More Than Business

I began supporting the Dolphins a little over 30 years ago. In England, with a little help, I followed everything as closely as I could. It's become easier now...

The Dolphins were an obvious choice: Superbowl, Marino, colours you don't see in an English football match, the man that was moving in with my mother was from Key West...

So the Dolphins it was then and that's why now, every game matters so much, every move, every signing counts so much to me.

But why?

Just because I picked a team? No. Because of watching Marino throw to Duper, watching Zack Thomas, and Jason Taylor, and loving their commitment. Surtain and Madison, and strangely, Rob Konrad.

So this brings me to my title. When we consider what to do with a player like Cameron Wake, I can't think of anything other than keeping him as long as he will be here. It may not be the best business, maybe we could get a draft pick, increase our cap room.

But I want the Dolphins to win because I care about them, because of a Cameron Wake. I want them to win because of him, and for him. There's room for some sentiment in supporting a team, and if it makes me care, it will make other supporters care, and players, and ultimately I think some sentiment and loyalty might be the best business a team can do.
