Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph has his first interview for a 2017 head coaching position today when he meets with the Denver Broncos. That is not his only scheduled meeting, however. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Joseph is now scheduled to meet with the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday.
Joseph is considered one of the favorites for the Broncos’ position, so the scheduled meeting with the Broncos may be cancelled if Denver locks up Joseph today.
The Dolphins hired Joseph as the defensive coordinator last year, bringing him from the Cincinnati Bengals where he had been serving as the team’s defensive backs coach. His one season with the Dolphins was not as successful as Joseph would have liked, with the defense struggling to replace several key injuries including both starting safeties and a starting outside linebacker finishing the year on injured reserve as well as two starting cornerbacks, both other starting linebackers, and a starting defensive tackle missing games due to various issues. Joseph did turn the Dolphins into a more attacking style of defense, which was one of his stated goals when he arrived as head coach Adam Gase’s defensive coordinator.
Joseph was considered one of the finalists for the Broncos’ head coaching position two years ago, but the team selected Gary Kubiak instead. Kubiak retired this year due to health injuries, and Joseph’s name immediately moved to the top of the list as a possible replacement.
