EJ Manuel injury leads to Thad Lewis start against Miami; Dolphins vs Bills Week 16 injury report

Phil Sears-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Dolphins hit the road for the final time in the 2013 regular season, this time heading north to face the Buffalo Bills. Both teams issued their first injury reports of the week last night.

The Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills will complete the second leg of their home-and-home series this weekend when they face off in upstate New York.  Both teams issued their initial injury reports of the week last night, with updates coming later today and tomorrow.

The Dolphins had cornerback Brent Grimes and running back Daniel Thomas sit out Wednesday's workout.  Grimes injured his groin against the New England Patriots this past weekend, while Thomas had to leave Sunday's 24-20 win with an ankle injury.

Miami had limited participation in the workout from cornerback Nolan Carroll and defensive tackle Paul Soliai, both of whom joined Grimes and Thomas as players to leave the Patriots game early.  Carroll injured his knee, while Soliai had to leave with an ankle injury.  Safety Chris Clemons (knee/hamstring) and cornerback Jamar Taylor (hamstring) were also limited.

Safety Reshad Jones and defensive end Olivier Vernon were also listed on the report, with a groin injury and an ankle problem respectively, though both were full participants in practice.

For the Bills, running back Fred Jackson (ribs), wide receiver Stevie Johnson (non-injury), defensive tackle Kyle Williams (Achilles), and safety Aaron Williams (ribs) were all non-participants in Wednesday's practice.  Johnson is with his family right now as they mourn the loss of his mother, who unexpectedly passed away last Saturday, with question marks about when he will return to the team and if he will be available for this weekend's game.

The report listed cornerback Brandon Smith (ankle), defensive tackle Marcell Dareus (ankle), and quarterback E.J. Manuel (knee) as limited in practice.  However, after the workout, Bills coach Doug Marrone announced that Thad Lewis, and not Manuel, will be starting at quarterback.  Manuel has a knee sprain and the swelling has not subsided, leading to the decision to start Lewis.

Lewis has started three games this year for Buffalo, compiling a 1-2 record.  That lone win came against the Dolphins in Week 7.

The Bills return to the practice field today, while the Dolphins have the day off.
