Our Phinsider Community Mock Draft does not take into account trades, but as we head into the third overall selection from the San Diego Chargers, the team's phone should probably be ringing off the hook right now. When the Cleveland Browns did not select a quarterback with the second pick, it opened up all kinds of possibilities for the Draft. The Dallas Cowboys with the fifth pick could have a quarterback on their radar, which could tempt a team like the San Francisco 49ers or Los Angeles Rams to try to make the move up to the third position.
Since we are not making trades, Blaze453, who is representing the Chargers, made a pick, and, honestly, the Chargers could throw the second curveball of our draft. San Diego has multiple needs heading into the selection process, and they could go off script to make sure they land a top talent at any of those positions. Blaze453 does fill a needs for the Chargers, and does it with a fairly chalk pick.
With the third overall pick in the Phinsider Community Mock Draft, Blaze453 selects for the San Diego Chargers Jalen Ramsey, defensive back, Florida State.
The Chargers were hoping Left Tackle Laremy Tunsil might make it to pick 3 to help stabilize their poor offensive line play. But the Chargers are thrilled that Jalen Ramsey, who just might be the top prospect in the entire draft, is here to make the third overall pick in this tear's draft. Some have looked at Jalen as CB prospect because of his decent coverage ability and very good play making skills but S.D. believes he is a future multiple all-pro safety. He is a superb "last line of defense" that makes huge plays, is a willing tackler and can cover slot receivers and TEs with little problem.
With Eric Weddle moving on to greener pastures there is a huge hole in San Diego's back end and Ramsey will fill that hole with a play making ability that hasn't been seen in the draft since Eric Berry of the KC Chiefs and the Seahawk's Earl Thomas. Ramsey will find a welcoming home in the back end of the Charger's secondary for years to come.
Analysis
I think Blaze453 is exactly correct: the Chargers would love to see Tunsil fall, but that is not likely, so their "backup" plan is to "settle" for Ramsey. He is obviously an outstanding pick, and he is one that does immediately give them a replacement for Weddle. The question is, do the Chargers get pigeon-holed into just wanting to replace Weddle, or do they look around at some other options?
