Could Miami Target Bills LT Cordy Glenn In Free Agency ?

A seismic shifting of the tectonic plates in the history of the Miami Dolphins occurred in the second round of the 2012 NFL draft, when the Buffalo Bills selected University of Georgia's Cordy Glenn, leaving the Dolphins to select walking time bomb Jonathan Martin, and all the misery he would eventually visit upon the team.

Six weeks from now, having played out his four year rookie contract, Glenn becomes a free agent. Even if the Bills, as expected, opt to let Mario Williams go, they are still expected to have cap issues, and the word out of Buffalo is that they're expected to go all in on retooling their defense after an off year in 2015, by Rex Ryan's standards.

Hey, turnabout is fair play, right ? The Bills plucked TE Charles Clay from the Dolphins a year ago, and Miami needs a couple of new linemen. They also absolutely cannot afford to take an offensive lineman with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, so, depending on what Glenn's asking price is, could the Dolphins be interested ? Before we decide he'll be too expensive, keep in mind that a whole contingent of aging, expensive veterans players on Miami's roster figure to be shown the door this offseason.

If the Dolphins are able to pull it off, signing Glenn would accomplish three very important goals:

-- improve the offensive line, as well allow for more flexibility; Glenn has been a starter at left tackle for Buffalo the past several seasons, but Miami could experiment with Glenn at right tackle, or plug him in at LT during training camp, shifting current Dolphins left tackle Branden Albert inside to guard, to get the five best linemen on the field.

-- such a move would also allow Miami to focus on the defense in the draft, something they haven't done in many years, outside of The Great Lost Draft of 2013, when they selected Dion Jordan, Jamar Taylor and Will Davis in the first three rounds.

-- finally, signing Glenn away from Buffalo would weaken the Bills' roster, and make no mistake -- Buffalo, at this point in time, represents a much greater roadblock, longer term, to Miami winning the AFC East division than do the Patriots. Yes, New England may be the better overall team right now, and could well advance to the Super Bowl again this year, but we've been able to split the season series against the Patriots the past three years, while the Bills have clobbered our team with regularity, out physicaling us at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

In sum, we're by no means suggesting that signing Glenn would necessarily be a slam dunk, only that it's worth considering.
