's shaking up the bottom of the roster, and he's on his way to building a team that will give the Patriots a game soon. To do that in 2009 or '10, the Dolphins have to discover if they've got their quarterback of the future on the roster now. Best chance to be The Man, of course, is second-round pick Chad Henne.

**** ***** *****

You can see the full article and rankings here:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/peter_king/05/02/rankings/index.html

What do you guys think of the ranking? It places us as more or less better than 5 teams though worse than 26.

Thank God for Ronnie Brown over Cedric Benson.....I found this classic mugshot of him, but if you look at the police checklist.....well, take a look for yourself...

Ronnie has not been the player we thought he was just yet, but at least he's not this douche bag. That said, I think he'll be one of the hottest second half of the year players. Barring injury, the line is shaping up and he should be starting to feel 100% later in the year. Let's just hope he doesn't go drunk boating!

It's gonna rumble through the pre-season until we are all biting at the bit to see what's gonna happen as these two monsters face off. Unless the QB debate hits full speed. Who ever it is, he's gonna have a lucky start behind #79.

Anyway come September someone is gonna make someone else look like a steroid weight room freak of a reach pick.

Siting: Jason Taylor & Vonnie Holliday

Well, sort of sited.

Sparano, when talking about advantages Jake Long might have, mentioned that Jason Taylor and Vonnie Holliday might be Long’s best assets. He said that he told Jake that even before the contract was finalized. Jake, apparently was taken aback.

The bottom line: Sparano believes both of the Phins star pass rushers are good teachers and will be able to teach and assist Long in developing and matching the speed of the pro game.

So for now… It seems… Tentatively that… Taylor is in the plans. Halleluiah (said quietly and fearfully). We may yet have a pass rush.

Holliday too, who had a year diminished by injuries and a thin supporting cast, is also garnering the respect he deserves. Sparano, when interviewed at the owner’s meetings, almost forgot to mention Vonnie’s name as a member of the current starting line.

Those folks who worry too much about JT and BP would do well to remember that potentially the most important rookie this year is Tony S.

"No bones about it."

Drafttek.com has an analysis of all the AFC teams based on if the player chosen was considered a value or a reach.

Catch it here: http://www.drafttek.com/2008ValueAFC.html

Viewed at from this angle- they rated the Dolphins as 2nd best in the AFC behind Kansas City- which is pretty good considering the # of picks tKC had, and considering you can't really get a "value pick' at #1 overall. Our biggest steal was considered Merling at #32.

One surprising note- the biggest "reachers" were the Patsies. End of a Dynasty? More likely their scouting department is just better than a website's could ever hope to be. . .but it never hurts to dream.
