Over the years I have watched multiple players come and go for the Dolphins. Some should have stayed a while longer, though some we can scratch our heads and wonder how they made the roster in the first place. All we know is that for years, even with players such as Karlos Dansby, Kevin Burnette, Brandon Marshall, Jake Long, Mike Wallace, Reggie Bush, Ritchie Incognito, Tyson Clabo, Mike Pouncey, the list goes on and on, the same thing held true according to experts, this team lacked leadership. It lacked that one Ray Lewis type that could command the huddle during games, be a centering force in both practices and the locker room, and be that guy the other players gravitated to.
But DF4L, these players led the team in their respective categories? Yes, this is true, but leading in stats does not make a leader. It makes a good player that can play his position the right way, but that in no way determines his ability to be a leader. In truth, the last player that exhibited leadership qualities was Chad Pennington, a quick signing after a division rival cut him. Is it any wonder that the last time we sniffed the playoffs was when he was at the helm, and the Patriots lost Tom Brady for a season?
Tom was their leader, Chad was ours. Players gravitated to both these guys, and it showed up on the field.
People that look at this draft will see that we reached for a RT, but what they won't see is that we took a guy that was tough as nails and did what he had to do and was asked of him without complaint. He took the less glorified spot RT, and made it his. Playing in 49 games all at a position that has become undervalued. People clamored for ASJ, and we still got another Tight End, not many outside of the Georgia locker room may have heard of, but the ones in that locker room will say just had this gravitational force that drew players in, and made them want to work harder. LSU had 2 wide receivers drafted. We picked up one of them. The other had the stats, but ours once again had that one comment made about the way he drew other players in, and took charge. Our other offensive lineman drafted? Also a leader. 2nd WR was a head scratcher, but the experts all agree he was an under the radar prospect that also exhibited leadership skills.
In FA, we signed Albert, Moreno, Delmas, Finnegan. All high character guys off the field, with a penchant for nastiness on it.
People clamored when we let Dansby and Burnette go, as well as Marshall the year before, saying we should have never let them go. Because they were good players that led the team in stats if nothing else. Well it is my humble opinion that we are better off without them, because in that nothing else, we lacked direction and still managed to miss the playoffs.
