Welcome to the 2014 NFL season! We may still be a little over a month away from the first meaningful game of the year, but that does not mean today's first practice of the Miami Dolphins training camp is not the first official day of the year. After months of offseason news stories, discussion topics, quick looks at Organized Team Activities, and everything else that comes between the end of one season and the start of the next, today we officially have football things to discuss.
Today's practice is also the first of the year that is open to the public. If you are reading this, you probably aren't at practice, but that doesn't mean you don't have a chance to go to the next one. You can check out the link to the right (or below on a mobile device) to get all the information you need to attend camp this year.
Be sure to also check out our Training Camp StoryStream, pinned into the first position under the cover on the main page of the site. We will collect all of our training camp stories in that one place, so you can always catch up to anything you missed. You can also subscribe to the StoryStream, which will then make sure you get notified of all of the stories as they post on your Facebook wall.
Below, we will run a collection of tweets from the various beat writers covering camp this morning. Feel free to discuss any observations you make, either by attending camp or from what you are reading, in the comments at the bottom of the page.
Practice starts at 8am ET this morning. We will update the tweets as soon thereafter as we can.
It is 8am in the morning and already damn hot. Welcome to football season. pic.twitter.com/YFk9poAVRy

Shelley Smith at center, Colledge at LG, Dallas Thomas at RG to open camp
— Andrew Abramson (@AbramsonPBP) July 25, 2014
Colledge experience and familiarity with Philbin makes it logical he will be a starter. Can Billy Turner challenge Dallas Thomas?
— Andrew Abramson (@AbramsonPBP) July 25, 2014
Dolphins have usual OTs - LT Branden Albert, RT Ja'Wuan James.
— Chris Perkins (@chrisperk) July 25, 2014
I found it interesting that Michael Egnew and not Dion Sims is the 2nd team tight end. That's new.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
Daniel Thomas began training camp as the second team tailback. No surprise. He looks like Tarzan, needs to finally play like Tarzan.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
Sam Brenner also taking snaps at center. Mike Pouncey is out, remember.
— Hal Habib (@gunnerhal) July 25, 2014

Earl Mitchell continues to work as the DT paired with Randy Starks as the starter. Jared Odrick is healthy. His role will be interesting.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
Crowd at about 1,000 on so for today's first practice. Place is slightly less than half full.

— Chris Perkins (@chrisperk) July 25, 2014
The Dolphins have Marcus Thigpen listed as a tailback and receiver. He's been back & forth with those units for 3 years now. Nothing new.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
What Marcus Thigpen really is: a return specialist, a scatback tailback, and a slot receiver. Same roles in college, CFL & NFL.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
Finnegan, Mitchell work with the first team defense in first 11-on-11.
— Adam Beasley (@AdamHBeasley) July 25, 2014
The Dolphins are doing 11 on 11s right in front of the fans.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
First play of team drills today? A fumbled center snap in exchange between Ryan Tannehill and Shelley Smith.
— Armando Salguero (@ArmandoSalguero) July 25, 2014
TO on first snap. Fumbled snap on 2nd play. Offense a bit shaky to start.
— Chris Perkins (@chrisperk) July 25, 2014
Tannehill just delivered a 1st down strike to Armon Binns.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
Second play is a quick bubble screen to Brandon Gibson, who is practicing after missing most of last season with a torn patellar.
— Armando Salguero (@ArmandoSalguero) July 25, 2014
Nice run by Daniel Thomas. Running with power, but it is day one.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
Little rough so far. Egnew drop.
— Adam Beasley (@AdamHBeasley) July 25, 2014
DE Dion Jordan working today. He'll miss first four regular-season games for violating NFL rules on banned substances, remember.

— Tom Garfinkel (@TomGarfinkel) July 25, 2014
Michael Wallace's end around would have been blown up for a loss by Louis Delmas. He's very aggressive.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
Tannehill rolling out of the pocket early in practice. Maybe this is the year they'll really give him the green light.
— Andrew Abramson (@AbramsonPBP) July 25, 2014
Lamar Miller with a nice inside run.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
Time for specials teams work, which is the best way to make a 53 man roster. Jason Trusnik has made a 9 year career. pic.twitter.com/5WTgVToL6X
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
Taylor and Davis second-team corners. Dion Jordan second-team right defense end.
— Adam Beasley (@AdamHBeasley) July 25, 2014
Marcus Thigpen just destroyed Kyle Miller on a kickoff return. Totally lost him.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
If you want to watch a special team drill and see how it is SUPPOSED to be done then watch Jason Trusnik.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
Check out #Dolphins CB Brent Grimes' flashy cleats. #Nice pic.twitter.com/05UEgTZPLI
— James Walker (@JamesWalkerNFL) July 25, 2014
Cortland Finnegan and Brent Grimes are the starting cornerbacks. No surprise.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
Watching Koa Misi be ultra aggressive on his run fits. This might benefit the linebacker unit, but I'm concerned about coverage.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
AJ Francis and Anthony Johnson are the second team DTs. They are the guys to beat out for the 53. Like both a lot. Like Isaako Aaitui too.

Day one of training camp is underway! #StrongerTogether pic.twitter.com/fLKxsq6fYD
— Miami Dolphins (@MiamiDolphins) July 25, 2014
I'm taking a close look at rookie MLB Jordie Tripp this camp. I saw a few flashes in OTAs. But I want to see it in pads. #Dolphins
— James Walker (@JamesWalkerNFL) July 25, 2014
Ahhh, the option keeper by Ryan Tannehill. You'll see more of that this year.
— Armando Salguero (@ArmandoSalguero) July 25, 2014
Dallas Thomas remains one of the biggest gainers this offseason. Still working at right guard ahead of third-round pick Billy Turner.
— Adam Beasley (@AdamHBeasley) July 25, 2014
Ellerbe is the odd man out when the Dolphins to go their sub package. Jimmy Wilson still the nickel.
— Adam Beasley (@AdamHBeasley) July 25, 2014
DE Dion Jordan on field vs. run on 2nd down play. That'll be good needs in October when he's able to play.
— Chris Perkins (@chrisperk) July 25, 2014
Olivier Vernon with a sack of Tannehill during 11-on-11s, coming from LDE. Then moved to RDE next snap.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
Dion Jordan sure looks big. HUGE!
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
Last year Dion Jordan couldn't defend the run because of his shoulder injury. This year he has no excuse. He's massive!
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
Jason Trusnik is the second team inside linebacker. Jelani Jenkins is the second team weakside linebacker.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
Bad snap by backup C Sam Brenner. Rolled to the QB.
— Armando Salguero (@ArmandoSalguero) July 25, 2014
Deep from Tannehill to Wallace? Underthrown. Broken up by Will Davis, who was a step behind Wallace.
— Adam Beasley (@AdamHBeasley) July 25, 2014
Tannehill's deep pass to Mike Wallace is broken up by Will Davis. No chance on the floater.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
Moment fans waited for: Mike Wallace goes deep on right sideline, Ryan Tannehill flings it ... and Will Davis breaks it up.
— Hal Habib (@gunnerhal) July 25, 2014
Tannehill underthrows to Wallace on deep pass. Will Davis breaks up pass. Crowd goes "ooohhh" then "ah"
— Andrew Abramson (@AbramsonPBP) July 25, 2014
Good play by CB Will Davis to recover. But Ryan Tannehill didn't put enough on the deep ball. #Dolphins
— James Walker (@JamesWalkerNFL) July 25, 2014
The weather here is picking up in Davie and it's not even 10am. #DolphinsTrainingCamp
— James Walker (@JamesWalkerNFL) July 25, 2014
Offense looks a little rusty, not surprisingly. A couple of bad snaps, false starts.
— Andrew Abramson (@AbramsonPBP) July 25, 2014
Dion Jordan looks so much bigger these days. pic.twitter.com/wHW4PkIL6z
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
Offense has looked a bit shaky. Penalties. Incomplete passes. But defense has been sharp.
— Chris Perkins (@chrisperk) July 25, 2014
Mike Pouncey and Knowshon Moreno are doing their rehab assignment. Pouncey moves very gingerly.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
Special teams is one of the most boring aspects of practice, BUT it is also one of the most important cause it can turn the tide of a game.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014
For what it's worth, #Dolphins K Caleb Sturgis just nailed a pair of 33-yard field goals.
— James Walker (@JamesWalkerNFL) July 25, 2014
#Dolphins going inside bubble for 5-min cool down session. That's new this year.

— Chris Perkins (@chrisperk) July 25, 2014
Just watched Randy Starks run around Dallas Thomas with ease during 1 on 1. That's not unusual, but not good.
— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) July 25, 2014

— James Walker (@JamesWalkerNFL) July 25, 2014
Cameron Wake slaps Ja'Wuan James hands away and blows past rookie in one on one. Expected at this point.
— Armando Salguero (@ArmandoSalguero) July 25, 2014
Catch by Egnew in the flat.
— Armando Salguero (@ArmandoSalguero) July 25, 2014
Dion Jordan doing Ok in 1-on-1 drills. LT Nate Garner just did well vs. Jordan, however.
— Chris Perkins (@chrisperk) July 25, 2014
OL did ok in 1-on-1 drills vs. DL. That's promising. But nothing means much til they put on pads.
— Chris Perkins (@chrisperk) July 25, 2014
